No Touch Bar ... I still have my money on full touch screen on the Pros
Didn't Apple already say they wouldn't ever make macbooks touch screen?

Kinda like how they won't merge macOS to the iPad, no?

There’s not a single thing that USB-A does better than USB-C. It is simply a superior port in every way.

Your argument boils down to a desire to hold back the advancement of technology because you don’t want to buy a $4 adapter for your USB mouse.

The quicker PC manufacturers dump crappy USB-A ports, the quicker we’ll have ubiquitous USB-C peripherals.

Please re-read my posts. “Function” for many users does not always = “fastest data transfer” and/or “most flexible-use ports.”

My argument boils down to wanting a laptop to be as all-in-one as possible. No dongles needed. Just walk up to most any of the ubiquitous devices out there (whether I own them or not) and use the readily-available cable nearby. Not have to pocket a collection of cables, adapters, dongles.

I can ask you, why don’t you just buy a desktop and monitor and keyboard and mouse if you want the ultimate “superiority” of not only ports but screen, processor, storage size, etc? Give me a break.

Meanwhile, apologies to everyone out there since I myself am holding back the advancement of technology. Pardon moi…

Honestly, what apple really needs to announce is a display for the mainstream. It’s crazy we hook our beautiful Mac laptops up to crappy plastic dells or Samsung. Amd the lg partnership was a bust.

(that, and a proper OS for the iPad.)
I still have a Thunderbolt Display and it is incredible. If they came out with a new $1k display I’d grab two.

By the time they announce the new 16" MBP and the new iMac 27'', how much time would it take for them to take it to the market ?
Is there any leak for the pricing ?

There is really too many platforms to cover these days in WWDC. Covering iOS, iPad OS, Mac OS, Watch OS and TV OS, then having time to cover 2 completely new products that uses is new chip that has not been revealed. I just don’t see that happening.

I'm not seeing your perspective here. This isn't some rando mishmash of tangential topics. It sounds like you're confusing WWDC with a general public event because of hardware announcements.

Code for all of the above platforms is written in Swift using Xcode. Certain developers predominantly work with features from one OS or the other. And even between each OS, a substantial number of libraries are shared. Once you know one, you kind of know the other; that's intentional. Apple's driving purpose for releasing hardware at the event is because Apple often wants tight coupling with software as close to public release as possible. They introduce new software components (SDKs… if you've ever heard of things like ARKit, CloudKit, etc.) at WWDC.

Has anyone heard rumors of whether updated machines will support more than one external display? That is one of the major hindrances to my moving from my Intel MBP.

So a bunch of ports I don’t need...

Losing the super cool touchbar.

Hmm... I am definitely the minority on the features I want on the pro notebook. All I want is the current version with more battery and more power. M1+ should solve those issues.
I was considering getting the 14" but, like you, I don't need the extra ports as I already have a OWC Thunderbolt Dock. I am still looking forward to seeing it, though.

I do like the idea of MagSafe making a return.

What are you doing day to day that requires more power than what the M1 currently offers?

apple is missing the boat here! Should be a 13” 15” and 18” MBP and there should be a 13” 15” and 18” MacBookAir! airs can stay a new cycle of tech behind for cost saving! We’ve got the iMac air 24” now we need iMac Pro’s in 28” and 34”! an Apple 8k screen for the mini, thinking 60”! And they should all come in the current colors of the iMac plus silver and space gray

I don't know much about displays, but is the selection really that horrible out there?

When your laptop is capable of lasting all day, people don‘t find themselves camping besides power outlets as much. People don’t complain about their iPads not getting magsafe, and with M1, I would argue there is even less of a need for magsafe now.

iPads are used in hands, a lot of people use their laptops wired. iPads are made to use power sparingly, laptops are meant to maximize the power of the hardware. People keep their laptops on for hours downloading or encoding or encrypting or compiling... No one keeps their iPads on for hours doing so.

The use case is different. Either way, I wish iPads and iPhones had magsafe, easier to connect and I had my share of falling ipads and iphones.

I really hope that SD Card and HDMI won’t have a comeback to the MacBook Pro. Even as a photographer I am not using SD Cards anymore but CFExpress instead. And I‘d rather have an additional Thunderbolt 4 port instead of an HDMI connector. Not so sure about the Magsafe, but as long as I can still charge via Thunder I’d be fine with it.

So you want a CFExpress port instead? Why use that over SD anyway?

My experience led me to doing the Snoopy dance when they left the building. Crappiest display Apple made in the modern era (2000-present). Buggy USB ports all the time, even with Apple keyboards, turn and off on their own at times, spotty Ethernet port, just a garbage display with horrible reflectivity. All that and a $1000 to boot. Could not get those things out of the office soon enough. YMMV.

Apple doesn’t play “Throw sh*t against the dart board and let’s see what sticks!”, but thanks for playing, better luck next time.

You know you'll use four USB-C ports?

I've never seen anyone do that. They either use one for power and the other for an adapter, or they just use a single port, with a dock/hub.

Not impossible.

There in like a philosophical disagreement and a rift that will never be bridged. Single function ports I never used with my 2012 and 2015 MBPs (HDMI, SD Card) can easily be replicated by a dock or a dongle or a cable. That sort of Swiss Army Knife flexibility can be built in at manufacturing time. Those single use ports being there in the production model can never be taken out and rob users of the most potential for growth and reconfiguration as their system ages. I understand your argument, but I am diametrically opposed to it as it makes zero sense from a long term use of the system. Apple made the right call ditching USB-A, HDMI, SD and MagSafe back in 2016. Regressing back to the 2015 set of ports (if it happens) simply shows there is a tug of war inside Apple as well. You and I both know which sides were rooting for to win. We’ll see how it shakes out very soon.

In 5 years of owning a 2016” MBP I’ve never used more than three usb-c ports at once. I have, however, had do use sd card readers hundreds of times, usb-a to usb-c adapters hundreds of times, and HDMI adapters dozens of times. And, more than once, I haven’t had the necessary dongle around when I needed it (a problem ”solved” eventually by carrying a large pouch full of adapters everywhere my computer goes).

I will not feel “robbed” if apple adds back SD and adds HDMI. I will feel blessed.

In a sense, it kinda reminds me of the thunderbolt ports in the 2011 MBA. That one port gave me the flexibility of being able to connect to VGA, HDMI or DVI displays without the need for 3 separate ports, at a time when all 3 were still used fairly commonly, and the thunderbolt port also took up way less space than any one of the three, which in turn allowed the MBA to be kept as slim as it was.

While it meant having to carry 1-2 adaptors around with me, it also meant that when I didn't need to connect to a display, I benefited from a slimmer and more portable device.

I agree that there will never really be a solution for everyone. Just whether Apple's eventual design choices benefit you (as the individual user) or not, and how much one is wiling to adapt in the event that it doesn't.

On my 2016 MBP, I typically plug in to left power, left USB-C to my Focusrite 18i8, SSD on the right and eGPU on the last right port. I don’t have it hooked up right now, but that’s a pretty typical workflow for me. Occasionally, I plug in my El Gato TB2 dock instead of storage on the right hand side, for a couple of extra ports.

the invite has a clue as always, the leopard wallpaper is the clue, which came out around 2006 the same time magsafe did on MacBooks i believe, which means new MacBooks with return of magsafe.

I’m convinced only folks suffering from nullumaluphobia are looking new monitors specifically from Apple! There are decent options available at all range of qualities, in this instance.

My wallet is ready. I'm going to be disappointed if its just the current M1 specs in the 14/16" bodies. I need more RAM.

I’ve been a full time iOS developer since 2012. I know what the event is for and I know the libraries. And I know there has been hardware announcements in the past. They did find time to squeeze in Apple silicone last year, but that again was to align developers to it.

May be they will find time for hardware this year. But there are too many platforms and each platform always has it’s key new features and directions every year that deserves a spotlight. So I find it possible but unlikely that there will be hardware announcements at WWDC going forward. Given the number of items that are in rumors including the AirPods and stuff, it will just be better for Apple to organize a 1 hour hardware focused event one week later, so these items will get its due focus by media.
