Apple lost me as a fan when they went all glossy with their notebooks and iMacs. Until then, I thought Apple could do no wrong. I've owned 20+ Macs over the years.

Now I'm frequently critical of Apple. I made the mistake of buying a glossy MacBook but now I'm a happy netbook owner and liking Windows more all the time. More choices, lower prices, there's nothing wrong with that.

I would gladly pay $50-$100 for a matte option on the rest of the MBP or iMac line.

How quickly can man forget? Matte display used to be the only available option not too long ago. Then came the glossy treatment and people were crazy to pay extra for it. Then it became the only available option, and now people are crazy to pay extra for getting back the good old treatment we've become so used to.

This is like accepting higher price for the same product! No wonder world suffers from financial crisis every now and then if people are so stupid.

Then again, it is Apple (among others) who make the products and thus are creating this issue. Customer is only a part of the problem...

The Macbook Pro's add a layer of Glass on top of the Glossy Display, thus adding for reflections.

No, there is always only one treatment. One of the (current) following three options:

It used to be matte/antiglare, which is still good.
Then the trend favored glossy finish. This treatment sucks big time.
Now there is a glass window attached directly to the panel. This is in fact rather good choice because the glass window adds to the strength of an already thin display. I actually like this added durability a lot.

And after all, under the treatment there's a sucky 6bit TN panel so the display is not good for pro work anyway.

And our prayers have been answered:

The Matte Option Is BACK (at a €45 price tag)! Woohah!

(It is not yet in the US Store, but it is in the Dutch.)

It's only available on the 15" configs... ordering right now ;-)

i never had to pay for choosing a glossy screen with my MacBook Pro Core Duo. i went for the glossy as it seamed 'better'. but MacRumors then made me decide that i should have gone matte… oh well its still good.

And the 13" is still missing matte??!?!?

Grrrr!!!

My ageing 12" G4 Powerbook is still the latest Apple model that is portable and has a matte screen. Where is the upgrade path??

Thank God people at Cupertino have finally discovered how much better matte screen is compared to the glossy finish. Now bring that back on ACD and most pro's will be happy :)

Not in New Zealand,
Meh.

At least we can buy unlocked iPhones legally, straight from Apple. :D

*BTW if people want me to export them I may consider.

Oooooh, evil Apple!

Take a product most people are happy with.
Offer an alternative, which a lot of people don't like to use in sunlight.
Stop offering the original product, sit back and wait for the outrage.
Offer the original product again, at a 45 euro premium.

Now people are hugely grateful to Apple for giving us a feature for 45 euros ,which previously was free.

Grrrr... :p

Ah, a classic matte option. Wait, since when were CRTs matte?

Joking aside, my next purchase was going to be a 17" MBP simply because it had the matte option. With this revelation i will definitely be getting a 15" during the next processor bump.
