Kind of like the Netflix deal with Obama I don’t quite get it. Oprah does have actual experience in TV and movies. And she is extremely successful. I just don’t see a broad appeal in her work.

Aside from the couple of decades helming the top rated show on daytime television and having literally tens of millions of truly slavish admirers who will follow the woman right into a volcano if she asked, I also don't see broad appeal.

Apple lost the Obamas but this could arguably be a much bigger prize. Oprah's audience is gigantic. If they're all signing up for Apple TV subscriptions and buying AppleTV's, that's a very large windfall for Apple, specially considering the halo effect of that audience staying/entering into Apple's ecosystem. This will result in sales of iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Apple Music, etc.

Put it this way: Oprah was able to start an entire network based on her dedicated audience. I don't really watch Oprah but I know that anything she recommends becomes a massive hit overnight. Imagine what she could do for Apple's TV ambitions.
The only way your scenario makes sense is if Oprah's gigantic audience doesn't already have Apple products. I'm going to go out on a limb and say a fair portion of them already do have Apple products. Also her audience isn't homogeneous in they blindly follow Oprah. She's had several failed ventures that her audience didn't like. I'm married to an Oprah fan, so I experience it first hand, unfortunately.

Should have learned from Disney that people are sick of Oprah.

This is one move I don’t agree with.

Just buy Netflix...
Netflix is valued more that Disney at today’s prices and that just makes me LOL.

Either Disney is significantly under valued or Netflix is significantly over valued or (probably) both.

Who has better content? Disney or Netflix? And even if you think they are equal, Disney has so much more...like, uh, physical parks and resorts all over the world, THE best movie studio, consumer products galore with distribution and a worldwide 5 star brand.

Apple would not buy Netflix or Disney, but Disney would be the WAY more valuable play. In the end, Netflix has some original content and a streaming service which is going to be competed on big time.

I'm getting a bit selfish here but Apple hasn't backed a single media endeavor for men.

Carpool Karaoke
A fake game show about Apps
A Witherspoon / Anniston collaboration
A thriller about a murderous psycho boyfriend
A partnership with Oprah

Am I missing something?

Girls and women between 13 and 35 are the biggest consumers. It doesn't hurt that a lot of content meant for women in that age range also appeals to a large segment of men. The opposite isn't as impactful.

This whole content thing is so weird. Apple has never even formally announced they’re getting into original content. They just started hiring people green lighting shows. Nobody knows what they’re ultimate plan is. According to Recode some rumors suggest it will be free content in the TV app, others suggest it will be part of a larger subscription offering with Apple Music, AppleCare etc. and a 3rd rumor says it will be a standalone service alarm Netflix.

I think I will let Apple do Apple here. I have yet to see mass agreement on this site with any decision Tim Cook has made since being selected to be CEO, but yet he has overseen quarter after quarter of record sales and profits. The same people claim everything Apple does now is a failure, but somehow they are 80% higher in revenue than when he took over. Nearly double, but the competition these people and the media fawn over are barely showing a profit if at all. The business graveyard is filled with companies who had massive revenues but not profit, because their investors finally said enough is enough.
Cook is doing a fantastic job. Absolutely phenomenal. Anyone who disagrees has personal vendettas because the product they want updated hasn’t been.

They also usually don’t understand business or executing a strategy at all.

Doesn't Oprah have enough money by now? She's the only person that becomes the spokesperson for Weight Watchers, eats bread, gains weight and still walks away with 100's of millions. I'm sure she'll be completely uninvolved in whatever she does for Apple, just like she was with SiriusXM. Apple has officially jumped the shark.
Sometimes it's more than just about THE MONEY.

I remember when a friend of mine almost got divorced because of her show. He would get home after work and his wife would tell him all the things he was doing wrong because he heard it on "Oprah." This was in the early years of her show when it had more of a near-Jerry Springer type format. Years later, she softened up the format and started attracting stars.

She's not a bad person, but she sure started as one. Not interested in her programing.

So sorry Steve, greed have taken over your company.
Now it’s official.
Believe that is what Tim and Oprah share.
RIP

I will get new hobby’s. Following Apple’s progress is of no inspiration anymore.
It’s depressing

I didn't say she wasn't very popular. I said she didn't have broad appeal. I think her audience is mostly women and probably a more particular subset. She is a great day time talk show host. That isn't prime time material and is the very specific genre of talk show. If Apple wants a daytime talk show then they've definitely hired the right person.

You have to remember something about MacRumors comments. "I don't see the broad appeal" translates directly to "this doesn't appeal to me".

Gawd, and the Mac business is getting further away....

I hear this all the time. And I am always amazed you all have not been paying attention. Since Steve Jobs came back to Apple, his goal has always been for Apple to get to a point where PCs are no longer relevant. And they have been following that strategy since.

Buying companies, like Netflix, just for the sake of having the asset is pointless if there isn’t strategic value. Why would Apple want to absorb Netflix’s overhead when they are on iOS and Apple TV without any cost to them? Buying them makes no sense when they can have them and make their own stuff at the same time, benefitting from both.

Apple should go back to being a computer company and stop making TV shows.

Opinion noted. However, if they stop doing TV that doesn’t equate to Macs being updated faster. Apple doesn’t operate on a fixed cycle for Macs.
