Hi
I'll admit that I didn't read all posts. I read a lot of them and I'd like to re-iterate some things.
First, the AT&T vs. at&t. This isn't a mistake or whatnot. I just got a Sync ( SGH-A707 ) a week ago and while it has the new at&t logo on the keypad and at&t branded on both sides of the display housing, it reads AT&T for the provider. <See photos>
The 2 year contract was known since the initial announcement. This counts for new customers and likely counts for those who qualify for contract renewal -- A few months away from the end of their current Cingular contract. Of course, this is mostly true of any other phone that any other carrier sells. While I would think that at&t would be willing to sell you a phone at MSRP ( some insane amount ), they more want your service business. Plus, if you would pay MSRP on most phones through a carrier, you'd probably find them cheaper through a regular retailer. Anywho...Again...The iPhone was always announced as only being able to be purchased by those able to sign a new / another 2 year contract length.
Assisted GPS or A-GPS is certainly a possibility but everything is still guess work. No 3G on this version, so video conferencing or other streaming type services are 99.999% likely out of the question. Apple initially said that the iPhone could not be used as a BT modem but this is rumored to be changed by release. The US version will be locked to at&t and Apple has claimed that not even the battery is "user replaceable" so it's more than likely that the SIM card will be inaccessible ( easily ) for at least this version. I would guess this won't change with the Europe and Asia versions but only time will tell.
Third party. Apple will most certainly allow third party developers. Hasn't this been confirmed? I think, EA does the iPod games. The only thing being is that it isn't going to be a Version Tracker type scenario. Potential developers will need to submit their projects to Apple for thorough testing and I would guess that the apps -- like the iPod -- will only be available through something like the iTMS. Apple -- rightfully so -- has huge priority on stability. This is a phone after all and if they allowed anyone and their grandpa develop applications for it, well, we'd have M$ Windows on our hands -- literally. And who would honestly put up with BSODs, freezes, ... on your phone?!?
I was so 'pumped' to get an iPhone and re-sign my contract then but seeing as I don't have the $$$ by any means or overwhelming interest of using the data features, paying $600 for a phone and almost double what I pay per month for phone service is senseless. Even if I did have extra finances, it would likely be a poor choice on my part. The only reason to purchase such a device and only use the phone function is 'flare'. One needs to have data services with this and I wouldn't see it a mistake if at&t forced at least some Media Bundle on them. If you don't purchase data services, you shouldn't be purchasing such a phone <period> Heck, I lightly considered the media options with my Sync purchase but, thankfully, it wasn't a difficult choice. Well, it wasn't even a choice as it requires 3G service ( coverage ) and I'm no where near it. Rochester, MN is the only place in the state that has some 3G coverage and I'm ~3 hours driving time away from there. Oh well, I'll still go and play with one if they have them on display.
