Touch bar was a failed experiment. Yes some people loved it, but a good number also hated it. If you are a touch typist or use an external keyboard then it is useless. Also if you have a desktop Mac then you have to use separate workflows as Apple only ever made the touch bar for a limited range of Macs (MBP).

Good riddance in my opinion, and glad to see it go. I bought a M1 MBA rather than the Pro version mainly just to avoid paying extra for something that got in my way.
Still no hard evidence that it is going away. I will wait and see if it goes or stays.

Honestly, what apple really needs to announce is a display for the mainstream. It’s crazy we hook our beautiful Mac laptops up to crappy plastic dells or Samsung.

Me too, but how much would you pay for, let's say, exact same monitor that's on the new iMac? The M1 Mac mini is $700, the equivalent iMac is $1500, so the monitor would cost at least 700 and it wouldn't sell because you can get a 4K LG for $300.

Actually, if you use a different browser than Safari, F5 reloads the given tab you're using. I use it all the time. ;)

I am lazy and as one hand is usually on the mouse, I just use Ctrl + click the refresh button. :)

Truth though is I had simply forgotten! I just looked at my keyboard and whilst writing F6, added F5 whilst I noticed there wasn't a MacOS shortcut showing!

Good point. But if the Apple monitor would offer a superior display quality, higher resolution and - because it's an Apple device - a much nicer design, I'm sure, it finds its customer base. But perhaps then the problem is, that it's coming too close to the XDR display and threatens this profitable business.

Mine has crashed exactly one time on me in more than a year of everyday usage. What advantage does the MacBook Pro have over the air and over Windows laptops without the touch bar?
You’re wasting your breath arguing with the retro MacBook Pro crowd. The pinnacle for them was the 2015 model and they just want that back, single use ports, single function Fn keys and all. The advantages of 4 TB3/USB-C ports and the Touch Bar are completely lost on them. I’ve been reading these comments for the past 5 years (since the 2015 MacBook) and the whining has never ceased. I figured we would lose more of them when Apple announced the Apple Silicon transition, but here they are. This would be less of an issue if Apple hadn’t screwed the pooch with the butterfly keyboard, had shown more of a commitment to ongoing improvements to the Touch Bar (including a wired keyboard with a Touch Bar and backlit keys) and released a Thunderbolt 3 Display with legacy ports to shut people up. However, this is the same Apple that discontinued AirPort and left it’s users to fend for themselves with the NetGear’s and Linksys’s of the world, so I don’t hold that much hope anymore.

Expect it would because it would be Apple branded.

All this hoopla over nothing. Who knows what will or won’t happen when it does in a few days we’ll all know and can cheer & jeer then. Anyone still talking about air tags?

I get how Mac users get so excited just over the return of dedicated HDMI port and SD card slot. I hate dongles myself. But I wonder how many would prefer four usb4 ports instead of possibly only two.

Not true. Take for instance the canon eos R5, it has an sd slot.
Correct, but besides SD it also supports SDHC/SDXC and UHS-II. Will a MBP SD card slot also support this? And as far as I know, 8K or 4K slow motion recording with the EOS R5 requires CFExpress, because SD is too slow.

The amount of megapixels and bit depth modern professional cameras are offering is getting larger at ever increasing speed - think of 8K movie recording as an example. SD cards are foreseeable not capable of handling this huge amount of data in adequate time. That's why CFExpress was invented. If a have a MacBook PRO, I could also ask for a CFExpress card slot as well. So we have a SD card slot, a CFExpress card slot and maybe also it's successor on the Mac? This clearly looks terrible! If I would have the choice between any type of card slot and an additional Thunderbolt 4 port, I definitely would choose the TB4 port - no question. It's much more future-proof.
The flip side is that many more devices use SD Card than CF Express. I have two Zoom Sound Recorders (H1 and H6) and a trail cam that use SD or Micro SD and while having the SD slot is convenient (on my old 2011 MBP), it is still a waste of space in 2021 and I’d much rather have a Thunderbolt 3 port than SD or HDMI, but I digress. Only more week and we’ll know if Apple has regressed 6 years of development to appease the wine and cheese crowd.

How would you explain the Magsafe charger in the new iMac?

As I spend more time mulling over this point, I have a theory that all the design decisions behind the M1 iMac went into allowing it to be as slim as it is.

The headphone jack is shifted to the side because it’s not thick enough to house one.

Likewise, I suspect it went with all usb c ports because the frame isn’t thick enough for usb A ports either.

My new theory is that they also went with the MagSafe power cable because again, the form factor isn’t thick enough to house a conventional power plug either.

MagSafe for the 16” MBP may make sense if it is required to deliver power beyond what usb c is currently capable of supplying. But it won’t be because people are still tripping over cables, which should be an increasingly less common occurrence due to the improved battery life offered by the M1 chip.

That’s my best guess currently.

Not saying that no one is still using SD, but for me it would be a wasted port and dust collector that meanwhile most Mac users will already have as an adapter.
I'd like SD card reader integrated into the laptop, rather than having to carry around ( another ) dongle.

MacRumors continues to misquote the Bloomberg article. Mark Gurman wrote “as soon as early this summer” (WWDC) – that is not the same thing as “as early as this summer” (could mean September). Announcement on Monday, possibly shipping in a month.
There are plenty of other sources too. Like the production timeline. That says July.

Yeah, I would rather have 4 of the same ports I KNOW I'll use than only two, plus HDMI and SD that I already know I won't use. I'll buy the dongle if I need it.

I don't understand people's hatred for the adapters/dongles. You attach them to the end of the peripheral device once and never touch them again. They effectively become a small extension cord. Are they ugly? Sure. But I really don't care - I didn't buy my Mac to enter beauty contests, I bought it to get work done and watch horribly overrated television shows! ;)

If the rumors for the 14/16 MBPs are true then it will be nice to have the magsafe and SD card slot. Yes the SD slot isn't quick but CF Express is probably too big to fit in the chassis. Still useful considering the majority of consumer/pro cameras still use SD and some people may want the slot for a nifty minidrive type adaptor.

I would say the least useful connector to bring back is HDMI as I wouldn't be surprised if most people with a MBP don't use it. If you really need it you can get an adaptor. Even one USB A port would probably be more useful or better another Thunderbolt/Type-C port.

Yeah, I would rather have 4 of the same ports I KNOW I'll use
You know you'll use four USB-C ports?

I've never seen anyone do that. They either use one for power and the other for an adapter, or they just use a single port, with a dock/hub.
