Part of what drives me nuts about all the people complaining about Apple is that they seem to not realize that anyone selling a product, that isn't the product's manufacturer, is charging the manufacturer to sell that product. Everything on the shelf at Home Depot, everything on Amazon, everything at Best Buy, all those companies are paying to have their products sitting there. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Sony, they're not at all unique. It's such misplaced anger.
If I want to refinish my cabinets, my cabinet maker isn't forcing me to refinish with their supplies or supplies sold in their store only. I have the freedom to buy from somewhere else. Retailer shelf space can be circumvented easily if that's all the argument you have to offer. Also, since there are multiple retailers, shelf space isn't as big as an issue as the App Store.
When people push proprietary, patented hardware only to control pricing in other industries, it's met with a ton of resistance.
I hope you see your logical fallacy.

So, would it still be a monopoly if Apple had just 1% of the Smartphone market?

You can’t go around just blindly applying terms without seeing the bigger picture.

Are Trader Joe’s operating a monopoly if they’re the only ones selling Trader Joe’s food?
They are indeed! No one will buy my “Furtrapper Frank’s” for some reason, but I’ve found they will readily buy it if it’s marked as Trader Joe’s. They should NOT have a monopoly on creating things with the Trader Joe’s name, HOW can I compete??

By the way, I find that my posts don’t get as many likes as TiggrToo, so the ONLY way for me to get more likes is to have the government step in to regulate the monopoly TiggrToo has over TiggrToo’s posts. It’s only fair. /s
But without games, Apple devices would slowly become unattractive for any kind of game and app development,
Without games, Apple devices would become unattractive for Vector Artwork, Social Networking, Project Tracking and Dating apps? Somehow, I find that hard to believe.
If a developer wants to distribute their goods from my garage, do I have to let them? Where does this inalienable right you have declared actually come from?
NO of COURSE not, don’t be RIDICULOUS! I mean... OK wait. Ummmm, ok, sooooo, maybe if like 40% of the people that want to purchase their goods, for whatever reason, have ended up INSIDE your garage (you know, you’ve got a pretty sweet garage and everything), then, yes, you have to let the developer distribute their goods from your garage. I think. Maybe? /s

I would like to have my BMW delivered with a Mercedes engine and an Audi drive-train.
I find it unfair that BMW has a monopoly on BMW engines and parts in their cars.

Sure, I could always hack it and change the engines and parts in my own garage, but legally I would likely never be able to put plates on the car, or get insurance, or anything else, except the right to drive it on my own private property.
Um, yes, you can swap engines and parts and legally drive the car 🙄 Stupid analogy is stupid 🙄

What is with you guys and and stupid analogies 🙄

I’m as big of a fan of Apple as anyone else here... but defending Apple on this is weird to me. You LIKE paying more for things as a consumer because of the high cut Apple takes because they can? Should Microsoft take 30% of every windows program, that you in turn pay for?

Apple led the way. Bringing an end to this model will likely mean the end of other companies trying to extort 30%.

You have the same options. Nobody forces you to use an Apple device and to be a part of the Apple ecosystem. There are many different phones out there too choose from. By your logic I should be able to purchase a Sony exclusive game on my Xbox. Nobody pushed Apple devices on you. And you can easily change devices. YOU HAVE THE CHOICE.

Do you really think Apple will benefit long term to be known by teenagers and 20 year olds who love gaming as the worst place to go and the worst hardware to buy if you love gaming?
Apple already IS known by teenagers 20 year olds on up as the worst place to go and the worst hardware if you love gaming. I mean, really, PC’s and consoles own gaming and will for the foreseeable future.

I’d go further and say that if you are using an iOS device as your MAIN gaming setup, then you don’t REALLY love gaming!

Like it or not, Apple isn’t wrong in this case. Epic signed the agreement knowing what the criteria was... they signed the contract to be offered and sold on Apples platform. That was their choice.

this is a bs case that is about to cause Epic to lose - a lot...

You do realize that at one time the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that slavery was legal. Just because a document is signed does not mean it is right and that it will hold up under scrutiny or time. That is why courts rule on contracts rather than have the police just enforce them directly.

Almost all contracts have a clause that states if any part of this contract is held unenforceable all other parts of the contract remain. This clause would not be needed unless it was common for contract provisions to be overruled by courts or judges.

Apple is as bad as MS of their era.

The amount of pro-Apple bias, even on a fan site like MR is unbelievable.

The same people would have rooted against the MS monopoly of past, now rooting for the Apple monopoly (cause Apple is somehow their friend).

That Apple can even cut out a company that displeases them shows how artificially locked-down their devices are. No consumer wins from that.

And even at Microsoft's monopoly heyday, Microsoft did not have the power to ban an app from a billion devices. That's an incredible power. There needs to be scrutiny on the use of such power.

Yes you feel like a unusual party attending online games when you are a Mac user. Apple Arcade I find humorous as a solution. Sorry.

Not really, they just realized how dependent of Apple they are in the moment.
And they are probably thinking about if they should join Epic and the others, or keep their business on this eroded hillside which can slip off anytime without reason.

Not really. Unity is simply making a game engine. They have no agenda of forcefully pushing their own store into someone else's store by using manipulative propaganda and victim tactics.

Remember when Adobe ran up a stink because Apple dropped Flash?

Same old 'Big Brother' nonsense back then, same again today.
And even at Microsoft's monopoly heyday, Microsoft did not have the power to ban an app from a billion devices. That's an incredible power that should not be in a single person's hands.
What on Earth are you talking about? Apple isn’t banning anything.

If a company breaks a rule that is written in a contract, it’s the author’s right to terminate that contract.

If Epic don’t like the terms (which, for the many years they’ve partnered with Apple, they haven’t kick up a fuss about), they can always go elsewhere. The point is - it’s not Apple’s fault that Epic broke a contract.

Apple anti-competitive practices hurt one group of people more than every other: The consumers, and yet a lot of people here cheer for it. And these are the same people that get offended when they're called sheep or fanboys.

Regardless what the contract says - the law is the law, that's what there are courts and contracts have dispute resolution mechanics., which may include arbitration, etc. It is not necessarily Apple who is right.

Regardless what happens, what Epic is doing, might end up benefiting other developers and us consumers in the long run, yet brain dead zombies keep cheering for Apple for getting more money - Newsflash: Apple doesn't care for you, they just care about getting your money. Unless you have a significant amount of stock invested in the company, you shouldn't be defending Apple (or any other corporation for that matter) such blindly.....Their practices only hurt us.

Price to the consumer is determined by what consumers will pay. If the underlying costs made the item unprofitable then it just wouldn't be sold. Who gets what cut really doesn't affect consumers.
