I wonder if it would be possible to get some metrics on average screen size in the Android world?
I've often asked myself this same question. Recently I crossed paths with an AT&T Wireless Regional Manager. When I posed the question to him, he was very clear in revealing his own amazement of just how strong the demand has been for the 4.8" equipped Galaxy S3, and in turn the current 5" S4. For obvious reasons specific sales were not revealed, but the conversation we had was very enlightening. By all indicators 5" is the current sweet spot.

Battery issue isn't that much of a concern even now (depending on how you want to look at it), my S4 survives longer than my iphone 5..

That highly depends on what you do with it. Overall all smartphones doesn't provide enough battery life including all Samsung pructs.

I stick with apple because I like Apple's ios systems the way it integrates with other devises and because of the materials, they are stronger (metal). It's just my taste as well, i really don't like plastic devices, it breaks much faster and i Travel a lot so that's why battery life is important for me + how strong the devise can be.

So what you are saying, if I get this right: If Apple doesn't release a bigger phone it is bad. And if Apple does release a bigger phone, it is also bad. Got it.

he has a point, A bigger screen is purely based on profit possibilities and because of popular demand why Apple is making a bigger screen but not based on Apple's philosophy. Steve Jobs hated big screens for phones, and let's face it, it was his baby....[In that context Apple is following, not leading as lightyear is stating, he has a point there.

(Sigh) Oh Apple, you are starting to follow the Pack instead of lead them.

Samsung and Google say jump, you say how many inches vertically?

you got a point.

Apple board: "an iphone should never have a screen larger than 3.5 inches" --> "ok then, 4 inches" --> "gang, how about 6 inches?"...

So no one was using the Internet on their phone before 4G came out? Thanks for clearing that up.

Wow, you TOTALLY got me!!!! Since, there used to only be 3G smart phones, I guess it does make perfect sense to still use that technology today... I'm going to recommend to ALL my friends & family that they sign two year contracts with old-ass 3G phones.

Thank YOU, sir!!!!

Ooh, you know what?? They used to be able to make phone calls with rotary phones.... maybe I'll get one of those??

How far back am I allowed to go before I seem like a retard, sir?
I figured you'd know.... you CLEARLY being the expert on what tech is or isn't outdated and all. I apologize for thinking 3G is dated & not a savvy choice for techie consumers. I'm glad you were there to roll your eyes at me & be snide.

:rolls eyes twice as much:

Man....went out with some friends last night, one has a Note 2. The screen on that thing is ridiculous, so I can only imagine what the 1080p Note 3 screen looks like. I was messing with the phone and the size really did not bother me at all. Using the phone with 1 hand is still very do-able.

This planted rumor/announcement by Apple and the WSJ is simply being rehashed to once again tame the expectations for the event on the 10th and keep people from leaving for the just announced Note 3. I've enjoyed my iPhone, but after playing with the Note 2 and my buddies answering all my "How would I do this" type questions on Android vs. the way I do things now on my iPhone, I am going with a Note 3 when it is released. Apple has waited too long for me. As always, when they start offering more options I will revisit.

This rumor is getting old. Every year we hear the same thing. Apple testing a bigger iphone. And that it would come out next year. The next year comes, and we hear they are still testing a bigger iphone. And wait till next year. I no longer believe this. I'll believe it, if they ever actually decide to release this to the public.

Which is why i said that it depends on how you want to look at it. Generally, batteries should last much longer. Based on my use, i'm charging my S4 less frequently than i do with my iphone 5. I'm averaging 140 days of travel a year, i moved from Apple because i reckon they've fallen behind in terms of usability. Turning Wifi on/off, airplane mode, data usage in foreign countries, just got tired of constantly having to go via settings to change anything. The new control center in ios7 is going to sort out some of those issues, but we're still talking about pre-defined shortcuts that we can't change according to our priority. I also think they way you organize your home screen, browsing between the different screens and not having to have all apps on the screen blocking the wallpaper

In terms of breaking much faster, plastic is a broad term, polycarbonate is surprisingly strong. As with anything, it depends on how it lands. There isn't exactly a small amount of smartphones with a cracked screen. I dropped my iphone 4 several times, always on the pavement, just got a few nasty bumps but no cracked screen. Friend of mine dropped his iphone 5, landet flat down, entire screen cracked. It's also a question of what you are afraid of breaking, if the backside of the phone is ****ed just get a new cover, simples.

My main reason for switching to an android based tablet was simply down to the need of something supports microsd, as i use it purely for entertainment on long flights + the obscene amount of waiting time. Pure pain in the ******* to go via Itunes to copy over movies, no matter if it's syncing or copying over to a folder ala the VLC app.

Fanboys before larger phones hit: "NEVER! 3.5 inches is perfect!"
Fanboys after the iphone 5: "Never! 4'' is perfect!"
Fanboys after the 6'' phone: "Guys, let's just focus on our fedoras from now on. Those aren't getting bigger anytime soon."

There is only one problem with options, accessories. With limited options we get a very strong accessory market. The more options we have, the more fragmented the offerings. This is why the iPhone has some of the best accessory options over all those other guys (Galaxy Sx users are starting to get some of this...but still not as strong).

I just wish I had a dock for my iPhone 5. The fact that Apple doesn't sell one is really lame. I haven't looked at 3rd party options yet. Anyone know a good iPhone 5 dock?

First off - this really isn't news. Apple probably tests prototypes of hundreds of device combinations that never reach fruition. Not that a 6" phone would be cray-cray.

Personally - while the Samsung 3 note is intriguing - I'm not sure I (personally) would want to carry around a phone that size. I just picked up a GS4 and love the size. I could go MAYBE a little bigger - but not much. 5" is a great sweet spot.

But no doubt between now and when/if Apple released an iPhone 6" - some people will continue to mock Android phone sizes. And then when/if Apple releases theirs - it will be praises and the perfect size. We've seen it before. Even when Apple bumped up to 4"

But again - I don't see this as a big newsworthy item. Jobs and team prototyped several sizes for the iPad too. Right now we only have the two sizes. And I'm not sure we would have had the Mini if Jobs were still around. Note I didn't say we wouldn't. I just think it's less likely.

Yeah it's pretty interesting what happens when you actually hold a phablet like the note 2. It doesn't feel that bad, it feels good. If you are used to an iPhone, the extra screen size of the note2 does feel better, and emailing, sms, surfing etc. all feel much easier. When you just see one in a shop window, you think 'thats ridiculous, I would never want to drag that around in my pocket...'
I think as people actually try them out, they become more popular. I would have never considered one until I played with it a bit. An Apple alternative would be great for me however, as I have a mac and use the contacts, calendars, notes, iTunes etc. I know it can all be overcome, but the easiest choice for me is always another iPhone. I hate that! Time is running out on my Apple loyalty though too! I love my iPhone, but my tablet is too big, and the phone too small... As stupid as I initially thought phablets were, I'm warming up to the idea. If apple made one, I'd be all over it.

Why there are so many ignorant people here which speaking for everyone? Maybe you have tiny pockets or don't have pockets at all. Why should I care about it? Nexus 7 fit in my pockets just fine. I so want apple to drop 4" size at all (or at least have rumors about it :p) - just to see a whining here. MacRumors, use this hint - it will be a huge thread

Wow exactly how do you fit a 7 inch tablet in your pocket? Do you have to wear very saggy pants? Is there a special place for the tablet?

How quickly the tone on this board changes from the "stupidly big S4 and Note" to a great thing when Apple is finally doing it. Hypocrisy at its best...

You know that these forums are inhabited by at least thousands of individuals who have ideals/opinions/hand size/workflows and that the fifty people arguing two weeks ago may not be the same fifty people here right now...

...right?

People seem to have the wrong idea about the battery life of big phones, my favourite thing about my Note 2, besides the screen, is its amazing battery life.

It's the first smartphone that i've had which i can forget to charge up at night and still have enough juice to last the entire next day. Miles ahead of my iPhone. A 3100mah battery does that.

Big screens = big batteries

But I do realize that a phone this big is not for everyone. And 6'' is definitely too big.

PS: And yes, it does fit in any pocket that I have, you don't need a man purse to carry it like I saw someone say a few pages ago.

6 inch's... isn't that a bit too big for an smartphone screen? How about around the 4.7 to 5 inch size for the iPhone??

You seem genuinely hurt, want to talk about it?

Oh sure there are times and places for one-handed use. On a subway when you're holding the pole... or texting while driving.

But I spend most of my day NOT doing those types of things....

I surely hope that you NEVER text when you are driving. You or some other innocent driver will end up dead.

How many of you fell into Apple's advertising bull..?
"The finger goes from here to here", one hand operation, etc;
Wake up guys and girls, it is 2013 after all, bigger screens are here and some are to come yet ;)
Wait for 10th of September, you'll be all surprised ;)

I had a student show me their Galaxy S4. It's nice enough I guess, but the screen/phone is a bit large for my tastes. The iphone 5 seems more reasonable to me (though I still use my iphone 4 :) ), even if the phone sizes are not terribly different--and I still prefer iOS. At the end of the day, it's opinion. If enough people want a larger phone, Apple will capitulate as it will sell (which is the bottom line for any company). I'm not sure that we need another 400 post thread debating the merits of the screen size yet again however...

A phone with a 4-inch display seems a bit small, so an increase to 4.5 inches or 4.8 inches (diagonal measure) is an improvement. That original Mac had a 9-inch display, and we all know how much of a pain that was to program, seeing only a small bit at a time.

Increasing the display to 6 inches would require a new solution for protecting and transporting the phone. Would every male need a man-purse?

It would enable more space for a larger battery, and videos would be easier to view.
