I wonder if the recent price drop to $69 will stay for the current model only, and one of these predicted new units will be higher?
you can pretty much bet on it. Personally, I will not mind at all. I will gladly pay more for a better ATV. The current version is horrendously outdated (particularly the UI).

forget the watch, this is exactly what I was waiting for and something people will actually use. AAPL is going to make a lot of $ with this.
same here. I am very ambivalent about the watch and definitely have no plans to buy one any time soon but I've been waiting for a new ATV for a long time. day 1 purchase for me definitely.

We've heard this song from Apple before. Believe it when you see it.
no, we haven't. Apple never said anything about a pending ATV upgrade. there have been plenty of rumors but nothing coming from Apple. not that they are saying anything now either but the mere fact that they did cut the price of the current ATV suggests that a new version is coming. Apple doesn't normally do it otherwise.

Yes! Independence! Apple has a proprietary system that will not allow NAS's to stream directly to the :apple:tv with out the Mac. It would awesome if they opened that up so we could do that.

Airplay has been cracked for years. Your NAS can't stream via airplay?

Price is the question. Along with configuration.

Amazon and Google have both gotten feet on the ground which play better with non-Apple things, including home PCs.

Even the Intel Compute Stick is coming. $150 dollars to turn your TV into a full Windows8.1 PC (and the range of Programs there). Others won't be far behind in a year or so.

Apple let their "hobby" device languish a bit too long while waiting for the moribund TV industry to get its act together and realize it was about to go the way of RIAA.

The only advantage AppleTV has left is AirPlay lock-in (and even that wouldn't matter with something like the Compute Stick) and Apple's App/Device ecosystem. Both of those things are getting weaker all the time.

Look how happy everybody is now. I'm looking forward to the rage at announcement when the device is lacking features of competitors at a starting price of $499. Everybody will say that Apple gone full retard and nobody will buy it.

Some how it will outsell all set-top boxes.

Nonetheless it would mean devices like the HDHomerun would be usable on an AppleTV. I'm not holding my breath, however, as Apple has never much been one to follow standards others than ones they set.

On the other hand, an App Store would allow someone to write an app for the HD Homerun devices.

awesome I am in need for an update. my Apple TV 3 used to work great but for some strange reason it takes FOREVER to stream local files from my iTunes library now. it keeps buffering pausing buffering pausing yet streaming stuff from Netflix etc works fine. so nowadays I cbf waiting for it to finally play and just plug my RMBP onto the TV to watch my local stuff

There should be a place where we can all send our old ones so they can be used to harvest bit coins.

from the moment I heard they were discounting the current :apple:TV, I was convinced that they would introduce a better or different version soon. And here it is!

Apple never "just" lower prices.

I hope the team that redesigned the Airport Extreme get involved in the redesign of the Apple TV form factor.

Sorry Comcast

Any time I have an opportunity to take revenue away from Comcast I am happy. Cut all the video get a simple Internet feed. Life is good>

My only concern about the new Apple TV is that only has one mini C USB port?

I can't see this being a serious gaming machine because the rumors say it's going to be smaller/sleeker than the current TV.

Yes... exactly

If it in deed has decent storage space, presumably to store downloaded apps, I wonder if it will also be capable of storing ones music collection and photo library...

I would love a 128GB Apple tv on which I could store my music and photos along with downloaded apps to accompany iOS like stock apps such as Music and Photos...

Basically an iPhone Apple TV hybrid :)

Thing is they will want to keep the price down to compete so I doubt this will happen, even though personally I think if they offered multiple storage options like the iPhone etc it would sell well, what do you all think?

If it has an A8 or A8X, it will be fine for gaming. Maybe it can't play the latest games at max settings but it will probably at least be on par with a PS3 or Xbox 360.

I wonder what kind of game controller support it will have. If there's an app store, there will be games, probably good ones too. I wonder if Apple will make a game controller or they will rely on 3rd party ones. I wonder if they will redesign the Apple TV remote as well.

We just purchased our first Apple TV about 2 months ago, and my wife got one for my daughter just last week. Good thing my daughters is unopened and we still have the receipt- it's going back.

I am able to stream directly to the Apple TV from my NAS, no Mac needed.

I have a Synology NAS, and it allows me to select the Apple TV as my media player (the list has my other DLNA devices, and the Apple TV too) and it essentially Air Play's the file, without the need of a Mac.

An update of the NAS software added Apple TV playback as a feature, a couple (or more) years ago. Before it was just DLNA. So it may depend on what brand NAS you have and whether they've added support for it.
