Maybe it's just me but a 13" iPad just seems like it would be heavy and awkward to hold. But it could be a decent alternative to an 11" MBA if all you want is Office type functionality or drawing/painting and the like. But that gets into using it more like a dumbed down laptop than a tablet... sort of like the Surface RT.

I want a larger iphone and i envy the 5.5 samsung galaxy in size. The idea is to carry less and make things more functional. I as a consumer would rather have a 5.5 iphone vs an iphone 5 and an ipad mini/ipad. Granted this is would cannibalize sales which is why Apple has been reluctant to go in that direction so far.

I don't think it would canabilize sales. Using tablets have changed our phone and tablet behaviors. A larger screen size will address those changes.

Larger size is simply a stupid easy thing to market: "Hey look! It's bigger!.. Bigger MUST be better, right?".. It's how consumers have been conditioned for decades.

Actually, around the time the original iPhone was released, they were conditioned in exactly the opposite way. The original iPhone was _huge_ compared to other phones at the time, and was criticised for it. The LG Prada at that time had a 3 inch screen.

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to have my devices that fit my needs and my needs are:

- For quick and ultra portable: I have my iPhone 5 (don't like it any bigger, I even like the 3.5 screen better)

- For bigger screen and still ultra portable: I have my iPad mini

So you carry around both an iPhone and the iPad mini all the time? If you have a purse or bag, that can make sense.

For the rest of us, a single bigger screened phone is quite useful.

In any case, does everyone think that even if Apple comes out with a larger screen, they'll still keep the older smaller screen model around as well, for those who like it?

For me, the 9.7 is too small even if I put it on the piano music sheet rack. Music, reading boks, surfing the internet and previewing photos will be a vastly enhanced experience on a larger device. But lets see, it's just a roumor now. However, it will come at a higher price, wouldn't be surprised if the base model (expect at least 32GB memory) will be priced $700 or even higher.

Having said that, I wouldn't buy the first version of it but rather the second, as I did with the 9.7" iPad

Is it too small even if you crop it? I use Forscore. It has a crop feature that helps a lot.

Yes choice is good. However, if you've lived through a post-Jobs world before, you'll remember when Apple had so many products in their lineup they become irrelevant and confusing. The company lost focus and sped towards bankruptcy.

Let's hope that isn't happening again.

In fairness to what's going on now, what we have now are variations on a theme in terms of sizes.. During the Apple-without-Steve Jobs interregnum, There were different COMPUTERS.. Computers were specialized for particular applications. People had no clue what to buy.

4" is perfect

WTH? a larger iphone is for muppets. The iphone 5 sizing is just right, any larger and it can't fit in your pockets easily.

Your statements are missing the following words: "for me".

I also would like clarification on which muppet you're referencing. Can we be sure that Miss Piggy, Kermit, and Animal would be all happy with the same phone size? I get the impression that Miss Piggy is something of a size queen ;)

MacOS X has a touch device - either the trackpad, or the magic mouse. So the OS can handle it easily. It's the users who can't handle it long term, because the human arms are not built for that. You can do a simple experiment: Open your laptop, then point your finger at each of the four corners in sequence. Repeat this until you think your arm is falling off. Tell us how long you could do it.

The experience would be roughly the same as using my iPad sitting up on its smart cover on my desk.

A pro model ipad would be awesome for the photo/movie maker crowd. But Apple seems to always be testing stuff and seeing how feasible it is.
IMHO, if an iPhone drops next year with a screen like those galaxy phones with retina display all hell would break loose in the bi***!

That would mean Kermit has large hands and feet ;)

- For bigger screen and still ultra portable: I have my iPad mini

- For even bigger screen: I have my iPad

- For serious work AND still portable: I have my Macbook Air

- For taking over the world: I have my Mac Pro

I don't want a phone with 6.5, or 5.5, or 5.0, or related hybrid screen sizes that can't do the job as good as the 5 mentioned above. But that's just me. :D

You must have a huge "ultra Portable" bag I assume?

I've wanted a 13" iPad forever. If I had one, I might be able to go almost 100% laptopless.

I think they could get a 13 inch screen in a not much bigger device if the bezels were thinner. The iPad isn't that much smaller than the 13 inch MacBook screen. It would put more space between the Mini and the Pro?

Anybody suggesting iPad and a form of "max" has got to get on some form of "bad Apples" list...

Exactly.

The S3/S4 has a slightly bigger body... but a much larger screen.

Maybe if Apple was able to tame the top and bottom bezels... they could do a similar thing.

Well, you forgot about the 3rd dimension, as phones also have depth. Taking that into account one can see, that the iphone 5 has a volume of roundabout 55135 mm^3 and the S4 75324 mm^3. So the S4 is 36.6 % bigger than the iphone 5, while "only" having a 25% larger screen ;)

But I don't want to argue about the larger screen; Some might want a 5", whereas I'm very happy with the 4" by now (that might change though). I'd love to see the 2014 iphone getting even smaller than the iPhone 5 and I guess this is what's going to happen, if Apple keeps the 4" alone or alongside a possible larger iPhonbe.

I hope they do.

I prefer the size if my iPhone 5 to that of my work G-S3 . Even with me doing lots of photos, and quick edits for my site, and Instagram accounts on the fly with the 'tiny' screened iPhone.

I think choice is good for everyone!

Surface RT has poisoned the well...

But there's also the issue of one-handed use. After creating a TV commercial specifically arguing for the current screen size and the ability to touch the entire screen while holding the device in the same hand, do you think they will take a complete 180° and abandon that logic?

I certainly hope not, as I use my phone with one hand all the time. It's the best thing about the current screen size other than portability.

Apple did a 180 after poking fun of Verizon for not being able to surf and talk at the same time. Look where we are today?

Do you use it a lot that way, and what is your actual experience? I mean active use, not use as a movie player. My iPad has the smart cover, and I almost never use to have the iPad sitting on a desk.
