MILLIONS?? Really? Hmm... I'm shocked. Sounds absurd, but you're the nor that did the exhaustive study, not me. /s
A smart phone NOT ideal for internet? Not only do I not think Apple would make such a product... I don't think ANYBODY would make such a product. *shudders to think*

Yes. Millions! A lot of people do not want a mobile gaming device. What they want is a MOBILE phone, which also offers to continue using the Apple "ecosystem".

LMAO! Is that the iClops? or iCyclops?

As far as i know a cyclops eye is in the middle of the head...just like all the phones have button in the middle of the phone. Why waste space both on top and bottom of phone front. It feels much better to press utton if up there and if the "multi app" window would open from top even better grip on phone.

I have no idea why people would want to carry this but I guess it's fine as long as they keep small phone. I don't want my phone bigger!!! Smaller. Less intrusive.

Screen size is not innovation - it is differentiation.

Apple should obviously differentiate now when smartphone market is getting quite mature. Get with the program Apple!

I would say this lineup actually makes sense:

3.5" (the iphone mini). focus on making the footprint as small as possible and as fashionable as possible. speed is not the focus.

Imagine the iPod nano but with 3.5" instead of 2".

4" - 4.5" (classic iphone). focus on speed and fashionable.

Imagine the iPod Touch. The thin profile and the nice metallic casing.

4.5" - 6". Apples 'phablet'.

And - why not enable iPads to make phone calls?!

I agree that 4.7-4.8 is the sweet spot here. I really wanna go back to using the iphone but the screen is just too small right now.

Am I the only one that doesn't want to be holding a freaking laptop screen up to my head?

No. Please no. Keep it at 4". More options make things tougher on developers and accessory providers, destroying two key advantages Apple currently has over Android's ridiculous fragmentation.

It would be pretty silly to hold a laptop up to your head.

Thankfully... these "phablets" aren't much bigger than your actual hand.

I know you were being hyperbolic with the laptop comment... but these phones aren't really that big.

Steve was right. Keep the screen small so you can operate it with just one hand.

You've got this amazing little machine in your pocket... why limit it to using it with one hand?

I use two hands most of the time... even on my 3.5" iPhone 4S

Why? Two-thumb typing... or I hold the phone in my left hand and use my right index finger for more accurate control. And isn't multi-touch still a thing?

I never understood the appeal of holding the phone in one hand and using the thumb of that same hand to control the phone.

Oh sure there are times and places for one-handed use. On a subway when you're holding the pole... or texting while driving.

But I spend most of my day NOT doing those types of things... so I really don't obsess over one-handed use.

I'm gonna guess that Steve actually wanted as many hands and fingers as possible all over the iPhone.

i Prefer smaller size

Iphone 5 suits me best, for larger screen I'm getting iPad.

I would like to see camera improvements, and tweaks in iOS compatibly with OSX. Fro example iPhoto, iMovie should have better user experience.

This is a mock up from french size of iPhone with 4.5" screen in current form and size format of iPhone 5:

I do agree with this - a 4.3-4.5" screen is the ideal maximum size for a PHONE - any larger becomes unwieldy. 4" on a modern smart phone used for web browsing/email etc is just a little too small to read easily on, there is no reason with current technology that a 4.3-4.5" screen could not be adapted to fit current iPhone dimensions or a very slight increase.

6" is ridiculous for a PHONE, fine for a mini iPad type mobile device but not a phone.

...really? just get an iPad mini. I never want a phone over 4.5 inches (and even that would be pushing it)

Edit: reading these comments, WHY?! Why would you want a phone that can't even fit in your pocket!? Do you realize how big 6" is?

Why there are so many ignorant people here which speaking for everyone? Maybe you have tiny pockets or don't have pockets at all. Why should I care about it? Nexus 7 fit in my pockets just fine. I so want apple to drop 4" size at all (or at least have rumors about it :p) - just to see a whining here. MacRumors, use this hint - it will be a huge thread

Lots of people myself included haven't even considered an iPhone because it's too small. My fingers aren't small enough.

My experience was different. I have fairly large fingers and don't have any problems with my iPhone. I do have some problems with my wife's slightly bigger Android phone (and she has real problems). I think the keyboard behaves differently (and the touch screen may be less sensitive on the Android one - it's a cheap Chinese model).

The screen on the other hand can be a bit small, but I should maybe get glasses :)

iOS 7 looks good on a 5" screen.

Apple, make it happen.

6 inches is too big. 5 inches would be more ideal.

Why are so many against bigger phones? Every phone manufacturer has varied their phone sizes for a reason. If you want a 4 inch iphone keep it but some of us want a bigger screen.

people lose their minds when there is talk about bigger screen.

I'm surprised so many people wan't bigger phones. I'm still more than happy with the screen on my iPhone 4.

I think 5" would be the ideal size too having seen the S4. Apple seem to have gotten complacent with the iPhone line of late, and a faster processor, a better camera, etc. are easy changes, and not revolutionary at all. Yes, the rumored fingerprint sensor in the home button sounds goods from a security point of view, but where's NFC, a bigger screen, better batteries, etc.? All genuine improvements and adding value to the brand/line. The 5S as rumored is evolution not revolution.

Apple Testing Prototype iPhones With Six-Inch Screens, Not Expected This Year

I bet most people here whining and bitching about a larger screen have never used one for a longer period. And it's just plain wrong those phones wouldn't fit in your pocket.

I am confident apple could easily design a nice 4,7" iPhone very small bezels and a compact and sleek housing. Just trust apple in this matter and don't be so stubborn and reactionary.

I like the 4 inch phone because I can type with ONE hand.
You have no idea how useful this is........

if they can find a way to increase the screen size, but doesn't compromise 1 hand typing, I'll definitely support it.

BTW
I have a galaxy s4, I love the screen size, it's amazing for movie viewing (I prefer this over iPhone 5), but not typing
It's hard to type on this.

I agree, I just printed out the 5" paper version PDF, and put it together(I'm Very bored). There is no way I can use this thing one handed, I can't even reach the settings button with my thumb, holding it the same way I hold my iPhone 5.

stop making big smartphones! It's horrible to look at when someone is using one. It's inconvenient and the light is very disturbing to others.

anything bigger than the current iphone looks stupid.

Compare it to buffalo shoes of the 90's or crocs in the 00's.

Big smartphones are the new bad taste.

oh and also stop using revolutionary and big smartphones in one sentence. Stop using revolutionary at all. Apple has the ability to create new markets and disrupt current markets, revolutionary it is not.

now everyone is going to cry that they don't want a screen this large even though no one is putting a gun to their head to buy one.

options are good!!

bring on the bigger screen.

Except the options go away because they stop selling the smaller phones with proper gig space with each passing year.

I have zero interest in lugging around a phablet.

4.7" / 4.8" at the very most would allow me to surf the web in comfort without getting ridiculously bulky.

If Apple go the 6" route, they'd better also have a high end option around the mid 4" mark or I'd be off (sadly).
