I'm also entertaining the idea of 15" Air instead of 14" Pro. Of course, you always want as much power as possible, but if the M4 Air had the option of 32GB RAM it should be enough for me. On the other hand, if there is a redesign I would stay with the Pro. The redesign is confirmed, but there is an option that it will be postponed to 2026 if Apple wants to release it with OLED.
I sold a 15" M2 Air a few weeks ago and ordered the M3 with EDU discount. I wanted dual external display support and sold the M2 for close to what I bought it for. The 16GB/1TB 15" Air sitting in the Apple Store waiting for pick-up, but I'll see what these announcements bring. I think the Airs won't get M4 until the spring.

As for 15" Air vs 14" it's really tough. I love my 14" MBP, but the 15" Air screen was excellent for productivity and aging eyesight. My M1 Pro lives mostly docked and on the road for work. The Air was around the house and for non-work stuff. Truthfully, the Air is easily powerful enough for my workflows including Multicam 4K FCP projects. A 15" Air with M4 and 2-4TB of SSD would be close to perfect for me.

I'm using a 16inch M2 Max daily as a creative professional and really wondering if the upgrade to the M4 Max will be worth it...
Me too. My guess is that the M2 Max with 96 RAM will remain just fine unless one is involved with things like 3D, Blender, etc. IMO for those usages M4 will be a big step up. M2s with lesser RAM will present as lame sooner of course.

Get ready, everybody, for the ALL NEW Macs! These Macs have the BEST, FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL M-series chips Apple has ever released in a Mac! This changes everything, all over again!

I have a love-hate relationship with Apple. I love the design, the performance and OS, but hate their anti-consumer practices, I wish I could upgrade the RAM and SSD without being subjected to Apple's exorbitant prices. Nonetheless, I will most likely purchase the base Mac Mini M4 if they maintain the price of the current model.

If you are already teasing a Mac mini close to the size of an Apple TV just make one that also is an apple tv and can function as a games console running baldurs gate 3 n stuff.

And make sure it has latest HDMI spec and Dolby Vision output, etc (please!)

Very similar position. Got a Day 1 14" M1 Pro (32GB / 1TB) - love the machine, but it's probably a bit overkill for what I really need based on what I'm using it for. As I use it more "like a laptop" now vs. docked, it would be nice to have the 15" MBA screen size. I also feel I could give up the ProMotion on the laptop, as I don't notice it as much / doesn't make as much of a difference (and also given the high latency of the MBP screens) than on my iPhone / iPad Pro...

I've also been thinking about waiting until the M4 MBAs are released next year, with hopefully 16GB as the base-line memory, and then I'd probably do a 32GB / 1TB config again.

I do not understand this fixation with FaceID on a laptop at all. Interaction with the laptop is always via the keyboard and touchpad, so unlocking with TouchID is literally an additional fraction of a second. The advantage is that you decide when it should be unlocked, and not that it will unlock every time you look at it, even at inconvenient moments when someone is standing next to you.
If you are going done that path, whats the fixation on touch ID. My apple watch unlocks my mac without any additional steps.

I can already tell you: unless your workflow is very heavy or you're not happy with your current spec SSD or RAM-wise it will not be worth it. Personally, I'm waiting for the redesigned chassis next year.
Curious as to why you are waiting for the redesigned chassis next year. What is wrong with the existing chassis that you are waiting for a new one?

This doesn’t bode well for a relevant update. I mean when the AirPod max got 5 minutes for just an usb-c connection and some colors…

Normally every fart Timmy makes gets well exposed in the media 🤔

I really hope we don't have to wait until the end of next week to find out if they've finally done away with the ridiculous charging port on the mouse. Given it will likely be the smallest of the products updated - with at very least USB-C, I suspect that will come last in the announcements - or maybe it'll come at the same time as the Mac mini?

I wonder if the decision to not do an event is because of the Russian unboxing videos? Stole their thunder, decided to do a soft launch instead?

Has there actually been any launches in the last few years where the thunder, lightning, rain, etc was not already pretty much fully out before the event. It seems that everything leaks before the events. And rarely a true "one more thing..." surprise.

My first reaction to this news is that the future of the mac is looking very good so I'm happy to see this.

If Apple announces, and implements, a long term strategy of continuous improvement of macOS stability across all the hardware platforms now available I will be more than pleased. As we used to say with monotonous regularity to the marketing guys back when I worked as a dev for a few software houses, "hey man, it's the steak, not the sizzle".

Sorry, but this is just stupid 😁 Problem is that you need an additional device, isn't it?

Heavy and I'm hoping for a redesigned keyboard. I really don't like the feel of it.

At least this time around there's no 8 GB RAM Macs, I hope. I have been waiting for the 16 GB RAM to become the new base RAM model.

Excited to see the latest compromises! :p
How about they take away the HDMI port on the Mac Mini? I’m ok with that BTW. I already use a dongle for one of my monitors. It’s not a big deal. We keep hearing that it’s going to get thicker. What’s the basis for that claim again?
