Don't need or want a 6 inch iPhone. Don't really want a 5 inch iPhone for that matter.

But a 4.7 or 4.8 inch iPhone??? YES PLEASE Apple!!!! Preferably on the 10th!

Eh? You don't want a 5 inch iPhone, but do want a 4.8 inch one?

Right. The 5mm (diagonally) makes all the difference.

Aaaaaand that will make me switch back to iPhone.

I just need two devices, big screen smartphone and laptop. No place for tablet in my life just yet (cannot virtualize stuff/physical keyboard/power/etc). Next year I'll aim for the new MBA 13" + 5" iPhone.

With how many are sold why not just offer multiple sizes? Don't make it a spec game or anything. Keep everything else the same just have multiple screen sizes. Except vary the battery size to compensate for the extra draw of a larger screen.

They've most likely been prototyping bigger screens for more then a few years. And without doubt over the last year. You'd have to be very naive to think they haven't built bigger screened prototypes.

We know that as far back as two years ago Apple had larger screened iPhones being tested. Remember the tapered iPhone concept that had case manufacturers working over time when the 4S was launched. There were even limited sightings of wider larger screened devices. We know they have been working on this for several years. They know the competition is changing and now that Jobs is no longer heading the company...we have a chance of seeing it sooner than we might otherwise have. Remember how he famously stated that they wouldn't do a smaller iPad? Well the mini came along and was a huge sales success. Apple is the best tech company out there...and even they have to adapt to sales trends. Holding to the 3.5/4 inch size couldn't last forever....thankfully!

Ignorance is bliss, that is the statement for all one finger, brainwashed Apple ad users. Apple must truly love you. Thankfully you are insignificant minority, bring on a bigger screen :)

It seems that all the people who talk about Samsung's 'innovation' and how much better Android is, it all really boils down to screen size.

Oh, don't misconstrue my post. I still think Android is the better platform for those of us that like to tinker and customize. For useability, IMO, they're both on the same level now.

But after using my S4, Note 2, or OG for a few days, coming back to my iPhone 5 drives me insane. Some of it is the "walled garden" where I feel restricted, but mostly it's just that TINY screen.

And don't get me wrong...I have no desire for a 6-inch screen. The Note 2 is absolutely the largest I'd ever go in terms of device size and even it feels too big from time to time. For me, 4.7"-5" is the sweet spot. So I'd welcome a 4.8" iPhone with open arms. :D

We have a 4 inch iPhone and the 7 inch iPad mini. Maybe just adding the phone app to the iPad mini would be enough. Hell, put the app on all iOS devices that include the cell chip. That way you have a 4, 7 and 10 inch option. Maybe a 13 inch option if other rumors are to be believed. Seriously, having a spread of 3 inches between products allows for better market positioning. Having .5 inch incremental products would be counter productive in my opinion.

Being able to use an accurate pen in addition to fingers, is not.

Except for babies, people don't use just fingers for everything. We also use pens, pencils, crayons, brushes, etc.

I agree. It would be so nice to use either a stylus or fingers as needed. Fingers are too big for things like art apps and handwriting recognition. I wouldn't be surprised if many people can probably write faster than they can type.

As for screen sizes, I've said it before: combine the iPod, iPad & iPhone into one product at 4 different screen sizes: 3.5", 5.5", 7.5" & 9.5" or there abouts. Each size would have three options: Wi-Fi-only, Wi-fi + Data, & Wi-fi + Data + Voice. Simple as that.

4.5 or 4.7 inches is all they really need. The iPad mini can take care of the rest.

The use of phones has changed since the original iPhone debut. The iPhone's screen was humungous compared to others in 2007. Many people thought it was TOO large. I remember bringing my iPhone to a wedding in 2008, and showing pictures to relatives. Everyone remarked how HUGE the screen was. It was a different time.

Originally, phones were just that - phones. Texting was not common in the United States, and 'extra' features were usually to check the weather or stocks. A phone was a 'sometimes' device, and it was considered very uncool and geeky to use a phone out in public.

Now, it's not that way at all. Phones are used constantly throughout the day, and it's easier to get information using a larger screen. Texting is huge, Tweeting is huge, and the web is so much bigger, with so many more apps.

Apple hasn't embraced this change in the past 2 years like other companies have. It could be that the Apple employees are old-school (like me) who don't use their phones most of their waking hours, they generally use them as 'sometimes' devices like in 2007. Apple needs to wake up and create devices for the other part of the population who use phones all day long.

Note that when 'smart phones' first came out in 2007, teenagers did not embrace them at all. They were too expensive and geeky, that usually only 20 and 30-somethings used them. Now, teenagers seem to be the biggest 24/7 phone users. There's still a HUGE market for the 30+ crowd, but Apple needs to embrace the younger generation as well.

6" is way too big to fit comfortably in the pocket, but I'd TOTALLY buy a 4.8" or 5" iPhone.

The truth is that now a days I use my iPhone as an internet/email device more often than as an actual phone, so I'd totally appreciate a larger screen.

I don't understand the problem people have with bigger phones. I have a note 2, switched from the iphone 5, and I absolutely love the size.

Bigger phone means more room for improved internals - especially the battery. I cannot speak for the ladies, but as someone who wears casual as well as business attire, my note 2 fits in my pocket without any issue.

It's easier, in my opinion, to carry a 6" phone than a 4.x" phone and 7.x" tablet.

There is only one problem with options, accessories. With limited options we get a very strong accessory market. The more options we have, the more fragmented the offerings. This is why the iPhone has some of the best accessory options over all those other guys (Galaxy Sx users are starting to get some of this...but still not as strong).

if fragment is so important, they will not change to lightning interface.
and can you use iphone 4's case on iphone 5? if not, it is not a problem to change the screen more bigger

How quickly the tone on this board changes from the "stupidly big S4 and Note" to a great thing when Apple is finally doing it. Hypocrisy at its best...

Sorry, but thats a completely nitwitted comment.
The people who are opposed to larger phones are not the same people who post in support of them.
You're looking at all MacRumors posters as a singular 'them' .. and then criticising 'them' for their hypocrasy.
Idiotic.

Well-said and I couldn't agree more. I love Apple's products. The premium feel, the great looks, etc. But what drives me batty is the pace at which they advance in comparison to the rest of the phone world. I realize they created (or rather exploded) the market, but at some point they've got to realize they're beholden to the same standards as everyone else. Innovate, create, upgrade, etc...or get left behind.

Because of their incredibly loyal fans, they've not felt the pressure that other cell makers feel in the marketplace. But I feel like that's changing and it's time for them to play the game the way everyone else does. Does that mean they need to release 3 iPhones a year with varying sizes and specs (say like Samsung does where they throw everything at the wall and sees what sticks)? No. The once-a-year upgrade pace is fine, but if you're going to go that route, you'd better make sure the "upgraded" version the 2nd year is just that...an upgrade. And it better reflect what consumers want, not just what Apple THINKS you NEED.

Some people hate Samsung, HTC, LG, etc. because they view them as beneath Apple. Whatever, but I get that. But people can't deny that the success Samsung is having is pushing Apple to change the way they think about things and for us, the consumer, that's a good thing. It keeps Apple on their toes and keeps them constantly thinking about innovating. That's a huge plus for consumers, no matter where your loyalties lie.

Apple is testing prototypes of every sort. That's what big tech companies do. They create prototypes, they test them, and then decide if they want to actually turn them into products.

Just because Apple, or any company, is testing a prototype, does not mean they have decided to make it a product. It only means that a handful of engineers in a very big company have been tinkering a bit in a lab.

It's good that maybe Apple has realized that there needs to be more than one kind of iPhone. Other brands of phones come in many different sizes, which is in part why many people are using those. Back when smartphones were a new thing, one size was enough since people were just happy they could email from their phone. But now people have developed different tastes and uses for their phone, so this is probably necessary.

It worked with the iPad and the Mac, after all!

No. I disagree. It's not just screen size. There are a lot of compelling reasons people use Android. Screen size perhaps being a major contributor - but it's not all it boils down to.

Being forced to use a blunt stylus is an outdated concept.

Being able to use an accurate pen in addition to fingers, is not.

Except for babies, people don't use just fingers for everything. We also use pens, pencils, crayons, brushes, etc.

painting on tablets is fun but silly when you can do so much more and accurate designs using a digital wacom on regular pc's.
