No one knows. If there is an update then it might be 4K. The current Apple TV is great and will perform well for a long time. Specs are not really an issue beyond the omission of 4k
In terms of gaming, I kinda disagree with you. An updated AppleTV with a state of the art A10X chip would do a lot to boost gaming on AppleTV.

I think some of us expected the years of waiting and neglect to be justified by something more momentous than a lighty-up bar and a fingerprint scanner. Padding the Mac presentation with an app is a sign of something going badly wrong somewhere.
This is just a rumor about AppleTV. They won't talk about ATV unless there's more than an app.

If they really want to pad the event, they need to demo some new software which they probably will do. Just hope it's new stuff for laptops and desktops to show off new hardware.

Also known as advertisements.
This. So much this. I have said on many occasions that Apple's Marketing team (AM) is pretty damn brilliant. I imagine their meeting with Network Programmers (NP) went something like this:

NP: "We need a way to advertise our new shows. Research shows people dislike ads but we need ads to get consumers to watch our programming. We need the ads to be targeted to the right consumers."

AM: "That shouldn't be a problem. First, we're going to shift the paradigm with a strategic nomenclature deletion. We will no longer mention the words ads, advertising, targeted, tracked, or data."

NP: {confused} "Ooooookaaay, but how do we get our ad-"

AM: "Shhhhhhhhhhhh! {touches finger to programmers lips} Be calm. We're still going to show you're ads, they're still going to be targeted, and we will still track the data and measure the uptake. We're just going to not mention all those things. Remember the nomenclature. We're going to call it... the Magic List of Courage that Doesn't Explode or Catch Fire and Burn Down Your House, Car, or an Airplane, with Siri... or MLCDECFBDYHCAwS for short."

NP: {slackjawed} "Oh my god! You guy are geniuses. Where do we sign?"

AM: "About that... that bag of money you brought... you're gonna need to bring another"

Well when the Apple TV 5th gen comes out that might be great, not buying a unit this long in the tooth though. Apple really needs to rethink their hardware refresh rates.

They've never had an event under 90 minutes. Did you really want to watch 10 new videos about the new Magic Bar™?
if all they have to show for the Mac is that stupid bar I'm done buying apple products and will start migrating to another platform.

There is not a single smart TV on this planet that is able to do everything the Apple TV can. I bought a top of the line smart TV last year and by now it isn´t updated anymore and services are shutting down as the support dies. My smart TV has grown dumber by the month and it wasn´t that smart to begin with.
Really, because my Sony Smart TV can stream 4k Netflix videos... can't do that on my AppleTV.

If they aren't going to revolutionize how I subscribe to TV, can they at least give me a consolidated guide of all the live TV I am subscribed to already?

While you're at it, allow Plex access to universal search.

Tim Cook is going to speak approximately 30 to 45 minutes on this new app, almost guaranteed.
You forget they'll show the three New ads they've made for it

Prepare to get underwhelmed again and all be good

Interesting. I wonder when they're going to really knock ATV and tvOS out of the park. It doesn't really do anything that's too amazing, yet...
You will eventually get your wish. Once content creators and distributors finally embrace direct streaming (and naturally have found a way to expand, or at the very least not erode their revenue streams), we will finally have the revolution in content consumption that's long overdue and that so many have been clamoring for.

And when, not if, that materializes, devices like the AppleTv will really take off, replacing those clunky set-top distributor-provided boxes we currently use, and become our default 'windows' to the massive amount of content, both old and new, that's out there. The AppleTv will finally vault out of that 'hobby' category.

What those currently controlling that content will 'lose' in monthly fees, they will more than make up for in vastly increased volumes. And they'll still have the option to sell commercial-free or even ad-sponsored packages aimed at budget-minded consumers.

All in all, I'm convinced it won't cost us any less for similar access, but we'll at least have access to increased choices and tailored options.

Well, Tim's gotta show something Apple TV since AT&T just announced DirectTV Now for $35. Making it the 3rd company (out of a potential field of 6 by mid 2017) to lock down streaming TV deals where Apple (cough, Eddy Cue, cough) couldn't. Sad.

How about Microsoft announcing a professional computer today (Surface Studio) to fill a void in the market that Apple has been ignoring? Even more sad.

Apple, nobody cares about this. EVERYONE, however, cares about a new Mac Pro.
We also care that the new MBP has the ports we need: (HDMI, SD card reader, headphone jack).
If you focus on what customers WANT, you'll be more profitable. It's that simple.
I don't care about the Mac Pro. It's overkill for what I need.

If they focus on what I want, they won't mention the Mac Pro ever again. And they know that, on some level.

Hmmmm, AT&T owns DirecTV, no ‘locking’ required.

Dreadful. Programme discovery should be baked into the OS.

Wasn't Tony Soprano on stage somewhere recently saying how content discovery on TV's is crap and how great the aTV is and then they go and come out with this?

Earth calling Apple...

Actually, wrong...

I'm talking locking down content providers for the service and not the service itself.

Which, by the way, AT&T via the merger with Time Warner gets them of HBO, CBS, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, CNN, Turner Classic Movies and more. Locking in their access at a cheaper price because of ownership.

So, thanks for playing.

I'm hearing a lot of complaining in this thread, but:

This app is the next step towards getting the shows out of their silos in separate apps. First was universal search. Now you'll have universal browse. Over time, you won't care what channel or app the show comes from, you'll just watch what you want to watch.
This too can be considered a complaint or... lol

AT&T can because they already are a content provider (DIRECTV) Apple should focus on offering original content like Amazon, Hulu and Netflix.

I agree with you on the universal browse as a logical extension of universal search, but not on the "just watch what you want to watch" part if you mean we won't even go into the source apps anymore. Having a universal browse "portal" app into the individual apps makes sense, but letting the portal app fully replace the individual app doesn't rhyme with the way Apple introduced tvOS - "the future of TV is apps". Pretty sure the developers would revolt if Apple did this.

From a commercial standpoint, imagine if I have an HBO app and a Disney app both on my AppleTV, and then tvOS takes the content from those apps into a centralised WatchList app so that I never have to jump into the individual apps anymore. Sounds good as a consumer, but it takes away any incentive for Disney / HBO to develop a good app, and many opportunities for them to monetise their content through any revenue model other than subscriptions.

I don't think people generally mind cross-promotion of shows and movies. I haven't read any complaints from HBO users about the 1 minute ad for another HBO show before each episode, nor any complaints from Netflix users about the "other shows you might like" sections. At least none of those complaints related to the fact they are technically ads.

I think the ads people don't like are the kind that interrupt programming, the kind that are repetitive, or the kind that try to sell more stuff rather than trying to get the user to watch more stuff.

For example:
Bad: Interrupting a kids show to sell toys.
Good: After a kids show, showing a preview of another similar kids show.
Bad: Showing the same ad 3 times during one episode of a show.
Good: Showing ads to various other similar shows before every episode of a tv show.
Bad: Beer ads during a movie.
Good: Ads for another similar movie shown before a movie starts.
