Retina versus not (PPI) affects the sharpness of things on the screen but is completely irrelevant regarding just how much real estate you have to view a website. You could have a new hi-tech iPhone 6 with "super retina" 1304 PPI running a 2272x1280 screen, but the effective resolution, the actual size of the real estate that website layouts fit into, is still the same old iPhone 5's 568x320. Sure, everything would looks amazingly crisp. It would be almost unreal. But the website you're looking at would still show exactly the same number of words and paragraphs on the screen at a time. You'd still have exactly the same amount of scrolling to read all the content.

So, it would aid the discuss if either of you understood the difference between screen resolution and pixel density. I'm not saying you have to be a dev to understand what you're talking about, but as a dev, it's critical that I do. And I do.

We obvious differ on our interpretations of resolution and how you can consider the nexus 7 "lower" resolution. You can say you feel it's cramped for you. But the nexus 7's resolution is 1920×1200. The iPhone is 1136x640. The NEW iPad's is 2048-by-1536 - which is greater than the Nexus, true. But you compared it to the iPad 2nd gen - 1024x768.

So when you want to intimate that "we" don't know what we're talking about when it comes to resolution - don't make assumptions. Which is what you've done from the get go.

1) Because iPad releases have always occurred in Spring. The 128GB "update" doesn't count as the new model was originally released in the Spring.

2) Yep. I'm just suggesting it though. The invite points towards the iPhone Color. We'll just have to see.

The first three were in the spring, then they moved to a Fall release with the iPad 4 -Oct 2012(Source - MacRumors buyers guide and my own purchase history)

They obviously have moved it to a fall release schedule to it can release in the same time frame as other iOS devices- iPhone and iPods.

Larger Screen?

To me the I-phone fits perfect in your hand. I had you use a Galaxy for a long call and after 15 minutes wanted to throw it against the wall. Maxwell Smart's Shoe phone would of been more comfortable.

I think screen size opens the door to new innovation.

There's some really useful ideas that Samsung has brought into the Note 3.

Real estate means a lot.

The iPad is just a larger iPod Touch I remember reading a lot. And I agree (but not in the negative sense) because real estate means everything to the iPad. You cannot do (comfortably) a lot on a phone or iPod Touch that you can on a tablet.

Same thing with phone screen sizes. Opening up to a larger screen affords a better user experience in many cases because so much more can be done.

What about the small girls with small hands ? What should they do ? I understand there are giant people here with big hands but there are also smaller people, especially women.
What's the solution here ? If Apple insists having only one size ?

Poor eye sight.
Large hands.
More screen real estate.
Expanded size for better battery and / or additional hardware.
Thinner profile.

Add a pico projector, digitizer, dual cameras for some sort of movement tracking feature..

Wow, you TOTALLY got me!!!! Since, there used to only be 3G smart phones, I guess it does make perfect sense to still use that technology today... I'm going to recommend to ALL my friends & family that they sign two year contracts with old-ass 3G phones.

Thank YOU, sir!!!!

Ooh, you know what?? They used to be able to make phone calls with rotary phones.... maybe I'll get one of those??

How far back am I allowed to go before I seem like a retard, sir?
I figured you'd know.... you CLEARLY being the expert on what tech is or isn't outdated and all. I apologize for thinking 3G is dated & not a savvy choice for techie consumers. I'm glad you were there to roll your eyes at me & be snide.

:rolls eyes twice as much:

You really do seem offended my 3G lol.

Despite what some might believe. There is not one device/size for everyone. End of story.

I would be surprised if they went larger than 4.7" which looks and feels really good on the HTC One. I'm not convinced they'll go down the phablet route. If they did it would make more sense to make a larger iPod for portable gamers. A 5.5" iPod would be welcome.

You guys are missing the whole concept of what Apple is doing.

Again, they are skating to where the puck is. People are making fewer and fewer voice calls. I for one would take unlimited LTE data (no caps) for a pay-per-minute phone plan. I have thousands of rollover minutes through AT&T that I will never ever use, yet I accumulate them monthly.

The 6" iPhone is a response to the fact that many of us no longer talk on our phones, but communicate through text, web, social media, video chat, etc.

You look idiotic holding a 6" "phone" to your ear. It's unwieldy for constant phone use and doesn't make sense for anything but data-based applications.

Enter the iWatch. Pair your iWatch to your 6" iPhone. No need to pull your 6" phone our of your pocket and look like a moron. Your data input, web surfing, etc is done on the face of the phone. Menial tasks like voice calls are done with the iWatch when paired with your iPhone.

Skating to where the puck is people...

Not really disagreeing with you at all, but it seems your describing skating to where the puck is going to be, not where it is right now. Right now the puck is sitting in the corner where people are fumbling with phablets at their ears. The trick is going to be to know which direction the puck will go next to solve this for people.

It takes a world class player to anticipate where the puck is going to be consistently, and Apple has done this 3 times in a row under Jobs. The iPod, iPhone, and iPad were all game changers that created whole new markets Apple got to enjoy being the leader of because they figured out where the puck was going to be and beat everyone there - and not only that but executed with such quality that nobody except for Apple themselves could think of how to improve them let alone match them in their first iterations.

Now the competition is much tighter.

The iWatch is a true test of the Jobs Legacy in that we will see if the company can anticipate where the puck is going before anyone else for a fourth time running. There is a lot of pressure and expectation for them to deliver something out of the box that creates the "I need to have that" hype the other three iDevices managed to so well.

The iWatch needs to be something more than a replacement for phone calls with a larger phone. Don't we already have smart bluetooth earpieces for that? You can answer calls, get audible notifications, etc. The iWatch needs to be a companion you couldn't imagine leaving home without after you've tried it (much like the smartphone has become now). Biometrics and advanced personal assistant features will probably be a big part of that, but taking phone calls on your wrist will look almost as ridiculous as putting a phablet to your ear, wouldn't it? Maybe if the microphone and speaker were not on the top face, but rather the bottom of the strap? I think the strap design will be decisive for the iWatch, curved glass 180-200 degrees of usage in a sleek flat design would make it VERY compelling with the right feature set. Do NOT try to put regular iOS on it.

Sorry this got off topic, but I bit on your analogy and insight into what the product dynamic between the different devices might be.

I'm failing to understand why many here seem to think that a larger phone would be the only option. Did Apple do away with the regular iPad when they introduced the mini? There are far too many "___ inch phone is too big!!" comments in this thread. We get it, different people have different preferences.

no new iphone for me until bigger than 4" screen:mad:

Same here. I've really tried to like the 5's form factor but just can't. I prefer the 4 in that respect. I just find the long slender look of the 5 to be very feminine. Guess I prefer slightly more chunky phone :)

I have no doubt Apple will introduce larger screens, it's just a matter of when. This should be a priority to them so they can stem the tide of defections to android and windows based phones.

Samsung has a good variety of sizes and it has served them well, I'm sure this hasn't gone unnoticed to the Apple management and board.

No ****, sherlock. Bigger body, bigger battery. Which Android desperately needs.

Clearly you don't understand. Androids with bigger batteries have longer battery life. Sorry to burst your bubble. Android is not so inefficient that it drains 100% more battery than iOS. It's likely 5% more, max.

Bigger is better! Bring it on Apple :)

I'd be very happy with 5" and 6" screen options. Retina is great, but it certainly stills feels cramped doing certain things on a 4" screen.

Article should read

"Apple testing voice call capabilities on an iPad Mini"

Exactly - I DONT want an ipad mini sizes Screen. The current model need to stay the standard. 6in phones, etc are way too big and it really starts to get awkward with that thing in your pocket

What about the small girls with small hands ? What should they do ? I understand there are giant people here with big hands but there are also smaller people, especially women.

Most of the people I know with big phones are women. They don't seem to mind.

Many people (mostly those who never owned a larger screened phone) seem to think that one-handed usage is much harder on a larger phone. I'd say that for common tasks, it's not. Typing, reading, scrolling, most of that is easy to use one-handed even on huge screens.

I'm not sure how important one-handed use is anyway, at least the type that requires going all over the screen. See above. Now, for games... well, who does those one-handed anyway?

What's the solution here ? If Apple insists having only one size ?

Do you think Apple would insist on only one size? I mean, they already saw the light with the iPad and iPad mini.

Sure, but at the same time ...

1) Samsung tablets have Wacom digitizers.

Isn't the same as sitting behind a full sized monitor behind a very powerful pc that runs circles around your samsung. Not to mention that a samsung (or an ipad) are not able to use much of the needed tools you get will a full working version of photoshop cloud. It doesn't come even close.

For professional use it's a no no. Same when talking about taking photographs.

2) We can't carry regular pcs around like we can a tablet.

You sound like Gollum, we? I'm sure you considder your samsung as your preciousss and that's fine really, but let's stop the silly suggestion that the pads of today are close of being able to handle hundreds of layers for a ultra hd sized pictures with the same speed and possibilities when compared to a much more expensive full blast pc. That's just silly.

We have a 4 inch iPhone and the 7 inch iPad mini. Maybe just adding the phone app to the iPad mini would be enough. Hell, put the app on all iOS devices that include the cell chip. That way you have a 4, 7 and 10 inch option. Maybe a 13 inch option if other rumors are to be believed. Seriously, having a spread of 3 inches between products allows for better market positioning. Having .5 inch incremental products would be counter productive in my opinion.

The iPad mini is actually closer to 8"

So Apple makes a 4" phone and an 8" tablet. The 8" is definitely too large to carry every day as your mobile phone. So that's out.

But there's got to be some number between 4" and 8"

Personally... I like what the Moto X does with its 4.7" screen. Minimal bezels and little wasted space on the front.

Also... I think Apple has painted themselves into a corner with the home button. Yes... it's iconic... but it really takes up a lot of room. And since Apple has to be symmetrical... that same amount of space is wasted at the top too.

Look at how close the other phones' screens are to the bottom of the phone. That would aid in typing.

How would I fit that in my pocket?
My iPhone 4 with an otterbox already takes up a lot of room.
