changes to google maps

a couple of more changes

the old google maps UI from apple.com/iphone

oldmaps.jpg

and the new one from the ads

newmaps.jpg

As you can see there is an icon with two arrows and and icon with a car.
A calculated guess says directions and traffic information - readily available google maps features. Also, on the website walkthroughs, you had

olddetail.jpg

but now it's

directions.jpg

you now have a hyperlink and also "directions to here"

but how will they do directions? triangulate you or "zipcode to zipcode"? my guess is the latter.

Edit 1:As a few pointed out - the Maps widget is Infinite Loop:

edit 2: also, just noticed a "book" icon in the search field in the ad version - so bookmarked locations?

Boredom is the best excuse for nitpicking iPhone ads. :D

With Google Maps playing such a prominent part in Apple's advertising, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the iPhone has GPS. Here's to hoping!

Considering both Apple's specs and the FCC submission don't show any GPS info I WOULD be surprised (as would the FCC) and so, no... there will be no GPS this time around.

maybe you can enter a zip code as default location, and it will go to around that location unless you enter a different one

That's how the widget's work, so yeah. I presume so.

Just a bit of trivia...

I don't know if anyone had noticed it before, but the app icon for Maps is actually a tiny rendition of One, Infinite Loop... :apple:

[edit: heh, arose beat me to it just half an hour ago... :p ]

I hope that they have either GPS or Cell information readily available for contextual searches (and tagging the photos one takes with the camera too).

Interesting how the iPhone used to say "at&t" but now it says "AT&T" despite the fact that the official company logo is "at&t."

...Inconsistencies like that bother me.

(For the record, I prefer "AT&T" more - for both the iPhone and logo.)

Cell phones must be aware of location due to data being passed back and forth between the cell towers correct? Then it would know its approximate location wouldn't it?

Anybody seen it on "Never Been an iPod" right at the beggining, when the cell phone is unlocked and camera switches for a better view on four buttons at the bottom? First unlocked, last row of icons on screen are 3: Calculator, notes and settings.

Next scene, finger on "ipod" button shows this last row changed from last 3 icons to 4: Clock, calculator, notes and settings.

Same happens on "How-to". You can see when "ipod" is pressed, how "notes" fades off to the left and on the next scene it fades off to the right.

Does that bring back old rumor on a new unseen feature/button?:D

It would be a huge disappointment if the iPhone's maps didn't use triangulation/GPS for directions.

At the very least, I would expect the phone to know where I am to start with, but it would be a huge plus if the phone was able to give me turn-by-turn directions similar to Verizon Navigator.

If you notice the bluetooth icon is lit up. Maybe it's connected to an external GPS receiver via bluetooth and that's how it located the closest seafood restaurant?

Still wonder if Apple put in live video conferencing through iChat with the iPhone. That would be quite interesting (maybe one of Leopard's "Top Secret" feature).
I wish. But not with the camera on the back, they won't.

Yes, it's called triangulation.

This would be enough to give the phone a starting point for the directions, but I'm not sure that it's accurate enough to give turn-by-turn instructions.

I believe Verizon's service uses a combination of both triangulation and GPS.

Another change is the transition animation between the iPod app and landscape Coverflow. In the demo videos the UI elements rotate but in the ad there is just a simple crossfade.

index finger

with a qwerty keyboard is anyone else worried by the display of the hand model using a index finger at a snails pace then two thumbs to type quickly on the keyboard. one big component of the iphone for me is the ability to use the keyboard quickly to respond to emails, i can text faster than the model typed on a regular phone pad....this concerns me

Just to play it safe I have a few criticisms of these adds....
1: they are from ATT, not apple... this is not consistent of apple
2: they totally don't follow apple's history of never!!!!! telling a date for availability in the future.
3: if you watch the video the part of the iphone that causes it to switch from widescreen to straight up seems to be off timing???????
4: also there are a few times he hits the screen and the screen doesn't respond
5: not to mention it's seems like a very poor add.

1. uh, these were made by Apple rememeber the same people that made 1984??, these also resemble the old iPod nano ad

2. i dont know why one would critisize this, now we know the date!! and actually, Apple's most famous ad revealed the release date of the Macintosh

3. If your talking about when they guy plays videos, this is because when u play a video, it automatically goes to wide screen, then the guy turns it a second later to emphasize this.
4. thats because u have to double click. they want to make it like a computer!

5 thats your opinion, I thought the ads were pretty cool since they showed a few capabilites the iPhone has.

You can type on it with two hands. They just had the hand model use one hand so the camera would be able to see what was on the screen.

I love the fact that these ads are a pure demonstration of the functionality of the phone. To me, it looked awesome, and made me want to own one. I got a very strong sense of how integrated everything is on the phone.

This is the kind of ad many have been clamoring for Apple to produce for OSX: let the functionality speak for itself. I think that even iPhone skeptics are going to think it looks pretty impressive from those ads.

Good work.

Oooh, that's the most interesting thing pointed out yet. I wonder what it is.

I want that music! I'm hoping it's something I can download from iTunes like the iPhone teaser music. ;)

you CAN

You can type on it with two hands. They just had the hand model use one hand so the camera would be able to see what was on the screen.

i'm sure you COULD use two hands but the pads on your thumbs are much too big to be accurate on such a small screen. I'd say it's gonna end up being slower than text recognition on current cell phones for actual words but it's gonna be much faster when you want to put some character that falls under the "1" and when you're typing a word that's not in the dictionary...

Agency

for your skeptics & haters,

To my knowledge the New ATT has used the same advert company Apple has. This is to be consistent with advertising and promotion. Apple and the New ATT are working very hard together to match and accompany each other needs.

Beautiful and wonderful commercials. Very simple and effective. I could not ask for more. Well done.

Very very excited for this product. :)

The ad was produced between Apple and their ad agency - ATT was not involved. That will be the case going forward. ATT will work with Apple's agency for print material.

The iPhone has error-correction technology. It knows if you've made an error based on dictionary words and proximity of keys on the keyboard and fixes typos automatically. Obviously it won't catch all of them, but I hear it works pretty well.
