If in the very narrow chance the Eu/ Epic or whatever force apple to change their stance I can imagine that whatever Appstore is available is ridiculously crippled. Api access diminished and cant access the wider benefits of the system (faceid, url routing etc...). And any in app payments cant be made if the app originated in the app store.

It will end up being a waste of everyones time.

(well that's what i would do if I were Apple).
Just like Google? Google had to pay €1.49 billion cause they promoted their own services on top of other competing services in their search engine. And this was just the fine of EU and only because Google changed its mind it wasn‘t higher.
https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/IP_19_1770

Now compare this to Apple competing with Apple Books against Kindle one their own platform and you get the idea ...

At least Android devices can install from other sources.
The “Choice” you are asking for is literally right there. If you want a phone that does the things you are talking about, buy an android. Simple. Don’t go messing with something that works exactly as designed because you want to side load or fragment. People who want “choice” on ios bought the wrong phone and should trade it in.

Are you aware of the fact that Apple sold that many iPhones just because of the apps? Without Instagram, Twitter, SnapChat, WhatsApp, Facebook and all the other apps Apple would be some kind of Blackberry today and Blackberry itself would still exist.
Apple stock would probably be somewhere around 600 billion dollars. Those 2 trillion dollars just wouldn‘t exist without the developers.
Yes and Apple takes very good care of those developers and has made many of them rich. Apple dev tools and support are second to none. They literally provide everything you need to have from learning code up to publishing an app for free. Want to publish? It’s a small fee for the dev account and you have instant access to millions of customers.

But by all means, let’s go ahead and break that because some brat ceo of a gaming company can’t play by the rules he agreed to before the game started.

It’s not ended, yet.

EPIC will win, and Apple will have to pay damages later.
Ohh boy this will be expensive for Apple... 🤣
damages for EPIC
damages for antitrust in EU
damages for antitrust in US
plus a few other damages

no, they just did what the judge allowed them to do.
waited, only closed the one account.

the fact Epic were given time to resubmit an old version and didn't shows they only wanted to make a point.
let's hope Google now do the same.

Well if Apple looses in court over this nothing is stopping Apple to start charging for all the development tools and software and not to mention all the staffing the 30% cut actually covers.

Thanks a lot Epic. You might have just started a negative precedent on all this. You are being greedy and it will probably backfire on you by effecting every single developer in the world.

Maybe Apple can just charge Epic for the dev tools.
Epic has shown they want to be treated differently to others. Apple just ensuring the return the favour requested.

Stores always take a cut. You sell Fortnite at Walmart, they take a cut. You sell in-app purchases in the App Store, then Apple is totally reasonable to want a cut. If you think you can thrive without the marketplace/middle-man, then by all means sell direct to consumers...
While I agree with your sentiment, Walmart doesn't take 30%. The mafia takes 30%, not legit resellers. And the argument that they should sell direct to consumers if they don't like Apple's 30% is void, because Apple doesn't allow you to install an app from anywhere other than the app store. That's the entire point of their argument. While Apple doesn't have a monopoly on smartphones, they DO have a monopoly on iOS apps for the iPhone.

That being said, to pull these shenanigans and then blame Apple is lame, and I hope they go out of business because of it.

Curious if Apple is paying attention to what their customers are doing post Fortnite ban and if they're faithful to Apple or to Fortnite? Consensus is to build your own gaming PC otherwise Playstation or Nintendo Switch consoles or Samsung for mobile. As expected of serious gamers, no one is switching to PUBG to remain faithful to Apple. Apple has to be careful here because once their customers switch to a real gaming platform they will never switch back especially considering the point of no return is real soon with upcoming Playstation 5, new powerful AMD and Nvidia GPUs for PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X releases.

Really - you're using 2 posts from Reddit, one from a reality TV show addict, another from someone with limited Karma, as proof that the Apple world is coming to an end?

Wow....just, wow...

Guess you don't get it much, huh?

Imagine a shopping mall. Shops have to pay to the owner of the shopping mall. What epic is asking for is to build its own shopping mall with the shopping mall and not have to pay the rent.
Clearly you don't even understand what is going on. This mall analogy is bad.

99€ per year is the dev subscription fee. Nothing free in Apple land.

The operating system is free as well as XCode as @cmaier mentioned.

Please enlighten us then why the analogy is wrong. Just saying "it's bad" doesn't a reasoned debate make.

Apple protecting their vision of the ecosystem, seems to me, more important than losing a few customers over a game, that may be the result of Epics deliberate sabotage of the iOS app.

This could go all ways (not only against Apple), but with Epic International developer account being pulled as well.

Epic may have won the battle, but we’ll see who wins the war.

So Epic break the rules with one app, and their entire portfolio is suspended?

Apple may have had a case to pull Fortnite, but there is no justification for the other apps, and this latest over-reaction will almost definitely portray Apple in a ngative light to customers and legislators.

I would think that Epic, Microsoft et al are quite happy with Apple's, "we are the biggest bully approach".
Perhaps educate yourself and understand what this is about and what the rules are. And it wasn’t just the rules, it has already gone in front of a judge and the judge warned EPIC that this is of their own making.

EPIC had ample time to not jeopardise their developer accounts by rectifying their submission. But instead EPIC chose to not do that. With choices come concquences.

If you think Apple is bad, Walmart is worse. Try to be a small business and have your product on the Walmart shelves. Walmart contracts are known to be draconian.

And yes, you pay Walmart to build their stores. It’s called margins. Where do you think Walmart have the money to build their stores? They didn’t just magically create their own money.

At the end, why would you even use Apple products if you despises Apple so much for making money? Get an Android and sideload.
It’s not about I use or not use Apple products. It is what about customers pay for.

You are correct that we pay Walmart from the margin. And for Apple, we already pay them when we buy the iphone. So the question is why we need to pay to them again (from margin)?

I just use Walmart just as a representation of brick and mortar store. No intention to compare their goods or bads.

Look at Mac and PCs, once we buy the machine, we can install anything we want. Developers can charge us fairly cause they get 100% of that. But for iphone (and probably android too. I don’t know what their cut is) everything as to be installed from the App Store.

Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth.

And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this company epic, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression.

There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense.

While I agree with your sentiment, Walmart doesn't take 30%.

Yup, on average they take more than 30%.

The mafia takes 30%, not legit resellers.

Every other platform exclusive app store (Google Play, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony) all take the same 30%.

And the argument that they should sell direct to consumers if they don't like Apple's 30% is void, because Apple doesn't allow you to install an app from anywhere other than the app store.

They could deliver their game as a web experience (using WebAssembly, they can do quite a bit) and sell directly. If they want to be in Apple’s App Store, they need to pay what Apple want to charge them.

While Apple doesn't have a monopoly on smartphones, they DO have a monopoly on iOS apps for the iPhone.

That is not how we define monopolies. The courts are quite clear on this:

’A "manufacturer's own products do not themselves compromise a relevant product market" and a "company does not violate the Sherman Act by virtue of the natural monopoly it holds over its own product"’

For this reason, the Pystar court held that a relevant market limited to the Mac OS was an improper, single-brand market, and dismissed tying claims based on Apple requiring only the Mac OS to be used on Apple computers.

In addition, the Peoplesoft case is another where the courts made clear that narrow definitions of markets are incorrect.

Many people purchase Apple products because of the safety, security and convenience of the App Store. They like that they do not have to create accounts for every app, nor are they forced to share their data without being asked (or even notified). Allowing this “choice” would eliminate that.

That being said, to pull these shenanigans and then blame Apple is lame, and I hope they go out of business because of it.

I do not hope they go out of business, but I think it may cost them much more than they were expecting. Many developers are now rethinking their use of Unreal Engine, as they have seen how little concern Epic has for them, being willing to risk its developer’s livelihoods for Epic’s own gain.

Well, Me as “soon” non-Apple user... giving up my whole current Apple Eco System iP11ProMax256, maxed out MacBookPro15-2016, AppleWatch S4, iPadPro2020Wifi. I have two kids, well my daughter is 19 not a kid anymore :D. But both own Android Phones already, was their own choice, they could have gotten some lower end iPhone like the XR, etc. but they wanted Android Phones. My wife is already p’off at her iPX, because Mask+FaceID sucks. Dunno what she will do with her 27” iMac(my ex. iMac) and her MacBookPro.

Well that’s our current iDevice state. The hardest to replace will be my iPad, but i think i will just get me MS Surface or a Wacom Cintiq Studio. I was mainly doing concept drawings on the iPad, Cintiq Studio would be nice for that. I already use a Wacom on my Ryzen workstation.

I had a AppleTV once, but sent it back, it was too family unfriendly. When I had it, I could not even login to multiple accounts, our family PS4Pro is doing fine since that time at our 75” Sony TV and Projector.

We don’t need any HomeKit stuff, our habits are too unpredictable, and I don’t want to become like somebody from the “WALL-E” movie.

As a developer, good that I always set my tech environment in a way that it can be used over multiple platforms.

My AppleWatch is being a brick anyway, I tend to use it less and less. Once I gave one to my wife for Bday, she didn’t like it, and we sent it back. The Watch was too fat on her wrist and masculine. Personally I’m tending to get some decent classic 2k-4k watch instead of another short term life 500€ tech trash.

Maps, I use the build-in one of my BMW.

To edit and grade videos I use DaVinci Resolve, anything else makes no sense to me.

The iOS security excuses are all non-sense. Our whole industry is built on non-apple devices, starting with the server running your online banking and ending with your linux router. I bet 99.9% of the ones in here who say iOS is so safe, and thats why they use it, runs a unsafe lower end 50$ Netgear router full of security holes 👍.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with being a fanboy, don’t worry. Enough of senseless flamewars in here for now, I have to get things done. :)

Apple has fallen so behind and the fanboys don’t even see it lol They have been trapped in their walled gardens so long they can’t see there are better options out there. Their arrogant response is “go get an android“ lmao Apple won’t stay on top forever. And if they continue to make the same boring iPhone for the 5th year in a row people will start to get tired and leave. The fanboys won’t leave no matter what but the average consumer will leave for the next best thing. Bet on it.

That is awesome. I am glad you have a choice and have chosen to take it. I hope we will no longer hear your complaints about an ecosystem in which you are no longer invested. Especially given that you clearly think that their products are not very good and do not meet your needs.
