What part of "8 month old device" are you not understanding?
What part of buy the device that fits your workflow needs are YOU not understanding? If stage manager is that mission critical to your needs that you absolutely must have it, then you know what the requirements are, so adjust accordingly. The iPad you bought 8 months ago didn’t stop working just because a new feature was announced. It’s not the end of the world. You’ll be okay I promise

It’s a complaint, but it ignores the issue. A car manufacturer can make a car and leave out certain features, yet offer it in a different, more expensive model. You don’t get to use the cheaper model and then demand that you should have access to the entire package.

As far as belittlement goes, I never did. I just think that people need to stop complaining about every little thing and get on with their lives. Apple never promised this in the previous OS, so why do you now expect it?
Yup. Their iPads still work, and they are getting more features. The complaints just crack me up haha

seems like a convenient explanation just like for the studio monitor's web cam that was launched BROKEN. we'll just fix it later. apple is definitely capable of doing it. they just dont feel like it right now.

but im not really complaining about features i dont really use. i use my ipad to draw, youtube, and sometimes sidecar. its not my main device.

I remember resizing windows in my first computer, a 80486, running at a full 66 MHz, with 4 MB RAM in 1993 running Windows 3.1. But yeah, definitely only a M1 is capable of handling this. Too much for an A14 or a A12Z to be able to handle!

It is way for you to upgrade. It is like running windows 11, which requires you to have a new intel or AMD 5000 processor. I still have a self built PC with a AMD 1600. there is a way around this, and it works fine. Apple however has control over the whole ecosphere, so if you don't have a M1 iPad, your screwed. Probably the worst factor here is the educational market. Most school districts cannot afford the more expense M1 iPads. So, high school students or families that cannot afford more expense iPads are the real victims here. Funny how Apple paints this picture of equality, yet the poor individuals and families are forever locked out of gaining a foot hold in education, or to aspire to one day get a career in the tech industry.

No one knew about stage manger until iPadOS 16 was released, it was released AFTER the last wave of iPads in the fall. People bought those iPads in the fall thinking all the new iOS features would be compatible because that's how it's been in the past since the iPad was released.

Apple pulled a **** move of limiting one of iPadOS 16s best features to only certain iPads.

Victims? It’s the dramatics of this post for me 😭

Just a fact here. In the end, Apple will sell billions of dollars worth of iPads anyway. So this “controversy” is absolutely meaningless

Spot on.

In fact they're likely to sell even more iPads of a higher spec because of the gated feature set. Which their balance sheet will reflect; and embolden them to do similar for future releases.

If people made an assumption that is their problem. The fact is Apple is STILL supporting those 8 month devices, and those devices will still be just as wonderful and fast as they were when they bought it. I get it. Progress is swift in the tech world and trying to keep up is futile. However, you were never promised stage manager and throwing a tantrum won’t change that fact. Want Stage Manager? Get a device that meets those requirements. Otherwise, move on. It really isn’t that hard.

How old the device is, is of no relevance. You don’t buy an iPhone SE and expect it to be the same as on iPhone Pro Max. And you don't buy a non M1 iPad and expect it to run the same as an M1 iPad.

Did you know, for example, that an iPad or iPhone that doesn’t have LiDAR, can’t use the LiDAR functionality?

This thread has become inundated with religious viewpoints on Apple. Yawn….
When you buy an iPhone SE you know it is not the top of the line as the iPhone Pro Max exists. When the 2020 iPad Pro was sold it was the top of the line iPad, you could not buy a more powerful iPad and there was no indication an M–based anything was coming. Ironically, LiDAR was the defining feature of the 2020 iPad Pro and future features that rely on it will probably be limited to M1 only iPads.

I'm not ignoring the issue at all. Stage Manager is a huge part of iPadOS 16 and finally does something about iPadOSs not great multitasking. While it's understandable that not all iPads can run separate apps on external displays, the multitasking feature on a single iPad is 110% doable period, end of story and it should be available on all brand new iPads. Why you're trying to argue that is beyond me.

People are pissed, rightfully so, and Apple needs to do something about it. A less than year old product should be getting all the updates. I'm not sure why that is so hard for you to grasp I really don't.
Personally, I upgraded my old iPad Pro to the M1 because it had a larger screen and had a chip in it that would ‘future proof' me as much as I could at the time. I have no doubt when it comes to iPadOS 17, I will lose out on features.

I don’t begrudge your resentment for the way Apple run their business, but these products have been out for so long that I am sure a person who understands this, understands that a lesser iPad won’t get the same upgrades as the Pro version. So you can moan about it all you like, but this is what it is. If you want a product that gets most of the upgrades in the future buy a device that is more likely to get the upgrades.

I’d rather Apple limit it to M1s rather than bin the idea because they couldn’t get it working smoothly on the other machines.

If anyone with a previous model really needs the feature they can just upgrade.

Or if they want they can just keep using their iPad the way it was always designed to be used when they bought it.

I believe that you can only assume that you will get most of the updates after 1 year. After 2, you will miss out on quite a few. Why do I believe this? Because it’s the way it has been since iPhone was upgraded in 2008.

It also gives itchy people another justification to upgrade

iPad Air M1 seems to be doing 6K/60 over USB-C and Apple claims that is only a 10/Gbs connection.
It may use VESA and MIPI's VDC-M which compression ratio is up to 5:1, more than DSC's 3:1. 6K at 60 Hz requires over 30 Gbit/s without compression, but it will be compressed to well below 10 Gbit/s with the technology for mobile devices.

I guess that’s no longer the case as it’s under a year old are missing this feature.

Like I said. It’s an assumption and doesn’t mean it’s always going to be the case.

I need to upgrade my Apple Watch Series 4. Should I get the Series 7? I’m sure I can upgrade every feature on it when iOS 9 comes out so that it’s the same as the Series 8! My Series 7 would only be 3 months old, so I would be okay, right?

stuff like this is never new.
iPhone 3G didn't get multitasking.

The 3G was too slow and had insufficient RAM anyway.

Mind, iirc, the OG iPhone never got the update with folder support that the iPhone 3G got even when they both had the same CPU and RAM.

If you are telling me the key features that make this “iPadOS” vs most of the same features that are shared with the phones are not supported after a couple years, it becomes hard to make the argument that there is any value in buying an iPad Pro unless all of the features you need are present in the current, shipping model and OS. Casualties of the march of progress may be an acceptable ethos for some, but if you burn too many people on high-dollar hardware purchases while doling out OS features at a snail’s-pace and narrowing support windows for key features, at some point, sales take a hit. The promise of iPadOS was that it would mature and it is not unreasonable for iPad customers to buy into the platform with the expectation they would grow with it.

It may be forgivable if this was a true architecture switch, the first version of “iPadOS” or some other significant update but this is a vertically integrated platform where Apple controls the roadmap and all the moving pieces. Apple has had no problems in the past introducing hardware support (lidar, UWB, 64-bit, etc.) for things that did not get supported in the OS until many years later for features that Apple wanted a large percentage of their customer base to enjoy.

3G was also a battery hog. I doubt the original iPhone even had the juice to spare.

I'm not talking about iPads that were for sale within the year, but were actually released years prior - I'm talking about iPads that were announced and released within the year - such as the iPad mini 6.

Every step they take to make the iPad more capable just means adding basic PC features to it. They need to make a touchscreen Mac and forget the separation. That's where they're headed anyway.

Apple should add it to beta 2 just to show it’s horrible. leave it untouched
Haha. Naw, iOS 16 Beta 1 has been stable for the most part. Let’s not create a narrative that iOS 16 is buggggy by adding it in Beta 2 and leaving it untouched. Lol. I think their engineers will be like, “Not this (s) again.” Lol
