Wow....perfect timing!! I was in Best Buy last night playing around with the G3 TV ($69) and considering buying it to replace my G2 TV (works fine but loads content slowly off the net...much slower than my laptop). But walked out without buying the G3. With the G4 coming out, this will be a slam dunk for me. Hope they stick to $69 for the G4. i use my Apple TV all the time!!!

I know this is a long stretch but I would hope the 'new' Apple A8 powered AppleTV allows for 4K streaming.

With Metal, if Apple put an A8X in the next Apple TV and aren't stingy with flash memory, we'd have a console very competitive with the Xbox 360 on a technical level.

That's the main thing I want. It could run the games already on the App Store and would be awesome. They need to put flash memory akin to what they offer on the iPads where you could get 64 or 128 if you want. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I think this seems like it's been the obvious next move for the Apple TV for a long time. Hopefully Apple finally pulls the trigger this year. If they also add support for the MFI game controllers it could easily pull ahead of the other set top boxes.

I picked up a Nexus Player and haven't used my AppleTV since. Hopefully Apple finally catches up to the competition, although it's embarrassing how long it has taken.

Ahh yes, but will it have DLNA support ??
That is the question.

DLNA is like SMART, interoperability is low.

What it most glaringly lacks is the ability to SMB / AFP / NFS mount a remote share and play files off of it. Which is exactly what Apple doesn't want us to do, they want us to pay for streaming the limited selection available that way, over and over each time.

This is why when I got fed up with my Boxee Box flaking I got a NUC and put OpenElec on it. My TV already does Netflix, this does the rest.

Only years late to the party... lol. Maybe it will actually be a box worth buying now.

I think this might be too little too late honestly. I wanted this years ago but my Roku's fit my needs perfectly and I haven't had to wait. I don't care about this stupid streaming TV service, I just wanted options like Plex on the ATV .. App Store access was a no brainer but they wouldn't do it and have now been passed by.

It's about freaking time. The ATV needs an update on essentially every metric. I really REALLY hope the UI gets a complete overhaul as well. And PLEASE include an RF remote. My Amazon Fire TV Stick has spoiled me in that regard.

This is really good news. I'm not that interested in the Apple Watch, but this new Apple TV really got my attention. I'm very pleased with my Apple TV but curious how the new device would be like. :apple:

I agree.... the current GUI is a bit anti-Apple in the way it all works.

Well, at least something! Let's hope it also comes with AC wireless and less bandwidth restrictions to unleash all the A8 power. Finally, we would have a device that can easily accept Blu-Ray streams without transcoding! A shame though, I would've thought that we get a A9-based device next, but it seems Apple wants to prioritize them for the next iPhones first, before the Apple TV gets such an upgrade.

While the A7 SoC has the capability of playing 4K H.264 with up to about 50mbps, the A8 can not only go a lot higher with H.264, but it also seems to have "hidden" H.265 capabilities (which could be used soon, when they announce the TV streaming service), which are currently not exposed through the APIs to outside apps.

To be competitive though, Apple needs 4K streaming (Netflix and also Amazon are already there), so I guess they're either still going to rely on H.264 (doubtful, too much bandwidth) or they finally enable access to the H.265 decoder unit and offer lower bandwidth and higher quality streaming with it. Only then the next Apple TV would make sense.

That would require mass ownership of the Time Capsule. Thus two purchases for those who don't own one. That group is a massive group. From a marketing standpoint what would be the appeal of the ATV if I have to buy another device to get all the features I want?

Not to mention the Apple TV is already connected to a monitor for displaying a UI to navigate and configure home kit devices. The Time Capsule would either have to gain some kind of video output or be managed via your computer/iOS device. Adding the features into Airport Utility, creating a stand alone app or offering a web interface would be solutions. While this may be no problem for tech savvy people, those less tech inclined would find the remote management of the Time Capsule from another device cumbersome. For most people I'm willing to bet the Time Capsule is something they plug in and forget about after the initial setup prompts. Many many people just get a wireless router from their ISP anyway.

Not buying into this anymore until Apple official announces that they've dropped it as a hobby.

I came so close to ordering one last week, I'm glad I held out.

Waiting until June isn't a big deal, especially as I'll get a new TV set around then anyway :)

If Apple TV signs up with the Big Four, also gets ESPN, NBCSN, FS1/2 and some of the bigger Cable TV stations, I'm cutting the cable.
