iMac Overhaul

Intersting that no one is mentioning an iMac that might include a touchscreen interface that continues the transfer of technology from the iOS world to the MacOS world. We have seen patents from Apple that include touchscreen interfaces that could easily be used on the iMac.

My vote... that is one overhaul that we will see on the iMac in 2012.

@anonicon: There are rumors that there will be indeed usb3.0 coexisting with thunderbolt.

And yes, the imac has an discrete gpu, but thats only an notebook (mobile) GPU, not an desktop one.

@GoodWrites: Jobs said once "it just didnt work" on the imac touchscreen idea. So its pretty sure that this idea is gone. I even will say that we never will see such an Device. At least not an imac.

And i would love to see for the imac not an ssd for the os but the same flash drive like in the MBA. (only for the OS, Programms on the SSD)

Tod.

While we're certain that the MacBook Pro will see new design next year

We are? And why pray tell? We lived six years with the last design, next year will only be year four, and it's not like anyone has been able to come up with anything that makes this design look anywhere near outdated.

We expect that the Air and Pro lines will have to eventually merge into one. Intel believes that the Air form factor will dominate the consumer market in the near future.

Why do "we" expect such a ridiculous prediction? Because Intel said so? Come on, that's ridiculous.

There will be no "merging". If anything anywhere nearly as drastic is to happen, Apple is to nix the product lines not mentioned in this report, but I have an incredibly hard time imagining Apple axing the iPod and MacBook Pro product lines as the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air lines are incomplete substitutes and constituents of both product lines will be without anything else from Apple to buy unless the idea is to force the customers in the direction of MacBook Airs and iPhones. But even that idea is ridiculous.

Preparing myself for an onslaught of negatives but here it goes:

iMac + Matte Screen Option.

There I said it and I don't regret anything. :D

Oh, and let's kill any silly talk of "if they remove the optical drive, they'll be able to do... (insert one of the following: 'make it thinner', 'add more battery life', 'give it a better GPU', add in another drive', etc.)" or "MacBook Pros with full SSDs" (as opposed to half-SSDs?) or "iMacs with desktop class GPUs that are just as thin" because either you've taken some of the current machines apart and therefore know that these lines of thought are physically impossible or you don't in which case it's all fantasy talk, and if we're here to talk fantasy, then how about the 15" MacBook Air with a quad-core Ivy Bridge i7, the AMD Radeon HD 6990M, and internal Blu-Ray Drive and ten hour battery life (with 30 day standby time) that's even thinner than the current MacBook Airs?

Because really, that's the machine to want out of this if we're disregarding rationality and the laws of physics.

Just get a third-party optical drive.

I use a $40 LaCie external optical drive with my Mac mini server (last year's model).

Not a big deal.

Oh please no!! That would SUCK!! Touchscreen desktops are a TERRIBLE IDEA!! They just kill your back! Even touch screen laptops would kill your back! The only things that are good with touchscreen tech are phones, tablets, mp3 players/iPods etc.

We already have a touch interface for OSX. It's called the track pad.

God no! The iMac design is good how it is.

That so? You like that it is so thin that it is always on the verge of overheating. That you need suction cups to get at anything? Frankly, while the G4 iMac's design wasn't the best, it's no pre-iSight G5, and if the iMac should have an internal design like any previous Mac, it should be that one.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I hope the next iMac will look like a cinema display (ditch the metal strip at the bottom)

Guys, it's too early for this...

I still haven't recovered from the rumors about the redesign of the iPhone 5.

Come on People ....lets not all get idiotic.

This is just a rumor.

And if it is true ...You will STILL jump for joy ! Because you all were programed that way and can't help it

The fans more than suffice in keeping the imac cool. That the aluminium body feels hot is irrelevant since you will not be hugging it or having it rest on your lap or anything. I don't plan to touch the internals of my imac ever (never did even with my previous windows desktop CPUs), so the fact that I need suction cups to open it up doesn't really mean anything. I would also worry about a thin metal rod supporting a heavy 27' screen, which seems like it might snap at any moment.

So yes to all your questions. ;)

Yeah! +1 to that!

Bring back the iMac G4 look!

Yeah somehow I doubt Apple is going to go backwards into the past with their next iMac design!
