Can you briefly explain what there is to figure out?

When I don't sleep well it's pretty easy to figure out why; did not exercise enough, problems at work, did not meditate before sleep, eat too much sugar/caffeine before bed, family, etc. In most cases a watch is not going to know why I did not sleep well!
If nothing else, it's an automatic log. Combined with other apps that monitor your health, you have access to a more complete picture of you. And if you're on the difficult journey of going from unhealthy to getting in shape, the more evidence you see that your overall health is improving is additional motivation to keep at it.
 
One point just not correct in this article. The current Apple Watch does not have the battery for sleep traking 100% incorret.

First off, sleep tracking and current apps, the Apple Watch uses very little battery over 8 hours of sleep. Around 10%. Secondly if one turns on theater mode and do not disturb the number drops to arount 8% for 8 hours of sleep.

If one today needs sleep tracking, me. Battery management rather easy. My Apple Watch S3 battery management as follows:

The key, adjust the Apple daily charge time to two hours before bedtime. In my case, 8 or 9 pm. The next morning my watch will have around 92% battery available. Good for a normal day until two hours of bedtime. If I plan on a battery draining day or have a track record of such, easy to top watch battery off in morning while getting ready for work. Takes just a few minutes to get it up to 100% and I am off for the day until 8 or 9 at night. The bonus of this approach, the Apple Watch useage greater then advertised. Around 22 hours per day doing the charging as above. The reason, not charging the Apple Watch for 8 hours while sleeping. In my case no more then two hours per day and typically only one and a half hours.

Simple approach for sleep tracking until Apple gets the battery to last longer.

Sleep tracking has been a game changer for me. Perhaps it's a useless feature for some people, but for those of us who have sleep disorders, sleep tracking wearables help us figure things out.
Honestly probably useful for as many people as EKGs.
 
Great idea / function. hope this will be hardware independent so previous gen can benefit. Tracking quality of sleep is significant as we spend a lot of time sleeping. Tracking sleep disruption factors like lights, sounds, sleeping positions, snoring , apnoea can all add to ones health being? Maybe even call emergency in the event of an emergency !
 
So then when are you supposed to charge that thing if not at night?
Anytime you're not wearing it. Perhaps after you wake up in the morning. It only take a few minutes to top off the battery. You can put it on the charger while you shower and dress.

If the Series 5 battery can last 2 full days then sleep tracking can be useful, but if it don't then just forget about it...
Why? I use it every night as a sleep tracker. I charge it at work for an hour and it’s at 100%.

At work? It takes an hour to charge after wearing it all day, using music at gym for an hour or two, then as a sleep tracker. End at about 60% and charge it for an hour at work and I’m at 100%.

While I think this would be fun, I wouldn't put much faith in it. My watch can't seem to track me when I'm awake, let alone asleep. Half way across a trans-Atlantic flight it congratulated me on achieving my Move goal...

Love my watch, but the health features aren't the reason why.
 
I’ve been tracking my sleep with my Apple Watch since they were released. I charge my watch while I read in bed before I go to sleep each night, and if it is below 90% in the morning, I also charge it while I shower and get ready for the day. I’ve never run out of battery.

It is one thing to to tell my doctor that I don’t sleep well at night, its another thing entirely to show him a history of me sleeping less than 4 hours a night on average. Having actual data to backup your claims is useful for people that have issues.

For those who don’t see the value, don’t use it? Why sit here and complain about it? For those of us that see the value, this is a great addition.

Awesome! I've been holding off on getting an Apple Watch. Sleep tracking along with enough battery power to do it are the exact features I've been waiting for.

I've been using an app called Pillow now for months, and I have just gotten used to charging my watch before I go to sleep. It's a small hassle, but it's worth it.

Never much understood the point of sleep tracking. I’m asleep when I’m not awake. Seems to have worked out for me pretty well.
People like to micromanage things thinking it will help when there are actual moves you can take to make sure you have quality sleep and no tracking is needed. You don't need a sleep tracker to try and go sleep at different times. Useless for anyone with a brain.

Yeah - you wake up tired as ****, but you need a $600 device to tell you you sleep terribly. As if you needed that.

Then you go to the doctor's and they tell you to sleep in that room with $500K+ in sleep monitoring equipment anyway.

But some people here have said I'm "narrow minded" for thinking this is the most pointless thing in the realm of pointless things.

No need to fret. Just ignore. If they're lucky, they'll live long enough to understand how much they didn't know.

It's pretty bizarre that there are people who think they're experts in everything to the point of giving health advice to strangers without knowing anything more about them than their screen name. The Dunning-Kruger effect is strong.

It is pointless. With the number of pills Americans take diet choices and stress sleep tracking is just nonsense. As I said before, first you need to fix your diet, be active (closing rings doesn't count it is *********), no sugar, no pills and avoid stress as much as possible. If you can solve that you will sleep like a baby. If you can't sleep properly after that then you have a more serious underlying problem which your tracker won't solve anyway and you need to go to a hospital get proper professional help.

not all everyone is in the same health position you are fortunate enough to.

I like to know my sleep. it's not as simple as "just work out". did you know, that if I get my heart rate above 120bpm I black out?

your very argument is "I DON'T NEED A SLEEP TRACKER SO NOBODY ELSE DOES!". this is not a tenable argument to take considering there are 7 billion people in this world and it's innevitable that many of them aren't going to have the same health and life that you do.

I also take No pills. have very little sugar, watch my diet.

I use mine for tracking sleep with the SleepWatch app. Works fairly well and doesn’t use much battery. I only charge mine every other day.
Those apps are not very good though. I think they mostly fake the data as they really do not have access to almost any information from the Watch and they cannot run on background. Keeping the app open on the other hand (so the app can use mic/gyro) will use around 70% of battery life.
 
If only they’d make it so Apple Watch would track my gluten exposure, warn me if there are any blue light wavelengths nearby, and remind me to drink water once an hour...

Agreed. There are some nights that I’m not really sure if I’ve slept a lot or not but the hours seem to have passed.

True. And if you can’t tell if you sleep enough or not, because you feel perfectly normal and there are no side effects or any other way to tell, it’s very important that you engage technology to tell you.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy a watch for sleep tracking but it would be nice to know the quality of sleep you’re getting.
