The "kool-aid" comment was for the copycat remark. Seriously, some people need to get out into the world more.
As for the Smart TV's, no they're not perfect, but they exist already.

As for the capabilities comment, many poster's are talking about Apple producing a device with limited or no HDMI or other external connectors.
I was simply adding to the discussion on the subject.

We good now or do you have anything else to add?

My point was that you, along with others, are just making stuff up as if it's fact, no-one knows what the capabilities are regarding HDMI, you chose to carry on discussing that as if it was fact, that's why i challenged you on it. there's absolutely nothing to suggest that there won't be one. Although since HDMI is a standard for all tv's at the time, it could be easily argued that there will be HDMI on that basis.

I know what you were referring to in the kool-aid comment, using the kool-aid phrase is just basically calling another user a fanboy, as i said before. You should take your own advice and get out more rather than throw the kool-aid comment around...

My point about the smart tv's is that just cos they're already out, doesn't mean they're perfect. Apple tend to take existing flawed/rushed/underutilised things and do them right, along with doing their own things. Plus no harm in taking something from Samsung, since Samsung have been poaching from apple all these years. Siri comes out, the new samsung galaxy s3 gets S-Voice? that's just for the latest thing that happened.....

Pretty much any TV or BD player will give you these today with the exception of iTunes.
The ATV remote is TOO minimalist in my opinion. Too many clicks to get simple tasks done.
It needs a touch pad or something.

Yes alot of TV's and BD players have those, but the interface on the samsung tv and BD player for youtube and all that is shockingly awful, especially compared to the apple tv interface......

You're trying to say Samsung copied Siri with S-Voice?
S-Voice is Vlingo (and they even state that in the documentation) with some new enhancements.
Vlingo has also been around longer than Siri, which Apple bought, not created.
Both Siri and Vlingo are both powered by the same Nuance speech engine.

So really... who is poaching from who again?

Personal preference... I personally hate the ATV interface. To bloated when you consider the limited capabilities of the ATV remote.

Um..Samsung ALREADY has this face recognition, voice control, and gesture control:

http://www.samsung.com/us/2012-smart-tv/#navigation

So who's copying who?

Microsoft had it before Samsung on the Kinect.... :p

But Samsung's implementation of their Android phones.....I would definitely NOT WANT 4"X10 of the same horrible glitchy tech. No thank you.

exactly! lol. samsung just seems to poorly execute stuff. i saw a galaxy tab and another android tablet, both running the same version of the software and the tab just stuttered swiping from screen to screen, the other did not do so....

samsung copied apple by buying an existing product and integrating it, which you just explained for me, thanks for that.....

I wonder how long after it released Samsung will offer something similar with the exact same features but with a rounder bezel claiming its completely different?

Samsung already offer an LED TV with voice control, built in camera and gesture control..... ES8000 Series 8 SMART Full HD LED TV........

Owning last years 8000 series the TV has the best screen I have ever had.

And before the "cheap Chinese rubbish" card gets thrown about, I've owned a Samsung for 5 years and its still going strong. I own Apple computers and I don't think you can beat them, I own a beautiful 46" Samsung 8000 series and its the best I've seen. I'm not sure why we have to follow this "One brand is god and everything they ever make will be the best" rule. Lets wait and see.......

I'm having a tinfoil hat party later this week-- you should come.

What those articles talk about is passive listening, which while still being a major privacy concern, is vastly different than actively enabling one's personal device to spy.

Yes, any program you willfully install on your computer (Google's included) can use your computer in any way it's allowed (which is usually without limit). Computers also typically have an LED next to the camera to indicate they're in use, and it's not something that can be turned off on a MacBook.

Your Tinfoil hat remark is not appreciated, This is a very real issue. which is garnering real attention from privacy advocates including ACLU and EFF.

Also, the light as an indicator of whether or not your camera and mic are active is not true. Yes it works sometimes, but it has been proven that such devices can be activated remotely without any indicator that they are on.

If you think demeaning statements and sticking your head in the sand will make it any less of an important issue in the coming years you are wrong.

watch them put that same little VGA camera on this too...
LOL!
That would be so fu**** up if they did. But At the price that puppy would fetch, I think Apple will put a lot of high end bells and whistles in it.

Samsung didn't "buy" anything. They acquired a license. ;)
Nuance didn't sell their tech to Apple and they certainly didn't sell it to Samsung either.
Nuances is the smart one in the group.
License to everyone and collect the $$$.

He was asking what the aTV gives you that DirecTV does not. I realize that many Smart TVs and BD players offer much of the same features.

I also agree with you that the aTV remote is a little too minimalist. But you gotta agree that it's really cool. ;)

Haven't read all 8 pages of post so apologies if someone has said this before. Siri on a telly would be mental. It'd be like giving everyone in the living room a remote.

More importantly, how would I make sure the power of controlling the programme being watched stays with me!?
Just threaten to beat whichever family member is about to change the channel.

:D Sorry folks, this question just came off as so "father knows best" I had to say it.

you know what would **** with the Cable providers??

Six months free subscription to netflix et al with every new Apple Television set...

omg. why would someone bother 'shopping such a horrid mockup of an Apple television. The thunderbolt display design and appearance is NOT suited for a television. A television as thick as rendered in the image?? Maybe - circa 2007! And brushed aluminum would not be conducive to viewing (and would be bad for weight). This is just wrong on so many levels. Waste of time.

The opposite actually.
There is a difference between licensing a software package and buying a company to obtain a software package that still required a separate license for the part that actually made it work.

Apple bought a company for one product and then still had to acquire a license from Nuance. Remember, Apple doesn't own the voice IP behind Siri.
Samsung simply licensed Vlingo (which is owned by Nuance btw).
Smarter move IMO.

never happening, the profit margins are tiny and very few people are going to be willing to pay triple for an Apple tv when other brands already have amazing screens for cheap.

hehe it was meant to come across a bit tongue in cheek, clearly I failed miserably. :)

*whispers very quietly*

"Playboy channel please, Siri...", damn... too quiet...

*changes to 'shortcut' setting*

"Speciality Channel Alpha please, Siri..."
