couldn't Samsung simply get back at Apple by NOT making Apple's stuff? I mean, come on.

Would likely hurt Samsung more than it would Apple. Apple can always find a replacement. Samsung...not so much

I did not know that TSMC produces LCD panels, RAM, SSD drives or flash memory. If Samsung stops supplying those to Apple, Apple is dead.

Newsflash; Samsung isn't the only manufacturer of those components.

Can only be 1 reason, Apple are worried.

If they felt totally confident in their product then they would not feel any threat from others and need to try something like this on.

Or it could be down to if you don't protect it, you lose it.

If Apple cannot beat them....they sue them. Way to go Apple, you are devoid of morals and innovation.

When can we officially say that Apple is now the New Microsoft?

As soon as you give us the go ahead oh wise one.

I know i was just playing with ya.

But I find it hard to sue one of your most important vendor. They got someone else to replace samsung?

OMG Dude! Do you know how many people I talk to on these that say those kind of things that are like serious?

There needs to be a universal way you show text when you're being sarcastic.

Samsung is a big company. They will go over to the R&D department and chew them out for jacking with their biggest supplier. I'm sure they'll work it out in some kind of deal.

OH snap! What if it's intentional. What if Apple just wants a better deal on LCD. So they find the products that look like theirs, sue for patents and then settle out of court with a 10yrs deal to discount the cost of LCDs in their other contracts!!?!?!

I hear it will be hard to find a vendor to replace samsung who can provide the quantity with the required quality, in short enough time. year maybe? Can apple live without selling ipad/iphone for a year?

Samsung is exclusive maker of A4, A5 I believe.

why stop at screens? A4? A5? I believe samsung is exclusive maker for them.

yes, the A4, A5 were manufactured by Samsung.

they also supply Apple's flash memory as well.

"The A4 chip comes stacked with another variety of memory chips from Samsung—known as DRAM, for dynamic random-access memory—according to iFixit, which said it used X-ray photography of the chips' plastic packaging. The proximity of the chips suggests that Samsung also manufactured the A4 for Apple, said Kyle Wiens, iFixit's chief executive."

How dare Samsung make their devices look cool :) I can understand why Apple would protect their look.

actually you're wrong. Xerox sued Apple once they found out Apple was suing Microsoft with regards to their GUI, which had its origins in Xerox labs, and military connections before even that (think DARPA).

so if all was fine and dandy, why did Xerox sue Apple? You're sugarcoating, and i have a problem with that.

Sorry Brizo, but you are wrong:

Midway through the suit, Xerox filed a lawsuit against Apple claiming Apple had infringed copyrights Xerox held on its GUIs. Xerox had invited the Macintosh design team to view their GUI computers at the PARC research lab; these visits had been very influential on the development of the Macintosh GUI. Xerox's lawsuit appeared to be a defensive move to ensure that if Apple v. Microsoft established that "look and feel" was copyrightable, then Xerox would be the primary beneficiary, rather than Apple. The Xerox case was dismissed.

It was a power move. Just business.

You know before you make a fool of yourself you could just read Wikipedia to verify what you are saying.

I agree apple isn't suing just for the sake of winning but to

1. slow down introduction of galaxy s2,
2. force samsung to cross-license patents (samsung has enough that sony and ibm do so with samsung. MS did with apple after their lawsuit was over.)
3. force samsung to give apple exclusive access to latest stuff like 2GHz mobile cpu that samsung just announced (looks like samsung didn't want to behave like what intel does with giving apple early access to latest stuff).

They likely would've procured supply to last well into the future whilst looking to other manufacturers. There was a rumor that Apple was already lining up a replacement chip fabricating company a few months back.

Would Apple really launch an attack without preparing themselves for all possible outcomes? i wouldn't and i don't have an MBA

procured supply to last well into the future??? Is that why we are having 2 - 3 wait times?

It's all business, right. Apple is very business aggressive. It makes more sense to me to say, "Yes Samsung has some questionable product designs and Apple has the right to sue, but the reason for suing is not just the design."

If that's the reason why people on here want to slam Apple then cool. But, to say they don't actually look the same or they weren't first or bla bla bla that's just ludicrous. They were.

So slam Apple for being aggressive business men who will take a swop at things like your 1,2,3 within their patient complaint.

If you think about it wouldn't this be like the "Earmarks" of the business world? They'll be suing for XYZ, but they're really going for ABC.

how am i wrong? i'm wrong that Xerox didn't sue? All I was claiming was that Xerox sued Apple. You were giving this rosy picture that there was no friction between Xerox and Apple when there CLEARLY was, as a lawsuit was filed against Apple.

And btw, sourcing wikipedia without a link makes me cringe. If you're gonna source your material, please provide a link.

Funny, apple sues Sammy and all we really discover is that apple has never invented anything and is just the first of the copycats.

Would rather have samsung any day, least it will last!

Colour me not surprised.

I live in a house where everything is Samsung from groceries to oven. The oven doesn't work regularly, the vacuum cleaner has broken, and the groceries are often mildewed. Samsung's quality control is complete shyte.

Still, I don't find this lawsuit amusing at all.

Aren't they blaming that on the tsunami?

daneoni seems to be saying apple has procured enough parts to last in case samsung for some reason stops shipping products in response to this attack by apple against samsung. and my statement is how can apple be stockpiling parts when wait time of ipad is 2 - 3 weeks. apple can't be stockpiling parts when they can't get enough parts to meet demand at this moment.

They only sued in case the outcome of the legitimate lawsuit (A vs MS) ended in MS's favor then they could try to get a pice of the Apple pie that was not theirs. :)

K? I'm not explaining this to you anymore. If you have anymore questions please talk to your Papa.

No Apple had MONTHS to design iphone AFTER LG Prada was revealed.

Source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Prada_(KE850)

---excerpt---
We consider that Apple copied the Prada phone after the design was unveiled when it was presented in the iF Design Award and won the prize in September 2006.
------

Not necessarily saying Apple really copied LG Prada BUT if they wanted to, they had the time, in terms of months. NOT a week.

Seriously? When you look at how polished the original iPhone was, I don't believe that even Apple could pull that one off in a matter of months. Look at some of the half-baked tablet devices that were rushed to market in a matter of months.

I don't doubt that competitors could be working on similar things at the same time, but I stand by my position that the devices in question clearly resemble Apple's products and no one else's.

The competition "poo-poo'd" the iPod and were wrong then had to play catch-up. They laughed at the iPhone and had to play catch-up. They mocked and criticized the iPad and are now scrambling to compete in that space as well.

The only common thread is that the competing devices closely resemble Apple's designs, so close in fact that in some cases, you have to really look to determine which is which.

I agree. I was just quoting their press release. :D

failed to link your source, again. but i'm used to it. a lot of your comments on this thread have been all talk, with no substantive sourcing. at all.

you also fail at reading comprehension, as all I was claiming was that Xerox sued Apple, when you clearly insinuated that Apple and Xerox had no issues with each other, when they CLEARLY did.

slow down, read the post, and try again kiddo

I love Apple, but I am also an Apple realist. There is come crap they do that just freaking urks me!

But, suing Samsung... whatever.... They are the most sued company...eeh let'em give some of it back.

procured supply to last well into the future??? Is that why we are having 2 - 3 wait times?

Thats not necessarily because they haven't pre-purchased enough units...it's because demand is outstripping production.

But who would that be?

Apple already own Intrinsity and PA Semi and they've reportedly lined up TSMC too. As for screens; off the top of my head, LG, Wintek, TPK make screens, Toshiba, Hynix, Micron all make memory chips etc. Apple has rarely relied on a single vendor for anything as far as i remember. They've always given themselves options.

I linked my source above in my first response to you. It's your bad that you didn't click on it. FYI Mackido & Wikipedia (Are you to inapt to search on it? If you ask nicely I'll help you...... )

Xerox didn't have a problem, BTW. It was just business. Duh.

When Apple sues it is good.
When Apple is sued it is bad.

Hey, the new Camaro looks like a Charger...

I love Apples products but too many of their fans think Apple invented everything electronic like the computer, smartphone and tablet. For a fanbase that prides itself on being smarter than the average consumer they sure are ignorant. They really haven't invented anything except for their famous reality distortion field which I'm sure they've patented.
