Well if they’re still testing it, that doesn’t bode well for it showing up in the 13’s. Still possible it gets implemented in the power button. Or side button. Whatever they’re calling it now.

No apple tests features all the way up to before production starts sometimes..these things aren’t set in stone that early

I really want a flip iPhone that unfolded can have a +6.5 inches screen and folded could fit in the palm of my hand. Sadly it seems unlikely for 2021, so I think is more likely for 2022 or more for sure for 2023. But for sure, that’s the future and that will happen no doubt.

If it’s a couple years away i would imagine seeing signs of dual screen functionality in iOS13 as they usually start laying plans a couple years in advanced

Trust me or not, we will see flip iPhones that when folded would perfectly fit in the palm of our hands while will sport big screens when unfolded, all this in the mid-term future (3-4 years), that will be the trend. Cycles tend to repeat, and when the current glass slate design is wear enough, we will see cell market full of flip and foldable phones, iPhone included. And I insist, no matter what MR readers think or opine, that’s the inevitable future.

You might want to save this comment to that future. 😉

I hear that scientists are getting closer to discovering the problem that a folding screen solves ...

There will never be a foldable iPhone. Ridiculous gimmicks

Will we still be using masks in September when iPhone 13 is announced? It’s possible, but it seems like that that point we’ll have turned the corner on the pandemic. (I am personally pessimistic that this will be over by 2022.)

I disagree it’s not about being first it’s about being best. I’d much rather see Samsung the first and fail at something than see Apple be first and make a misstep.
There is no misstep. I hate to burst your bubble, but Apple doesn't lead when it comes to mobile tech to move the industry forward. They're a parts collector that waits for the real leaders like Samsung to innovate breakthroughs in mobile tech. Samsung innovates like no other. They create the display technology, that will now allow Apple to have a foldable. The Fold 2 is an amazing device, and it's a device that is absolutely necessary for the industry move forward. Apple follows because they have no choice but to wait for Samsung to innovate and create these industry dominating displays. Don't get so bothered by the facts. Facts are facts.

Well, Touch ID, why not make another breakthrough, double fingerprints, one on each side like how we hold our mobile facing ourselves. Design looks like a mini infrared port. Under screen scanner got a few issues;

1. static detected when phone is plug on a charging cable and fingers won’t register.

2. sweaty fingers won’t register most of the time.

3. If screen cracked, does the replacement comes with the scanner or it’s a separate module, else the replacement would cost almost half of the phone price.. sad case.

4. Some people might have a hard time to unlock the phone, maybe keep pressing on the screen to hard..

I really want TouchID to return, but I'm wondering whether an in-screen scanner would actually deliver the same level of convenience, pandemic-induced use cases such as being able to pay with your mask on notwithstanding.

Currently, I don't need to look at my phone to put the finger on the scanner. I can find the scanner while taking the phone out of my pocket and I don't even need to otherwise activate the phone first because pushing the home button on a locked phone will take me straight to the homescreen.

But with in-screen? Well, let's wait and see. But I can imagine that some TouchID diehards might be disappointed.

You didn’t burst my bubble at all because your opinion would have to actually matter to me to do that kiddo.

Nope. That’s a step backwards.

Nope. That’s a step backwards.
Do you really think that the current smartphone design is the final and most refined design for this product? Do you really think that the market will afford 10 more years with a design so many years dated? The common people will need to perceive a design change, something fresh and even something innovative to justify keeping yearly phone updates (although a flip phone doesn’t seem so innovative to us). So to achieve this perception among the consumers, the manufacturers will have to launch new designs sooner or later, and if you consider that the people will be wanting bigger screens every year, the only way to keep having bigger screens will be by launching flip and foldable smartphones. That’s it!
