Correct

So should Apple not do business in states or countries that don't jive with Tim Cook's personal political views? I'm sure there are places less friendly to gays than Arizona that Apple does business in.

No, Apple should not do business in states that restrict the rights of its citizens.

Dry

Why building a data center at a place with such hot climate...

It's dry and land is cheap. Easier to filter dust out than it is to worry about moisture.

----------

Think of it like this...NASA has a command center for space launches in Houston even though the launches may take place in Cape Canaveral, FL...or elsewhere. Apple is building a spaceship campus in Cupertino. The Command Center will be in Mesa, AZ. ;) Following NASA's lead in keeping launch and command sites separate? :D

The only reason it happened this way was to make come politician happy.

They should call it the Cook's Huge Screw Up building.

----------

Why building a data center at a place with such hot climate...

Because they essentially paid $500 million for it, so they felt they should make some use of it.

lol @ Cook's huge screw up building...

Apple didn't get what they wanted out of GT with agreeing so they decided to just use it for their own purposes anyway...

Yep. that sounds like Tim alright.

Whatever this is, it had better make iMessage work at least 99% of the time.

Well, that's every state.

It was only time before we'd hear about Apple using this place for something ! Who ever thought Apple would NOT utililize the facility doesn't know the Business and the business of Apple!

2 billion is certainly a lot of money for something that Apple didn't really need. It's good that it'll probably bring back some of those jobs lost though.

So no, Apple did not bankrupt GT. GT bankrupted GT. Would you have rather they accepted the material and then had tens of thousands of defective iPhone screens?

I would think it's GT TRIED to bankrupt Apple, but failed utterly.

Build a data center in one of the hottest regions in our country - Where you are at the mercy of massive air conditioning units? Makes no sense unless they are getting another huge tax incentive, which does zero for the environment. Why not look for more areas like Prineville Oregon, where energy is cheap and temperatures are reasonable.

What if I told you that no one in corporate america (and most of america) gives two ***** about faux environmental issues and that corporations only exist to make money for their shareholders?

Lots of sunlight in AZ for cheap solar power. It's almost as competitive with coal now, with prices expected to drop further: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_of_electricity_by_source

Only if you ignore the massive amounts of energy needed to make the panels, the huge amounts of energy needed to put them in place, etc. But then again the carbon tax BS keeps the Climate Change folks beating that junk science.

Business doesn't care about the environment. At least not anymore than they have to to keep the greenies at bay. Of course they are getting tax incentives. Every business does. Of course, us citizens get stuck covering the taxes the business would have paid but we are easy targets. That's for a different thread.

:)

Perhaps your team should do a better job of explaining the benefits of carbon energy to the public? Then, you can control government like we do.

Ultimately, the carbon-energy people will be put out of business and defeated through our slick marketing and campaigning. It is something the non-renewable people are going to find difficult to compete against, as society moves towards more liberalism while eliminating conservatism everywhere.

Expect apple to move more of their CA operations to AZ little regardless of the spaceship in Cupertino. A company has to be moronic to be based in California with their insane tax rates.
Yeah cause the smartest richest company can't see what you see. Seems to work for them.

OMG! It's happening. First the space ship then the command center... :D

Apple moving something this significant out of its historical home of Silicon Valley is just another small sign of Apple losing its core DNA, which I expect will continue under Tim Cook. Apple is still riding on the momentum of Steve Jobs, but at least Jonathan Ive is still there to help keep the design vision focused.

I think they are talking about an operations center. The actual server farms could likely be elsewhere.

Not really. Product engineering continues to be centered in Silicon Valley. An operations center such as this would be prohibitively expensive to run in Silicon Valley. And Apple has never tried to run anything like this out of Silicon Valley, nor would any company.

The conversation probably went more like this:

Person A: Hey we have a big awesome modern facility in AZ, what should we do with it?

Person B: We need a new data center. Lots of sunshine for renewable energy, and short plane ride from cupertino.

Person A: Sounds good.

Tim Cook: Hey I was scrounging around my office couch for some change for the pizza guy when I found $2billion. What should we do with it?

Apple board: We could always use another data center. You can never have too many of those...

Doubt it. Companies in New York and California, etc., justify the price of being there with the obvious benefit of having a large, accessible pool of talented people in the area.

And not for nothing but being in a desirable part of the world does matter a lot in recruiting. Culture, outdoor opportunities, accessibility to public transit or bike commuting; these things do actually matter to a lot of skilled people, especially millennials.

You might expect to see something like this happen with a) a company that's not doing so hot, or b) a company that could care less about employee happiness. Apple is neither one. And really no tech company worth its salt is going to get by if they don't care about employee happiness. A strong focus on happiness is just kind of the norm in this industry, at this point. Outside of hardware manufacturing of course, in *that* sector it would seem employee happiness is definitely not a priority :/

EDIT: Something else to consider especially in regards to Apple. They appear to be quite proud of being a California company. For instance they are naming their operating system versions after places in California...

Apple gave GT a boatload of money to build the sapphire facility.
Failing to follow thru on the agreement, GT really didn't have any money to give back - that's kinda the point of GT collapsing.
So, Apple reasonably takes possession of whatever is left - which was little more than a bunch of highly specialized furnaces and some buildings suitable for repurposing as a $2B data center.
