How many people do you think it requires to run a data center?

The 300-500 jobs is just the construction. Once complete it's likely there could be 15-30 technical jobs and the rest contracted security/cleaning/facilities management.

Since October when a federal judge struck down Arizona's gay marriage ban, I think companies like Apple are more likely to feel comfortable doing business in this otherwise conservative state.

Yeah, I am really sure that is the reason Apple is doing business in Arizona.

Command center for Apple's global HQ?

Think of it like this...NASA has a command center for space launches in Houston even though the launches may take place in Cape Canaveral, FL...or elsewhere. Apple is building a spaceship campus in Cupertino. The Command Center will be in Mesa, AZ. ;) Following NASA's lead in keeping launch and command sites separate? :D

"Global command center" lol sounds so G.I.Joe

Sounds like they have something in mind for the future!

In other news welcome to Arizona. It's a great place to live. As long as Apple is spending money how about developing a new Mac Pro tower (please)?

Finally we have an exchange rate between USD and minerals.

$2B = 400 Minerals, so $5M/Mineral.

I wonder if they'll choose to upgrade to a Planetary Fortress or an Orbital Command.

So should Apple not do business in states or countries that don't jive with Tim Cook's personal political views? I'm sure there are places less friendly to gays than Arizona that Apple does business in.

Exactly... Apple's presence in Arizona is only about what is in the best interest of the company.

May be some of that but it's my understanding that Apple got some really nice concessions from AZ in order to open the GT plant. They were kinda committed to doing something with the site.

Those concessions may have had a penalty clause if Apple didn't actually follow through and deliver certain things (like number of jobs, tax revenue).

So, Apple may have found it was cheaper to use it for something else. Data centers are relatively easy to deploy anywhere, without a huge disruption of company operations. And Apple seems to have an inexhaustible need for them. :)

I love Apple and all, but... didn't they basically BANKRUPT GT Advanced by not using the sapphire in the latest phone, now they get a discounted company to purchase as a result. Nice hostile Takeover.

Not Quite. GT entered into a contract and was unable to fulfill their end of the bargain. They either vastly over estimated their abilities or (my personal opinion) deliberately set the company up to fail so the CEO, CFO etc. could watch the stock go up and then cash out with a nice retirement before it all came falling down. Either way GT knowingly signed a contract, clearly did not fulfill the contract by not producing material in sufficient quality or quantities, and failed through their own fault.

So no, Apple did not bankrupt GT. GT bankrupted GT. Would you have rather they accepted the material and then had tens of thousands of defective iPhone screens?

Really? Apple doesn't have problems doing business with people who beat women or in countries with terrible human rights records. I seriously doubt a gay marriage ban would stop them.

In all fairness, NASA's command center is in Houston because LBJ (VP at the time) insisted.

Officially, NASA denied this.

Expect apple to move more of their CA operations to AZ little regardless of the spaceship in Cupertino. A company has to be moronic to be based in California with their insane tax rates.

Nope, you're looking at this from the wrong angle. GT shot themselves in the foot by over-promising and under-delivering because of mismanagement. Even in the face of failing to deliver, they could have chosen to continue working with Apple to eventually produce the sapphire, but instead, they threw in the towel and gave up... that was their choice. Apple would've preferred to work with them, as they publicly stated.

This is only a fraction of the jobs promised by the GT plant. A bunch of servers out there in the desert isn't really doing it

Not when a company has customers so infatuated with their products that they won't blink an eye when those taxes are passed on in the form of higher prices.

2 billion in 30 years.. Thats about 60M a year... Why do they call it one of the biggest investments by apple?

Well, yes and no. A command centre is not the same as a data centre. Imagine a huge wall display showing iCloud status in different parts of the world... "uh oh, iCloud is down in [some distant corner of the globe]... let's go to Def Con Red"

You're thinking this is just another data centre, but the article clearly says "command centre".. different beast.

This is about a mile from my house. I wonder how I can apply for a job there :)

Definitely Orbital Command. Apple is doubling down on secrecy, so they gotta keep scanner sweeps going to find and destroy Observers sent over from Samsung's Robotics Facilities.

highly doubt the hundreds of jobs lost to the fall of GTAT are not the same skill set of jobs this new command center will be replacing them with in the area. I just hope those original workers were home owners so their property value goes up and not renters so their rent goes up.

Very interesting story on how NASA came to Houston.

While I don't suspect that politics played a big role in Arizona, it's common to spread the wealth around and build a power base for when corporations need it. This is quite common when Defense programs are spread among as many Congressional districts as possible, assuring support even when programs go off the track.
