I have an M1 mini for home office and an M1 air for travel. Nothing announced is going to be for me, but I am excited for the announcement nonetheless and happy for all those who have been waiting for a pro level machine.

Any idea how much these are likely to cost?
Probably the same as before: 14-inch starts at $1799 with 16 Gigs of RAM and 512 Gigs of SSD.

16-inch starts at $2399 with the same config.

The 16-inch might start at $1999 again, if they do a configuration without discrete graphics, or if all of those no longer have discrete graphics.

It would be awesome if Apple offered custom port options, where a person could pick which ports they wanted. :D Wishful thinking I know.

I hope that SD card slot does come back. That would make a new Nifty Minidrive-like cheap and semi permanent storage expansion possible again.

That isn't really a pro machine need though is it? Putting in a exceedingly slow and unreliable card into a machine as a storage expansion is very counter to the shift in workloads requiring very high speed SSD's.

Although the new design will undoubtedly look good, I’m glad I went with my 16GB M1 MacBook Air. For $1079 it was a steal for what you get. I imagine these new Pro models will be very expensive.

My own take, based on nothing in particular: tease next week, release in the fall.

While I’m not in the market for these machines as my M1 MBA and Mini are fabulous machines, personally I could never ever go back to a macbook with a fan of any kind. The MBA has been an awesome experience. I’d rather be throttled than deal with that damn fan noise.

I am currently waiting to see what the new MacBook Pro brings to the table, don’t mind fans as they apparently barely kick in with the M series chips, you have to really push them….

I am hoping for a 1080p camera, no Touch Bar, redesign, obviously it will come with better performance, more ports.

The only things that puts me off the Air at the moment is the 720p camera and the 400 nits screen… the current M1 MacBook Pro just seems a bit pointless at this point and the Touch Bar really puts me off it (due to it probably not being supported for much longer).

99% percent of cameras still come with SD cards. SD cards are not going away. Apple probably did their research.

oh and I use SD. I bet a lot more people use SD than CFExpress.

Percentage of overall cameras is not the same as professional cameras for a professional editing machine. All the full frame cameras are CF, CFast, XQD, or now CF Express. Their are a few outliners like the odd medium format that takes one frame a minute/hour and doesn't need speed. But the general trend has been the moving from CF, CFast, and XQD to CF Express A or B.

The floppy isn't going away. The CD isn't going away. Technology will stop evolving because I like what we already got.
The only thing that will stop evolving, is your ability to understand the concept of the future. In the future everything changes.

Even the [standalone] cameras themselves are going away. They are being replaced with iPhones, or haven't you noticed what's been happening the last 10 years? This evolution is not going to stop. Only a matter of time. Right now you will reject the idea because you resist change, but once everyone around you has adopted it, you will consider it normal and start complaining about the next thing on the way.

It's not technology that isn't evolving, it's ignorance that isn't evolving.
In high quality photography either on the professional or semi-professional level, smartphones don't play a role and will not in the future - due to physical laws man (thankfully) cannot change. So cameras will never be replaced (completely) by smartphones. Just take a look at the rapid technology developments in the higher end DSLR/DSLM cameras in the last years (still and video shooting). Sure, the number of "pictures" - I would not call them photos due to their bad quality - taken with smartphones has increased tremendously. But this is coming from a majority of people who sacrifice image quality for increased convenience. At best, smartphone pictures look halfway okay on their little phone screens. Look at them on your 4k TV and you are shocked. The same effect can be observed when listing to music: The majority of people uses mp3 which is far behind the audio quality of a record player used in the past (192 kHz, 24 bit - HighRes audio today) - because it's more convenient. I don't condemn this development. Everybody is free to choose whatever he wants and that's absolutely great. And as long as there is still cutting edge technology available for the ones who are fascinated by the "clear" signal without computerized manipulation, I'm happy for myself. I only would not call smartphone pictures and mp3 an "evolving" technology. In terms of quality, it's a step backwards.

I agree, but the lack of upgrade options after purchase isn't really a pro feature either. For storage at least this has been very helpful for me in the past.

This seems like it'd wreck their sales of the current MacBook Pros though, wouldn't make much sense to me.
Good point. I still think, again, based on nothing at all, that the release won't be right after WWDC.

Question though: I would assume the 13" M1 MBP would be dropped in favor of the 14", or would it remain as a lower-priced M1 alternative?

Lots of professional cameras use sd cards.

I have to disagree. There are four TB3 ports on the machine that you can connect into PB's of storage if you want or your storage will be on the office network. If anything the lack of 1/1/100 Gbps ethernet is a issue, but one easily solved by TB3 again.

Removal of the Touch Bar?????? You kidding right? The Touch Bar is a great feature.

Touch bar was a failed experiment. Yes some people loved it, but a good number also hated it. If you are a touch typist or use an external keyboard then it is useless. Also if you have a desktop Mac then you have to use separate workflows as Apple only ever made the touch bar for a limited range of Macs (MBP).

Good riddance in my opinion, and glad to see it go. I bought a M1 MBA rather than the Pro version mainly just to avoid paying extra for something that got in my way.

Agreed, touch bar was cute, but time for it to go.

Kinda cool that my venerable 2015 13" MBP will be back in vogue, based on the rumors.

Really wish I hadn't bought the 13" 2020 Core i5 MBP 10th Gen Intel with 16GB RAM for £1800 last year.

Watched umpteen youtube reviews and tests to see if it handled 4K in FCPX. Turns out it doesn't, well mine doesnt anyway. Fans go through the roof with a single 4K monitor plugged in and if you want to scrub through 4K footage in FCPX on an external, forget about it.

Plugged my Wife's £800 MBA M1 into the same monitor, no issues at all with FCPX and 4K footage.

May have to cut my losses and upgrade once the 14" comes out.

When your laptop is capable of lasting all day, people don‘t find themselves camping besides power outlets as much. People don’t complain about their iPads not getting magsafe, and with M1, I would argue there is even less of a need for magsafe now.
Capable unless you spend several hours a day on video conference calls. 🙄

I hear ya. I sold my 16" MBP last year. Sell it for what you can.
