For all the trolls and whiners on this thread, I have the perfect solution for you!

Use the earbuds that came with your phone! They're tied together and to your phone, so even with all the contact sports you seem to be playing on the subway, you're almost sure not to lose them! Also, there are no batteries to wear out and replace! Also, they were 'free' with your iPhone! Finally, even with all that, if you still manage to lose them, smash them, or your barber accidentally snips one loose, you can get them replaced for only $29!

Problem solved.

Yeah, but but but... What if I'm ripping Oak boards on my table saw, and the cord gets snagged on the blade, hurling my ear pods backwards into the wall behind me at 110 miles per hour. And I only have a $20 bill in my wallet. THEN WHAT?

Hopefully one of the 3rd party accessory makers will come out with a wire that attaches the EarPods to your iphone so if they fall out your ear, they won't go too far. Be great if you could charge them at the same time.

Sounds like a $75 must have addon.

I can see it now, if you think Apple makes money selling dongles, look out, they will probably make a ton selling single AirPods for the ones people are defiantly going to loose.

Aside from profiteering, you should also consider the possibility of 'defensive' pricing. Scan this thread and consider how many people (who aren't very good at math) are already trying to come up with schemes to scam the replacement program just to get extra sets of these things. If Apple priced replacements at $20 just to be nice, eBay and Amazon would have to buy more servers to accommodate all the 'entrepreneurs' selling their ill-gotten wares.

I know that a lot of credit cards are offering purchase protection including lost. I wonder if, say, "losing one side of AirPod" would be eligible for a claim?

That's probably only if its lost in the mail. If you lose it by your own fault (accident or not), why would the CC company pay for that? That would be like an insurance markup or something.

It looks horrendous
How so? Its (almost) the same as the current corded versions, except no cord. So what makes these worse? So the current EarPods are fine, but cut the cords and somehow they become horrendous? Your logic is beyond stupid.

I recommend wireless earplugs for that situation. Hearing protection far more important then rapping out to hip hop wile ripping. : )

No, just don't buy them if they don't fit your lifestyle. There are plenty of other corded BT earbuds if you fear non-corded ones popping out. Also these are not sports buds. They are not intended to be worn while running or being active.

$69 is not unreasonable for a lost bud. I have a pair of Shure 535s. I tripped hard on the sidewalk landed on my right ear. The right bud cracked -- also had to get stitches in that ear. The replacement bud was $80. I was just happy I didn't have to buy a whole new pair. These are not inexpensive buds.

The $49 battery fee is a bit steep, but it's Apple. Reality is, like any BT buds, these are meant to be disposable with a two year life expectancy. Just another reason to hate BT buds as a category.
but my wired headphones work fine for "sport" now i have to spend more money for less functionality? seems like the trend at apple these days.

and i know you don't have to buy them. but they will be the norm in a few years

The product isnt a joke, the price is. But thats the beauty of capitalism, the market decides what price they sell for. If nobody buys them, the price goes down. If enough people think its worth it, well then, they are worth that price.
no, imo the product is a joke too. you can't change the volume without calling siri? LOL. having to charge the headphones also? i have infinite battery life relative to the phone now. again less functionality than what i have right now

I don't want to say anything that might come across as disrespectful to anyone who likes and wants these things, because I know how I feel when folks brusquely dismiss the Apple Watch, which I love, but many think is a waste of money.

It's just that to me, if the future is wireless, and this is a preview of it, ugh, it seems incredibly burdensome and I want to stay where I am. I can't see any pros, only cons. Usually I like being an early adopter but this wireless product in particular has me shaking my head the longer I contemplate how it's turning out so far. I just don't get the appeal. But if you all do, bless you, have fun and enjoy! Maybe in a few years it will be something I also will think is great.

But the expense and looks and the fact it's just begging to endure the same fate as a pair of socks at the laundry put me off big time. And the limited shelf life and the need to recharge the batteries put it at such a disadvantage to wired options. I did really want to like these, too.

Total ******* ripoff.

Tim Cook is a joke. The sooner he is fired, the sooner they can get someone in there to save Apple.

How this incompetent has lasted this long is beyond belief.

Ahhh. Another wasted post generated from an Apple newbie Hater, that clearly uses misdirection to disparage against Cook over an Airpod article. Fail on your behalf.

Anyways, at least Apple is providing the option for one Airpod, versus having to purchase a whole new set.

Yep, really doing a terrible job:

http://fortune.com/2016/06/08/fortune-500-most-profitable-companies-2016/
For the second year in a row, Apple AAPL 0.37% leads the Fortune 500’s 10 most profitable companies at number one. But this Silicon Valley tech titan has never been one to rest on its laurels. In just one year, the company’s profits rose by 35%. And though iPad sales declined in 2015, Apple reported record-breaking iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s sales last September—selling 13 million devices during its opening weekend alone. All gadgets considered, Apple reported historic profits with $53.4 billion in earnings.

$69 is more than reasonable. Sometimes criticism is too black and white when it should be a more nuanced mosaic of Apple's insecurities. I applaud Tim Cook and Apple for everything about the Airpods, the price, execution, and functionality.

So basically if you want a second pair of AirPods for yourself or a gift, just claim to Apple you lost them and you'll get a discount

Lol, if you don't need the charging case, sure. Each lost AirPod is 69, so $138 if you want a new pair. If you want the charging case for $49, then you are at $187 for a new set.

I would use the $20 as a down payment on a better table saw. 110 mph? Weak.

Actually it's a nice table saw, an old school cast iron Delta Unisaw weighing around 500 pounds.

The 110 mph was just a guess...

Given that it's a 10 inch blade and spins at 3,450 RPM (from a 220 volt 3 HP real horsepower, not fake Sears ShopVac horsepower, motor) the linear speed would be:

pi * diameter * revs/minute = 108,385 inches/minute

or...

108,385 in/min * 1 ft/12 in * 1 mile/5,280 ft * 60 min/hr = 102.6 mph

Plenty fast enough with enough power behind it to do significant damage.

You know what would be easier? If they were somehow connected so if one comes out, my $160 pair of headphones dont disappear and I'm crawling around the subway floor looking for it like some kind of bonobo. Ill give you an example. I rarely drop my phone but just yesterday I fell asleep on the subway and it fell out of my hand and slid downwards since the bottom of the car isn't totally flat. I kept looking under my seat to find it but couldn't. Luckily the woman sitting in front of me found it and gave it to me.

So following your logic, you should never have bought a phone that didn't have a wired tether to your wrist? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!

It's absolutely beyond me how stupid and entitled Americans have become. $70 to replace a lost item of a set? How much does Nike charge you if you lose your right shoe and need a replacement? They'll say tough, go buy a new pair. Anyone who is outraged by this is so out of touch with reality. Get real!
[doublepost=1481829411][/doublepost]
Now, an event that happens all the time if you take the subway (people bumping into you), or run outside can cost you $69. LOL. Biggest joke of a product Apple has come out in a long time.

But oh wait I know what people will tell me "don't bump into people" or "move to Montana" or "just don't seek human contact"

Has anyone ever bumped into you so hard that your earpods fell out? If so, you live a rough life.

So basically if you want a second pair of AirPods for yourself or a gift, just claim to Apple you lost them and you'll get a discount
discount? You would need to pay $207 for a set w the case.

----------

I find the prices for these lost replacements fair
