Very vague report, which of course is just being interpreted as "advertising" by everyone here who has nothing else to go on.

I am choosing to interpret it as a "Guide" of some sort that adds a visual navigation element to the Siri-powered universal search.

if all they have to show for the Mac is that stupid bar I'm done buying apple products and will start migrating to another platform.

Really, because my Sony Smart TV can stream 4k Netflix videos... can't do that on my AppleTV.
Yeah thats a pretty terrible response to the post you replied too. Almost no one cares about 4k Netflix.

There will come a time, in the distant future, where virtually all content we consume from all sources is in 4k or better, just like today, where virtually all content we consume from all sources is in 1080p.

The secret that people like you seem to be not in on...most people do not care about 4k. 1080p is a great experience. 4k is better. But most people are understandably not in any hurry to do better than great.

I think the ads people don't like are the kind that interrupt programming, the kind that are repetitive, or the kind that try to sell more stuff rather than trying to get the user to watch more stuff.

For example:
Bad: Interrupting a kids show to sell toys.
Good: After a kids show, showing a preview of another similar kids show.

Ads for more tv shows don't bring in any outside revenue though. At some point, some real money has to flow into the system so that directors & actors can get paid. That has to come from either subscriptions, advertising for paid products, or merchandising & product placement. You can't pay for free shows with advertisement for more free shows.

You could do something like showing season 1 for free, with ads for the subscription-only season 2. But whether or not that's a viable business model depends on how many people would pony up the cash for the latest content. In the case of kid shows, most parents would just let the kid watch the old episodes, so ads for toys are the logical way to go.

I don't think people generally mind cross-promotion of shows and movies. I haven't read any complaints from HBO users about the 1 minute ad for another HBO show before each episode, nor any complaints from Netflix users about the "other shows you might like" sections. At least none of those complaints related to the fact they are technically ads.

Bad: Showing the same ad 3 times during one episode of a show.
Good: Showing ads to various other similar shows before every episode of a tv show.
Bad: Beer ads during a movie.
Good: Ads for another similar movie shown before a movie starts.
Good points that I generally agree with but it ignores the virulent generalizations that permeate these threads. Be honest with yourself. On this forum ads are bad. No one here ever (a bit of hyperbole on my behalf) has any nuance in their detestation regarding ads. To be fair, part of that ad hate stems from Google's success with advertising and Apple's failure with it.

Magic list. If it operates like Netflix's "other shows you might like" then I see no issues with it. That requires active interaction. If it's passive like traditional ads, just no. We don't know how the program will work so it's useless to speculate. What we do know? It's an ad platform. It provides targeted ads. Customer data must be obtained for it to work. Personally, that doesn't bother me one bit.

I still like my apple tv4 but I would like the idea of a guide instead of switching between apps. I also need access to my UV collection in vudu for most of the movies I have on digital. When I read up on 4k/hdr there still seem to be alot of issues with the services connecting properly to display the proper resolution, maybe apple needs to sit a little bit longer until that gets perfected for an apple tv 5.

Who said anything about free? I pay Netflix $10/month, Hulu $12/month, and HBO $15/month. After tax, that is ~$30/month for TV shows and movies without traditional commercials. I choose to pay for these services and not others precisely because they give me the option of having no ads.

If they can't cover the cost of running the service from the subscription fees, then either find ways to lower costs or raise prices.

As far as I can see, there is very little truly free content on the AppleTV. All of it either requires a subscription, or a cable login. The few ad-supported content apps tend to be more you-tube style.

I have wanted some way to manage which shows I like, to be notified when new episodes are available or when new seasons begin and end, and provide quick-links to the appropriate services app. If this allegedly new app does these things, and also happens to recommend other shows, I think that would be perfect.

I hate ads in general, and I am one of those on this forum that always argues against ad-supported services. However, I think it is possible to have ads that are not bad. The way HBO does it, for example, is really not bad.

If this is a playlist, like I can basically reinvent my version of must see tv with unbreakable kimmy schmidt at 8, walking dead at 830 and westworld at 930? That'd be cool. Could t recommend like a walking dead season 6 marathon ahead of s7? That'd be neat. This could be kinda cool tbh

So it's just a recommendation list, welcome to the modern age Apple.. everyone else seems to already be doing this.
I really fail to see why this is news? Seems like tomorrow's event will be a let down bar the laptops, and that really depends on their hardware and what's offers for the cost.

Well, Tim's gotta show something Apple TV since AT&T just announced DirectTV Now for $35. Making it the 3rd company (out of a potential field of 6 by mid 2017) to lock down streaming TV deals where Apple (cough, Eddy Cue, cough) couldn't. Sad.

How about Microsoft announcing a professional computer today (Surface Studio) to fill a void in the market that Apple has been ignoring? Even more sad.

Everyone is showing the future and the future looks tempting. As a graphic designer I'm tempted to take a look at the surface studio. I'm sooooo close to turn my back on Apple and never look back. Their profits don't make an excuse for their overpriced aging outdated products. It's pure arrogance and greed.

I'm also getting tired from all the comments of people telling they stole the ideas from Apple or copied them. That's sooo 2012. Everyone is putting Apple to shame these days and I know why Apple won't release any new iMacs tomorrow... they go back to the drawing board or they got stuck in the pipeline.

Great! There has been a gaping hole in my heart and this ought nicely fill the void. I was worried Apple might come out with something utterly useless, like a computer with user expandable storage bays, or a desktop with current specs. Thanks goodness!
Unfortunately Steve jobs is actually really dead. With his passing Apple was left with innovative personnel who had filled out their job applications with "I am capable of" written numerous times throughout the application. Now, without Steve there to hold their hands, they are left scrambling throughout the Apple facilities looking for lost notes and scribbles that might have been squirreled away by Steve Jobs. When the last of his ideas are attempted/applied feebly, then you will just see more hype and just more add on's to existing applications and services. Get it?

I don't care about the Mac Pro. It's overkill for what I need.

If they focus on what I want, they won't mention the Mac Pro ever again. And they know that, on some level.
Apple will never focus on what you want. Money is their primary focus and by having lots of it they've become lazy and arrogant and totally out of touch with customers.

hmmm, might there be new ATVs this fall??? I would have expected next spring, but, they did drop the ATV3, which means no lower cost option, so, maybe:

ATV5 128GB (A10?) $199
ATV5 64GB (A10?) $149
ATV4 32 GB drops to $89? (prob. $99)

more interested in new Macs right now though.

what happened the unified app that will allow you to log in once to all your channels?

Apple plans to announce a new app that will help viewers discover TV shows at its "Hello Again" media event tomorrow, according to Dawn Chmielewski for USA Today.

The app, dubbed "The Watch List" internally but expected to have a different name, will reportedly recommend TV shows based on the content users access through their Apple TVs.

For example, an FX Networks subscriber might receive a recommendation to watch the new dramatic series Atlanta. The report suggests an Apple TV focus, but it does not specifically mention if the app will be for iOS, tvOS, or both platforms.

Apple's "Hello Again" event kicks off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Thursday at its Cupertino, California headquarters.

That's what people say when Apple doesn't focus on their particular favorites.

My point was that ALL Apple customers don't want the same things, so Apple can never focus on what ALL Apple customers want. It isn't possible. Even customers who want more bands for the Apple watch don't get what they want.

If you want Apple to update the iPod Nano, you're probably going to be disappointed tomorrow. If you want it badly, you're going to be very disappointed.

Well it seems to me that Apple isn't just focusing on what some of their customers want, they aren't focusing on anything any of their customers want. Instead they are trying to tell us what we want and hoping that eventually they will be right and we will buy their stuff in droves again like we did the iPod and iPhone. There was a time when I owned practically every product they made. As soon as they announced it, I wanted it!! I don't remember the last time that actually happened.

I was slightly intrigued by the iPad Pro, and I bought it hoping they would have done more with it by now. Sadly, that hasn't happened and I now sort of regret buying it instead of buying a Surface Pro.

Ughhh. Boring. I hope this doesn't soak up too much oxygen at tomorrows event. The event announcement strongly inferred it would be about Macs.

This is how Apple has always operated. Steve Jobs didn't poll users to find out what they wanted. He did what he thought was right, and expected users to decide whether it was for them. That was all well and good when what Apple wanted lined up with what you personally wanted, but there have always been people who didn't like Steve Jobs cavalier attitude towards Apple customers' wish lists.

Now that what they're doing is no longer aligned with you, you're one of those whose wish list isn't on the list of what Apple thinks is the right thing to do. Just like those who didn't like what Steve Jobs was doing.

Everyone cares for a new Mac Pro? Get a hold of yourself... The Mac Pro is a professional-only product, your estimates are far off. But yeah, a Mac event should rather focus on Mac mini and Mac Pro instead of apps to the Apple TV..

Yeah, an ad implying new macs, gets sidelined by another consumer service, and I will f#%king throw sh#t if they make any reference to the painfully bad Apple watch.

As a professional, I make purchase recommendations. At this point in no way can I recommend any Mac products, including the new MBP for developers and content creators due to the sheer lack of workstation class CPUs for compiling and the lack of CUDA support for digital art assets.

Professionals were the majority of Mac customers less then a decade ago. Now? There's more f#%king store real estate devoted to watch bands and zero presence of the Mac Pro or anything resembling a computer.

At this point my company ordered extra old MBP models new from Apple as backups for the stuborn that refuse to embrace modern hardware running on Win10AE or Linux.

As a huge supporter of Apple and "The" in-house Mac Guru for a large organization, almost everyone I work with is shaking their heads in disbelief of how "The Cook" is burning Apple and its former core audience. Some still hold belief that Apple will make a come back and support professionals. I don't believe Apple will until "The Cook" is fired. I'd love to be wrong, and will eat my hat if Apple releases an updated Mac Pro with pci-e expansion bays and CUDA support options.
