Apple can never be first to anything ground breaking with form factor, because it requires world leading display innovation, and that all comes down to waiting for Samsung to innovate and implement first. So yeah, it's a good thing Samsung exists. OLED from the very beginning in mobile, and now MicroLed for consumer TV's. Absolute dominance.

That picture with the tiny fingerprint "sensor" looks kind of silly. If Apple is going to do under-screen fingerprint sensing, it would be pretty cool to have the entire screen be able to do that.

I disagree it’s not about being first it’s about being best. I’d much rather see Samsung the first and fail at something than see Apple be first and make a misstep.

Disagree. I have the 2 from last September and have loved it, but have been saying every day "if only this thing ran iOS". The form factor not not be useful for you, but it has been very helpful for me. Definitely not a gimmick.

it compromises my primary, essential use cases of a phone to make secondary, less important use cases better. to me, that's a gimmick.

They have all the money in the world, they are trying to make a car, throwing money at different phone tech should always be in the works.

You took the dust-filled keys right off my MacBook Pro. I'm used to Apple taking longer to deliver the new tech to have a more refined unit. However, it does seem like they have milked that reasoning to death over the past few years. Be it the charging pad that never was, air tags that may or may not come to pass, a new revamped Mac Pro that took several years to refresh, and now a foldable phone. While I'm still on board; just not impressed with their sling-shot approach to newer products. ☮️

Funny, given that Samsung has been completely frozen out of mini LED projects.

Upcoming mini LED components will be made by Epistar and Sanan, backlight by LG, and assembled by TSMT.

Well if they’re still testing it, that doesn’t bode well for it showing up in the 13’s. Still possible it gets implemented in the power button. Or side button. Whatever they’re calling it now.

I said this over a year ago and people here laughed at me and said to move on to better technology you loser.

But in a COVID world that isn't going away quickly, Apple iPhones are the least functional in being unlocked conveniently that is safe.

It's about time Tim Cook. He probably has the vaccine already so it wasn't a priority. I'm actually shocked it hasn't affected sales, but I guess 5G simply was just that popular.

Under-screen TouchID is okay as a back-up variant, I much prefer FaceID. I wonder if it will appear across the entire iPhone 13 product line? I'm perfectly fine with wireless charging, I seldom plug my iPhone 12 Pro in now. A smart 120Hz display will be nice. And I suppose the A15 will see a 20% speed improvement, there will be better 5G, and of course there will be some camera improvements. All in all, it may be a worthwhile update.

Apple has also considered removing the charging port for some iPhone models in favor of wireless charging,

I am curious of what solution Apple will Come up with to connect a wired CarPlay to a wireless iPhone.

If there is no solution, I know a lot of people would not be quick replace their vehicle (or headunit) just to use a portless iPhone.

Fingerprint sensor isn't even about the pandemic. Kuo got wind this plan as early as August 2019.

We've had 4 years of Face ID and we've seen marginal improvements.

Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors read the geography under the skin, bypassing dirt and liquid. Contrary to popular belief, with higher DPI sensors, it can be more secure than Face ID.
