I actually register to answer the mysterious "google" question.

The phone "knows" where you live because of the Address book. DUH!!! Since the phones uses Itunes to sync, it'll sync all of your contacts(including yourself) in the phone. Go check your iPod if you don't believe me.

I was a certified iPhone hater until about 5 minutes ago. I guess that goes to show you the power of good advertising is crucial. Something inside me "clicked", and I realize I'd absolutely love to pull this thing out of my purse wherever I am to look up directions, make reservations, check out movie ratings on IMDB while at the local dvd shop, etc, etc. Steve Jobs yammering on about the phone didn't impress me. The calamari commercial sold me on it. Now I'm oddly excited myself. June 29th! :)

If you had one and someone asked you why they should get one too, you would give them a live example.

Done. Sold.

I took two screen shots. This is VERY interesting.

I always thought that "missing" icon on the far right of the third row was strangely suspicious. Jobs the aesthete would never let that ugly gap go out without being filled.

The only question is...what will fill it?

Is it just me or on the Map one did it seem like there was a GPS in it? Or does it use a preset area? Or do the cellphone towers allow the device to monitor the general area?

Hi
Speaking of fine print, has anyone noticed the "Minimum" in their "fine print"?

it states:

Use Requires "Minimum" 2 year activation plan

Wonder if you signed up for say a 3 year, if they will through any extra/discounts on service plans for Internet browsing/text messaging/email?

bigandtasty things that make you go hmmmmm
I'm pretty sure you can still sign up for one year if you prefer but it's very scarce that happens nowadays as it gets you very little, except, an early way out.

No, like the newest BlackBerries, it has location GPS so it knows where you are when you make the initial request.

So that its VERY CLEAR dont bother getting one if you have bad credit and need a "Pay-as-you-go" plan!:D

Right, just the word minimum threw me off. I had it in italics, but the quote font puts the whole thing in italics.

I really like the ads. This seems a lot like what I'd love them see them do for the mac ads. Something that shows how great actually using a mac is.

Great ads. Can't wait to see them announce the plans/prices for the 2 year agreement.

Seems to me that the response times (at least for the google maps application) are probably not accurately reflecting an Edge type connections. I doubt you'd be able to get those type of response times with a Wifi connection.

Yes, the blackberry. No, the iPhone. Incase you haven't noticed, any form of GPS has never been uttered by Apple nor does the spec sheet on the phone show GPS capabilities.

Hi
Agreed. AT&T in San Diego is horrible!

There's a real reason the billboards that say "AT&T, fewest dropped calls" also have fine print that say "based on nationwide results."
I was first with AT&T Wireless for one year, was with Cingular for two years [or was it four] -- They didn't last long did they? :D -- and, last week re-signed with at&t for another two years.

I feel I live in a pretty rural area ( Saint Cloud, MN region ) and I only have a couple of troublesome spots, otherwise, I'm more than happy with at&t / Cingular. Heck, I have to even give them high stars for customer service for the few times I had to ask them questions. The best is the unlimited M2M minutes and Rollover™. Nearly everyone I call is on Cingular and it makes my bills that much cheaper as I use so very few "anytime" minutes. My only small wish is that they get 3G here sometime this year. Doesn't look like it but just maybe...

What if you aren't at home when looking for a seafood restaurant?
...In fact, chances are, you won't be.

We don't know that.

iPhone has added traffic view to Google Maps application

iPhone has apparently added traffic view to the Google Maps application. Check out the new Calamari ad.

Logo on the phone is 'AT&T' not 'at&t'

Date is 3 June (today), nice touch

Time is 9:42 all the way through on all three ads. Faked for consistency, obviously.

Icons on the main screen are in a different order than in the older pictures.

The 'Web' button/icon at the bottom of the screen has been renamed to 'Safari', presumably to build brand awareness and make it easier for people when they see references to 'Safari' on websites (for compatibility, say).

2 year contract required, no other details (i.e., no separate statement about voice vs. data service)

Yeah, I think this has been pretty well expected. Have you ever used google traffic though? Not all that useful in my area right now, but hopefully they'll expand it soon and make it what it ought to be.

i'll 2nd that one. i have a feeling at&t is going to mess this up some whole thing up with the iPhone.

I agree. People on Apple's bulletin board are already complaining that local AT&T stores will only sell the iPhones to new customers to save inventory. And was told to buy from Apple.

I'd be willing to bet you can set the default zip code as a setting on the phone pretty easily. If you're just somewhere else for a bit, then you can easily type in the zip code. Then again, it wouldn't be beyond the capabilities of the technology to know where you were based on the cell towers you were using, if AT&T and Google were to work out that high a level of integration (somewhat doubtful, but very cool if they have). Either way, I agree that there is pretty much ZERO chance that there is a gps in the iPhone.

Every phone for the last 5 years has HAD location GPS. (It's BEEN THE LAW, So 'yes we do know that')

Here's how the iPhone map "locate me" works.

Clicking on "Directions to here" will currently at the next step "attempt to locate you" (right now it won't give turn by turn directions, but does update the dot when it thinks you might have made it to the "next step")

However if for some reason it doesn't have your GPS fix, it will default to a button saying "from home address" or "enter location"

You really shouldn't make your guesses sound like fact. Even if it were fact, you'd be in a heap of legal trouble as anyone who can even breath on an iPhone is likely to have agreed to a NDA.

So I just heard from a friend of mine that the Apple Store Managers were told to plan on extended hours for the iPhone launch. He hinted that they may stay open for 48 hours straight for the launch. I found this to be quite interesting.

Quite interesting indeed. I wonder if demand for the iPhone will outstrip supply... ;)
