Yea, if you like to tickle your face while talking on the phone. The dud has his fingers wrapped around on the front of the phone.

One: That doesn't affect the signal. The antenna is on the side.
Two: That IS normal. I touch the screen on the iPhone every time I make a call (on my friend's) and so does everyone else.

The very fact Apple delayed the release of the white-back iPhone 4 tells me only one thing: Apple is quietly redesigning the iPhone 4 to correct two known problems with the device.

When the white-back iPhone 4 is released, don't be surprised you see changed internal circuitry to fix the proximity sensor issue and to improve reception quality and possibly a clear plastic covering over the metal antenna to prevent the electrical charge from the human body interfere with the cellphone reception. And that also means black-back iPhone 4's after a certain serial number will also incorporate the fixes, too.

Now this would cause a **** storm!

Actually

No, Apple already planned to do that before anyone knew about the antenna issues. Read previous MacRumors articles and you'll see what I mean.

but either way, all this bickering over reception and nobody ever mentions the FCC who is the the real enemy here. They restrict radio frequencies down to the point where the US has some of the worst and slowest cellular coverage in the world. they also restrict internet bandwidth, to the point where we are also close to the slowest.... if only they would allow more/better frequencies then we would never have reception issues again

Uh..what?

They just upped the definition of broadband to 4mbs. Thats "upped", you can't get away with less being called broadband anymore.

It's no huge step, but the FCC isn't whats keeping this country from advancing our connectivity.

I see Steve has brainwashed you too. Wait until you go to an area that doesn't have the STRONGEST AT&T signal available, then try it. If you even barely touch the phone in the wrong way, you lose a call. It's clearly not the same as other phones, as they would like you to believe. I've owned dozens of phones prior to the iP4 - never this issue. It's a joke and the people who believe this Apple PR BS haven't a brain far enough developed to think for themselves.

I don't see how other phones don't drop calls in areas with weak signals.

What, non-iPhones can make calls without service? I want one of those.

I will repeat it once more time...

Excluding the childish Apple's reaction... these tests are carried out by Apple... posted on Apple website... and obviously they benefit Apple's products!

Unless an independent magazine or lab performs the tests... this Apple's crying is useless and it puts Apple in a worst position on this matter.
I wonder what the PR people from Apple are thinking about this... once is ok... twice... meh!... but becoming the enemy of every other phone manufacturer will just make them angrier and probably they will bury Apple's iPhone sooner that later...

Of course... this is another reason for me to avoid buying any iPhone after the one I had last year :) Thanks Apple for your phone... it was good to get Android started but... you came to an end with your iOS... and Android is and will surpass you :D

Wait a sec...

How come the video on Youtube only has 305 views yet way more than 305 people watched the video??? Is Google rigging it?

Most likely not, but I do wonder... This could become the next Microsoft vs Netscape if this is somehow true.

Antenna Issue Aside...

That is one ugly phone. I think I had something like that once...back in 2002.

I played with my nephew's Droid some weeks ago and was thoroughly unimpressed. The first thing I noticed was how disorganized his home screen was...not being able to easily make heads or tales out of it. Granted, my time with it was minimal, but long enough to be completely unimpressed. (Loved the slide out keyboard. Feh...)

Yes

If the media wants to single out Apple, its perfectly find for Apple to bring in the pack. I, for one, am glad and I do hope they keep it coming.

Independent Magazine??

Son, you are truly naive.

...but not when the competition is more than happy to perpetuate some perceived Apple-only issue. Apple has every right, and should counter this nonsense in this fashion..."high road" be dammmed.
Not only the right, but the absolutely need to. If you don't punch back, you get beaten up.

Uh, what do you think everyone has been trying to do since 2007?

I didn't read the entire thread, but Apple's point, which is demonstrating the limitations of ANY internal antenna design, seems to have been lost on many posters...

Is Apple using some kind of black magic or something? Where is the 3g or 1x icon? Did there photoshop expert forget that one very big detail?

Your nephew probably customized his home screen. Something I couldn't do on my iPhone, iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS.

My Droid X is very clean. 5 icons going across the bottom.

I'm actually very impressed. Apple need to do that because all the children in the news media needed to see this. And they need to grow up and stop blowing this out of proportion. iPhone 4 has NO Antenna issues. Get over it.
+100

People just plain do not get it. This is not an Apple issue and that is why Apple is posting videos showing it. Apple is not trying to point fingers and ignore people they are trying to say there is no fix for this issue as it is a physics issue that has yet to be solved. It is also not likely going to be fixed by phone manufacturers at all since it really has to do with signal.

All phones have signals that can be blocked by different materials such as human fingers. Different wireless frequencies pass through materials differently. For example 802.11 B/G/N signals have issue passing through bullet proof glass. To solve this they are going to have to find a frequency that does not interfere with other devices and is not harmful to living things that can pass through human tissue without loosing signal. Then they are going to have to revamp the entire cellular network system of all providers to support the new frequency. So until such a signal is developed that provides safe, strong signal despite human tissue interference and works well for cellular communication there will not be progress on this issue beyond what the phone makers are already doing by changing antennas and trying different configurations to try and artificially boost signal strength, which takes power and on a battery operated device is a premium.

Apple is taking heat because its Apple. Why are other phones not getting this press? Because honestly no other phones get the amount of attention that Apple Phones do. Lets be honest, when Nokia launched their latest phone was their line ups for it? Were people camping in front of stores for the latest Nokia phone?? How many people even know what the latest Nokia Phone was? When companies like Nokia or Samsung or LG release a new phone most people don't really care. It is not a flagship device that sells millions in first few weeks that draws media attention. There also is not the same kind of community aspect for other companies phones. People think this is wide spread because of sites like this where people talk about Apple products. There isn't a huge Nokia fan base out there where people get all bent out of shape over the latest Nokia handset. Apple has no choice but to respond when its' competitors are slamming them for something that no phone developer has managed to get around. Apple is putting their money where their mouths are. Free cases for something that is not really their fault and they are making sure people are aware that its an industry problem not an iPhone problem.

Apple may not be perfect but at least they try to not only do what they can to make a bad situation better but also try and make sure people understand the situation.

Apple points out one and only one spot that is problematic, the gap between the two parts on the lower left corner. What's sad is that if they just flipped the rim around 180° and made the weak spot the upper right, probably far fewer people would complain because almost no one holds their phone there. I realize there is another gap on the antenna rim, but Apple has not mentioned that as a problem spot ("The attenuation weak spot is the black strip in the lower left corner of the band.").

I did this same test with the iPhone 4, Palm Pre Plus, Droid X and HTC Incredible and they all have similar signal issues. I posted it on youtube on my channel and fanboys of all phones don't believe me. Some say the iPhone 4 is best, while others say the Droid X is best or I did the test wrong and on and on. I wish people would just understand what happens when you put your hand in front of a signal it can cause issues.

You my friend... make no sense.

He's likely referring to the fact that having an alleged 'single point of failure,' which so many have been gloating about, is irrelevant.

Not to mention, that bridging the gap hasn't affected mine, nor does it for a majority of others.

...... Because your Droid X only has 5 apps. Congrats, you've downloaded everything on the Droid App Store!

Ok, I'm kidding. But really, who wants a Droid? Nobody uses those things. They're ugly, not innovative, messy, and limited to way less apps than the iPhone. Especially with a jailbreak...
