Well, I tried to replicate the antenna issue with various coworker's phones, and not a single one dropped bars or data rate. Yet, my iPhone 4 dropped data to a complete standstill. Apple must be standing at the edge of an elevator when testing these other phones. What a complete fable.

You should know very well that unless you give us data about which phones, which networks, where the closest towers were for each carrier are, how much signal strength there was for each, you ain't said nothing.

Hahaha. I love it. Absolutely love it!

I wonder if Consumer Reports will now say they cannot recommend every other phone. This is all throwing facts in CR's face. (it was after all their report that pushed the truck over the cliff)

I hope these videos keep coming. It isn't hurting them, because last I checked the site they were 3 weeks behind in shipping. $$$$$$$$$!!

Blonde Buddhist

Funny thing is, Consumer reports did not recommend any other phones. It was only interesting that iPhone 4 was the highest rated smart phone and was not recommended. They did not formally non-recommend it, they simply did not tag it as recommended.

I don't know... those were obviously and intentionally toungue-in-cheek.

This seems somewhat venomous.
It is the last part of a spectacularly successful PR plan well explained here.
1. Don't engage with the wailing Fandroids (you just become part of the cacophony);
2. Don't say anything until you have something to say (it gives others the chance to trip themselves up);
3. When you have something to say, control the room and shamelessly bait the opposition (because the fight is already dirty and nice guys don't win);

And when they bite, send a message: "What to fight dirty? OK, game time."

  • So Nokia isn't mentioned, but comments anyway - suddenly Nokia is mentioned.
  • Droid X is left out, but Motorola's founder can't keep quiet. Bang.

The message is simple: "Keep off the grass".

And here is why. This is the big boys playground, not the Mock UN.

Apple has truly become the most evil of American technology companies. Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Intel, they are all far more sympathetic. Maybe it's time to realise that a petulant (but productive) narcissist as your CEO has its shortcomings?

I think its obvious that out of Jobs and his nemesis Bill Gates, its the latter who will be remembered as the greater man, the one who devoted his life to charity rather than insulting reports, consumers and competitors.

Frankly, at the end of the day I don't really care. I think Apple's handling of this situation is rotten. I also know BS when I see it.

iPhone->iPhone 3G ->iPhone 3Gs -> Droid X

Why? because I expressed myself and my displeasure with Apple the best way I knew how.

With my wallet.

I know it's a bit out of context but i just checked about the Droid X for more info (i must be living in a cave since i didnt heard about this phone before...) on the website : http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/U...ile-Phones/ci.Motorola-DROID-X-US-EN.vertical

It's me or the guy talking in the video of the features section is the guy from "sarcastic gamer" who made a parody on youtube for the Wii fit, the Microsoft surface and the Microsoft vision of future ...

We can't fix it so we'll attack our competitors.

Apple continues their pettiness--I think maybe it's time for Jobs to leave.

Apple is doing this because of the huge threat of Android.

Android is eating Apple's lunch in the smart phone market and soon the tablet market.

When you are scared and desperate you take desperate measures--just what this is.

Ahhh, the phantom, soon to be released iPad killer running Droid software. And you know this how? Show me the goods?

Android eating iPhone's lunch? It has the advantage of being available on virtually every carrier while the iPhone is limited to ATT (for the moment).
Appke can't make them fast enough and, when it's on more than one provider, it will continue to kick butt!

Appkemis desperate and Jobs should resign even though he consistently is named the best tech CEO in business and Apple has record profits and top cash reserves.

Don't ket the facts get in the way of your argument.

Ugh apple really are scraping the bottom of the barrel. Who on earth at apple PR thought this was a good idea . When you've got to dedicate time and money to advertise that other phones are just as poor* as your "brilliant engineering" that "changes everything again" you've got substantial problems.

This.

Apple are being pathetic.

Guess what Steve... I just ordered a Droid X.

Fill in the blank. Here let me get you started with an example "sell my Mac and buy a Windoze machine rather" ;)

I'd rather buy a piece of poop for $1 less than the price of a Droid than buy a Droid. At least the poop helps my garden.

Yeah, but Apple makes incredible products, not average crap. So we hate them for any flaws and do anything possible to rip them down... right?

Good will come of this, though. Not for the present iPhone owners, but in abut 6 months there will be an engineered solution.

I guess you don't own a droid x. :p

Imagine me, doing my best to manufacture the bars dropping for the first week, solid. Couldn't do it, until I went to the locker room in the Y, where the signal is very week. OH, I said, that's what they're talking about. So I did another experiment: I made a call from this locker room. Went right through. Good voice quality. Less than one bar of signal, switched over to the slow protocol.

That sums it up.

When Google posts ads such as this:

'Hold the phone any way you like.'

It's quite sensible to respond.

It was Motorola, but you were close enough and it is perfect for this particular video. Motorola ran a full page ad in the New York Times stating I could hold the Droid X any way I like. They clearly lied.

And most importantly, it comes with a
double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just
about anywhere to make crystal clear calls

After 22 days? Apple brought all this upon themselves. Now take a free bumper and shut the heck up!

Smart move by Apple.

The one big mistake Apple has made in this is calling the i4 antenna issues a "non-issue." They really should have acknowledged it, said they were working on a fix, and THEN shown clips like these. It would have garnered a lot more support.

Have you looked at Apple stock lately or iPhone 4 sales?

Metal Object?

Place a metal object to bridge the lower left side of an iPhone 4

Place a pipe wrench along the left side of the iPhone 4 while balancing a full 3/8 inch socket set on top. Then turn on your weedeater and your blender while pushing down on the toaster handle with two slices of dark rye bread inserted....

I'm betting Apple didn't test for users holding the phone while wearing chain mail..... Their market share in the medieval cellular business would have sucked...

If you are going to argue that then you really have ZERO clue what you are talking about and just repeating apple BS.

The problem is the death grip is only cause by holding your phone unnaturally. The pinky touch of death can happen when holding the phone normally. You pinky just has to touch that small spot and boom phone call ended.

I'm glad you clarified where you stand on this issue cause I almost thought I didn't know anything lol.

You're basically saying bridging the gap shorts the antennae and drops a call. Period.

Let's discuss. 1) The metal bands around the phone are the antennae. Meaning, touching the phone normally bridges the gap regardless because all your fingers attach to your hands. 2) Shorting antennae means they wouldn't work at all. Meaning no one at any time, regardless of signal strength, could make a phone call holding the phone at all. Which just isn't the case.

This is simply about signal strength and the "death grip." People like you are trying to point out something that isn't even a problem. I have death gripped and pinky touched my iPhone 4 and nothing happens. I just happen to have strong signal. Unlike other phones, of all shapes and sizes and brands, that can lose dramatic signal in low signal strength areas. It's just the reality whether you want to believe it or not.

No, all phones just lose 4+ bars when held normally. Not sure who can hold their phone with one finger and why that point matters. Please explain why it matters.

Lets just conveniently forget the fact that most people holding a phone normally will have a finger or part of their hand over that spot? Yea?

iPhone 4 isn't plagued by a death grip; the finger of death would be more appropriate. I'd like to see Apple touch competitors' phones with a single finger in a spot and try to recreate the signal issue.

My home is in an area where I only get around 4 out of 7 bars on my Nokia smartphone; not exceptional at all. I can do whatever grip I want with my phone and it's still 4 out of 7 bars. I can even wrap the entire phone with both my hands and experience no loss of reception. Explain that Apple.

What's so magical and revolutionary about a design flaw? Stop shoving the blame off yourself and do something about it other than bringing other companies down to your level Apple. Apple's more concerned about their pride and image being destroyed by a recall than the satisfaction of their customers. You should start worrying now.

Just wanna say i have an iPhone 4. It's never dropped a call. touching the lower left has zero effect and At&T's service is better in this part of Connecticut and most places i've visited than any other service so :p

You really hurt them bad buddy, you got them!
Have you looked at Apple stock lately or iPhone 4 sales?

What an idiotic statement. So by your childish response I should continue to support a company just because their stock is doing well.

Just because one million people agree on something doesn't necessarily make it right.

Have you tried it with your Droid X?

If you want to compare Apples to Apples you must use dBm!!!

Dude, you don't have a clue. dBm is only PART of what factors into good or bad reception. One phone could measure a lower dBm level and still have a better quality and more reliable connection because of how it processes the signal. Saying you have to compare dBm is like comparing RPM's in engines. My car's RPM's are much lower than my lawnmowers, does that mean my car is slower than my lawnmower?
