Ahh yes, but will it have DLNA support ??
That is the question.

DLNA is a terrible protocol. If they actually have an app store and SDK, I'm sure someone will cook up an app that can play with DLNA, and it'll be a nightmare, like every other janky-ass "connected" DLNA experience.

This could be a very capable and under-the-radar game console. You would have a huge number of customers who would never buy an XBox, Wii, or PlayStation that would suddenly have a decent console with thousands of games available.

Very capable. The A8X with a few tweaks and connected to an external power source is going to be plenty powerful enough for serious video games. Sure not as powerful as an XBone, but if I'm presented with an App store and a $10 copy of Borderlands 2, that might tied me over and satisfy my video game needs for a few months. My video game right now is XCom on my iPad Air 2. And I haven't even tried mirroring it onto an Apple TV.

pre-cursor to ARM-based Mac?

Well, we long-time Apple users know that the original AppleTV was Mac mini in different enclosure. And Apple shrunk the logic board without changing its architecture much, because it was their 'hobby project'. It had intel CPU still. So, even though it has smaller logic board and enclosure, it's another Mac in different package and boot into BackStage app ( AppleTV version of FrontStage ).

Then, it's not hard to assume that they used the same OS ( at least kernel ) to Mac OS X. Probably they got rid of many unnecessary component of OS, like desktop manager, etc.

Now, they have ARM based AppleTV. Then it means they have ARM version of OS X. ( Well, kernel-wise already iOS and Mac OS X uses the same one since OS X Lion, and just different version since Snow Leopard or Leopard )

Hmmm....
It sounds like that probably ARM version of Mac is not so far from its announcement or, whether they finally decide to announce it or not, they have ARM-based OS X running some Mac somewhere in Apple's HQ.

The new units might be even cheaper actually, since this comes with a monthly service I'm sure Apple wants to get it in to as many hands as possible. the monthly service is where they will really make the money.

Apple TV 3 will probably remain, the new ATV will be price between $99 - $149. Hopefully $99.

Why do you think there is a huge number of customers who wanted a gaming system and wouldn't buy one?

I think it's more likely that there are many customers who want a streaming device that works with their Apple stuff and as a by product, start enjoying games on the App Store. There are many people like my mom who weren't into gaming at all (at least since some casual use in the NES days when I was a kid) and got into it once she got an iPad a few years ago.

If your TV suddenly has access to all of your purchases and they make it so that it can easily work on the TV, then many people might find it more useful and buy more games or buy additional boxes for their kids because they're cheaper than a console and generally app store games are more kid-friendly.

I just wish Apple would release their own branded controllers. Some decent ones have finally started to come out but I prefer first-party. Minecraft: PE on a TV with a controller would be neat, especially as it could be done for way cheaper than a dedicated console. I can see lots of parents seeing the value in that. Heck I'm a grown ass man who loves Minecraft and see the value in that. Apple is finally to the point where they could make a serious dent in the console industry—especially as a Nintendo contender. Nintendo was always more for kids, although I enjoyed many of their games as an adult. I see Apple as more of a Nintendo than Xbox or PlayStation. The hardware has also caught up. Just like Nintendo never wowed with crazy graphics, any Apple console would be similar and be more about fun gameplay for more casual gamers. I enjoy both types of gaming so I would happily have that alongside my Xbox One.

Too late Apple. I've had 2 of the 'latest' Apple TV boxes for a long time now and gave up on them last month once Amazon reduced the price of their Fire TV boxes to £64 - far better hardware, all the apps I need (Plex, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other apps) for a low price.

Awesome. I've been waiting/hoping for an updated ATV for a long time. Faster processor, internal storage, SIRI, app/gaming capability - should be a really nice upgrade if this all comes to fruition.

No remote included anymore, iPhone 6 required to operate. Just a USB C port on the box and nothing else, for charging and connecting to the TV. You'll just have to buy a bunch of adapters. And you won't be able to stream from iTunes anymore. Fanbois will cheer for it.

Only years late to the party... lol. Maybe it will actually be a box worth buying now.

years late? they were at the party before most of the competition. remember who copied who, here?

anyway, ive been using mine for years near daily and love it. netflix, youtube, my own content, itunes content, and beaming what little amazon content i need. plus AirPlay from my or my friends iOS devices is a hoot.

welcome to the party.

maybe it finally evolves out of the hobby category?
What a wasted opportunity to make $$$$$$$$$

The problem isn't the hardware, it's the negotiations. Users want all "their" shows available day of release, and other distributors will fiercely protect their licensing agreements to minimize Apple's ability to do so. Took a powerhouse like HBO to break that headlock. Comcast et al want to keep their extremely profitable "packages" paradigm in place, and :apple: wants to destroy it. There are lots of billions of $$$ at stake here. Producing the ever-rumored post-hobby :apple:TV requires very big contracts.

Apple might have been at the party before the competition, but then it seems they got completely drunk while the competition has not just caught up but far surpassed it.

Only thing I really want is:

UNIFIED SEARCH.

Please. Please bring this.

App Store is nice, Siri is Nice, etc... but finding a video across all of those apps/channels? You got to have unified search.

Yup, far better hardware than the unreleased Apple TV in the story you're replying to- of which you know nothing about... (Of course if this rumor is true the Apple TV will be more powerful due to the A8 or A8X).

Please Apple now allow us access Beats with iTunes Match and have the audio quality improved to DTS-HD, one can only dream.

I'm wasn't talking about the new Apple TV, I'm talking about the current ATV vs the competition. My point is that they've let the current generation ATV languish too long to the point where people are switching to other, better solutions and it'll be hard to win them back unless the new one is somehow vastly better.
