I’m ready to upgrade my M1 Mini in the next year with a M4 Pro Mini. The M1 still works great, but my workflow could benefit from a beefier, faster processor.

Apple can and most likely will us AI to cut off many macs that are just a few years old. Maybe they can say 12gb is the minimum spec needed for AI. In any case, they have the chance to give very little in terms or hardware speeds and mostly make it a system requirement thing if you want some Mac OS goodies. The higher benchmarks will come from the higher ram in the system and maybe they might put a fast HD in them too. But if all the AI was available to the lowest end M1 macs, there would be little reason to upgrade. Thats why they will cut them off from getting the same software the new systems get. I will be surprised if they don't go in this direction.

I'm using a 16inch M2 Max daily as a creative professional and really wondering if the upgrade to the M4 Max will be worth it...
Probably not. I know they added hardware AV1 decode, but I can’t recall which generation that was.

There's definitely precedent for new product launches to be press release only, even if it's introducing something like a redesign or next generation of chips. The M2 Pro and Max were launched via press release in January 23', and the 10th generation iPad which was a major redesign was also a press release.

Same here. Tried the Mac mini with M2 Pro in early 2023, but was annoyed by the high frequency sound of the fan. Returned it then. Hoping for an inaudible replacement of my M1 mini.

Oftentimes spec upgrades mean quicker exports, among other things. For me, most time is spent editing or composing the content. The 10% faster export is negligible in contrast to the hours creating, which new silicon hardly enhances, depending on the medium.

I can already tell you: unless your workflow is very heavy or you're not happy with your current spec SSD or RAM-wise it will not be worth it. Personally, I'm waiting for the redesigned chassis next year.

Is this rumored? My M1Pro is running like a hero. I just need a bigger SSD than 1TB so that's making me itch to upgrade. Then again, the 15" Air is basically enough for my needs - probably wait for M4 version of that and return the M3 Air that's sitting for me at the Apple Store right now.

The rumor was with the M4 iPad Pro thinner design, Apple is going to shift the rest of the Mac lineup to also thinner chassis down the road. Then additional related hardware changes that are related or can enable the slimming down are OLED, better battery tech, a thinner faceID module already on the iPhone etc. OLED especially has supply chain rumors that support it.

I'm also entertaining the idea of 15" Air instead of 14" Pro. Of course, you always want as much power as possible, but if the M4 Air had the option of 32GB RAM it should be enough for me. On the other hand, if there is a redesign I would stay with the Pro. The redesign is confirmed, but there is an option that it will be postponed to 2026 if Apple wants to release it with OLED.

No, 2026 - new design with OLED.
You write as if it was 100% confirmed somewhere, but that is not true. The redesign was planned for 2025, a postponement to 2026 is being considered because of OLED, but it is not confirmed anywhere that they will not decide on 2025 chassis redesign but with MiniLED.
