How quickly the tone on this board changes from the "stupidly big S4 and Note" to a great thing when Apple is finally doing it. Hypocrisy at its best...

Apple Fan boys at there best. Its a crap feature until they get it then its awesome.

Since it says apple is now more open to larger screens, does this mean Jobs stopped the enlargement of the iPhone?
.
I imagine he had a large say. That said, one has to also factor in the state of technology at the time. Even just a few years back the displays had some technical limitations such as impact on battery life, pixel density, large bezels making the device larger as well as potentially having a cost factor too. Certainly the market wasn't flooded with 5" devices even 24 months back.

Despite what some people may think, even if Jobs was still around I doubt we'd be seeing a flagship 3.5" iPhone today given the market and technology have moved on.

I feel like next year is way too late, considering this was an obvious choice from the 4s onwards, I'm almost dumbfounded it's not already here.

It's not about android or what else is going on with the mobile world but instead about fill the huge void between tablets. I would have thought it to be infinity easier to make a larger iphone that almost any other product as it's just a matter of choosing weight, res, battery life and screen size. The blueprint is already there with the 5!

Apple should have realised ages ago that there is room for a large and small iphone because they offer very different uses with the increased real estate.

It's not about money or following trends it's about making the best phone and for some that is not the iphone 5 and is only related to it's form factor.

Apple used to be ahead of the curve they seem so slow like microsoft slow at reacting to the tech advances in high res 5-6inch screens. It was a no brainer to make the ipod when everyone else was stumbling now apple is the one doing in the dark.

I agree with the size choices being necessary... I guess I just don't share your panicked sense of urgency. I think eventually we will have three screen sizes for iPad & three screen sizes for iPhone. I don't mind them trying several (or even dozens) of screen sizes & choose the PERFECT ones.
We are all going to get new phones at least every two years forever, so I'd MUCH prefer having everything come into fruition as it is appropriate, not half-baked, cobbled together crap.. a la Android.

...really? just get an iPad mini. I never want a phone over 4.5 inches (and even that would be pushing it)

Edit: reading these comments, WHY?! Why would you want a phone that can't even fit in your pocket!? Do you realize how big 6" is?
iPad mini? What ignorant thing to suggest. The last time I've checked iPads don't function as phones.
Btw; I do realise how big 6" is.

Multiple screen sizes on Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, iPod, iPad, and iMac's. So why not the iPhone?

I have to say I agree. I think it's fair to point out that size options often preceded innovation for new products. This happened with the iPods and led to the iPhone. This happened with MacBooks and led to the iPad.

Or maybe its even more accurate to point out that once a product begins to achieve higher demand and saturation, it is logical to increase the size options (and colors) as more, different types of people embrace the category.

All that said, by the time smartphones have saturated the world market (very soon?), technology will advance enough for Apple to introduce something else. Maybe it's something on our wrist? I don't wear a watch, but I could be convinced if it were as innovative/practical/simple as the iPhone or iPad.

I'm still against an overly large phone as I have normal sized hands. Of course, I'm a fan girl.

I wish they would go ahead and relase this already. :( I need an iphone with a bigger screen.

As one who flirted with Android for about 6 months during which time I had a Galaxy Note II, I look forward to Apple making a large screen phone.

I loved the Note itself. I look on enviously when I see one in the wild now.

But it ran Android, and Android is just a bag of false promises. It's ugly, it's disjointed, it's bloated, it's clunky.

The entire time I was on Android though, I missed iOS.

Only thing I miss about my iPhone 5 is the camera. S4 Active is killer and I think Android is excellent and none of the things you listed.

Apple should have released a 5"-ish model this fall. Thankfully it looks inevitable next year.

Oh great, Apple is finally working on a phone for their American market.

In other words, the iPhone up to this point was smaller, Apple had to design it for a worldwide market where they mostly cater to Asians with smaller hands.

The iPhone 5 is perfect if you have small hands but tiny if you have hands like mine. Given, I wear size 13 XW shoes, I'm over 6ft tall, weigh over 300lb. and have huge hands.

omg that is already a lot of attention for carrying one 6 inch... can't imagine carrying another..

Most of time when I talk, I use my blue-tooth earphone. So there is no problem even with a 6-inch iPhone as far as putting a big phone on your ears is concerned...

Yep yep yep. Agree 100%

Making a bigger version of a device isnt actually innovation. Why not just add call capability to the mini? Having so mny models is confusing for developers and is the reason Android apps stay phone apps and arent optimized for the hardware they are using. Unless apple plans to have responsive iOS apps id say its best to stick to two screen resolutions to make it easier for developers to come up with apps. Apples market share in the US is actully growing. It makes no sense to introduce yet another size screen.

Cook is the problem

Dear small screen crowd in denial that Apple is making a bigger phone,

I'll give you a life altering tip that may relieve your frustration: Please stop buying your pants at Gymboree and Baby Gap and you'll be able to easily fit a bigger phone than your iPhone 4S/5 in your pockets!

Seriously, come on, just say you don't want one, but don't use lame excuses like it not fitting in pockets. Do yourself a favor and ask your friends to lend you their Galaxy S4 (5 inch) or the HTC One (4.7 inch) and try putting it in your pocket. When you do that you'll realize how stupid the pocket excuse is.

Other options: Eating a lot of pasta and chocolate. Bigger ass - bigger trousers - bigger pockets. Or carrying a handbag.
I think, what really frustrates the people is the fact, that all innovation Tim Cook has to offer, are repainted colors, experiments with screensizes and plastic.

I think you're confusing screen size with resolution.
If they keep the same resolution.... screen size is irrelevant.
It would be optimized to the tablet... be it 7.9", 9.7", 13", etc..
Same goes with phone... pick a resolution... keep it the same on 4" iPhone, 6" iPhone, etc.

Ignorant? You've totally missed the point he was alluding to.
Given it's size and similar functionality at which point does one become the other?
What makes one device and iPod and another an iPad? If I add a phone function to my 46" TV is it now a phone?

6" screen iPhone? How about 8" or 10"?

I can understand 4.5" or even 5" and I would probably buy one. Anything bigger I know what I could get. iPad mini.
