Apple owes the iPod, if it is going to axe it at least the iPod Classic deserves to go out in style with a Farewell Special Edition of a new iPod Classic with 500GB and a cool new design. I bet they would sell lots of them.

I just don't see a reason for them to do that. It be nice if they did but I just don't see it. Can this ipod even do airplay? I don't think they can so what is special about them except HD space.

I use a Western Digital My Book Live 1TB  for my music which I can view or control from every computer or Apple gadget in the house, that way my music is all done in Apple lossless and not mp3 or acc. When I go out I can see how some people would want a big gig ipod but at least for me 15 gig of music is plenty for most trips. I have over 600 GB of music which when it goes on the iphone is converted to 128 ACC. The server is always on so inside the house and outside in the backyard all 4 of us can get movies and music flawless.

I don't see where the ipod classic sits in today's smart phone world. Actually I like to see and ipod itouch 3G which should really be Apple next push. :)

The classic is a great music player. It would be a huge shame to discontinue it with no real replacement capacity wise. The touch and iPhone are both great devices but poor music players. I don't keep a single song on my iPhone.

I'm fine if they don't update the Shuffle, it's pretty much perfect for what it offers. But I'd be pretty upset if they discontinued it - it's perfect for running/exercise.

Just stop updating it/stop putting R&D towards it, but for the love of running, don't discontinue it.

I get why Apple would kill the Classic. But I love my Classic so. Just love it. I'll use mine till its teeny hard drive skids to a stop.

Damn it, I'd buy an iPod Classic if they weren't so overpriced. I mean Apple sure isn't doing itself any favors in terms of sales, seeing as it's still $250 for 120GB. An awesome product that is way overpriced.

It also makes me sad because there will be nothing left to fill in the large capacity gap. The iPod Touch is the closest thing to an iPod Classic we'll have, and the largest they offer them is 64GB, and it's also over $400.

Discontinuing the Shuffle is a little surprising to me. I figured there would be a nice market for them, as they're only $50.

Screw Apple! They shouldn't have discontinued the ipod. Apple is no longer a company I have any respect for ANYMORE. They have gone too far.. I hope it does crumble under Tim Cooks Totalitarian command.

With Jobs gone(almost), the company might have problems.. as I don't trust Apple anymore. I am about to toss my Apple stuff in the trash.

The ipod nano will stay because alot of joggers and people that work out prefer it's small clip on profile.

The ipod touch combined with the icloud kinda makes the classic's chunky profile obsolete, so i can see why they'd phase it out. But Apple may have to put 3G capabilities in the ipod touch or increase its flash drive size to 128gigs to fill that hole left by the classic effectively.

Not EVERYONE will want to splurge for an iphone and get locked into a contract, so i can see the ipod touch remaining in Apple's line up for a long long time. Personally tho, unless Apple comes out with a low cost no contract or icloud iphone, i think They should bump up the touches specks and give it better cameras and the A5 chip to make it relevant. It won't eat into the iphone sales IMHO.

Only a week to go before all this endless speculating will finally end. YAY!!!

At least until the ipad 3 and redesigned macbook pro rumors heat up. Ha ha ha.

iPod Touch is the future

I agree with everyone who says that Apple will be phasing out both the iPod Classic and the iPod Shuffle (perhaps the Nano will be renamed iPod Shuffle).

However, the iPod Touch is a part of Apple's future plans, an iOS device that supports the capabilities of the iPhone, but is not an iPhone.

Yes, I believe that Apple will position the iPod Touch as the iPhone killer. Apple will do this by combining their own Skype like app with 802.22.

I know 802.22 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.22) is down the road, but what if Apple was to add it to a future iPod (or iPad).

802.22 has a range of 62 miles, from one single base station. Now, where would Apple put these base stations? How about in every Apple store for starters. Both NYC and San Francisco each have five Apple stores. If Apple places 802.22 base stations in each store, they would cover both cities multiple times.

Will this solution replace the need for iPhones for everyone, no. But in major cities it would.

Perhaps this is a part of the big plan for Apple's new data center.

So don't rule out the iPad Touch just yet.

Out with the old in with the new. When the first iPod Nano came out that should of been a given that eventually Apple would be shifting everything towards flash storage. And does anyone remember the 1st generation shuffle? It looked more like a big flash-drive then a music device.

The iCloud service means it's no longer quite as important to carry around huge collections of media files. That said, if Apple introduces a super-iPod touch model with 128GB of flash (at $399 where the 64GB model is now), there's not really any reason to keep the iPod Classic around. I think that's what they'll do.

Yes, the iPod shuffle is going away.

Well, the Shuffle occupies a useful price point and Apple like to maintain their price points. The MBook got discontinued because the MB Air replaced it at that price. Unless they have a replacement, I don't see it. It's a great 'disposable' iPod for joggers and the like, and for giving your kids, who invariably lose/destroy them. Why remove it unless it's not selling?

Same goes for the Classic. It doesn't require anything other than a cspacity bump to keep selling - no new tech, no extra R&D. I use mine for capacity and battery time and the fact I don't have to look at a screen to go to the next track when driving.

I love my iPad but touch comes secondary to capacity and battery life - I have 300Gb plus of lossless tracks and I want to be able to carry as much of them as possible. iTunes Plus tracks over internet are not a satisfactory replacement.

I have both an iPhone 4 and a 80gb classic that I got 5 years ago. I use the ipod pretty much in-car only for driving tunes. I just leave it connected in my glove box. The only times I take the iPod out is to sync music or a long plane ride. If anything, they should release a hard drive only option with the "iPod OS" loaded. I don't need a screen when my receiver has a display for me. Just my 2 cents.

I don't see it happening at all.
Apple will be shooting them Selfs in the foot.
The iPod line still makes money, not as much as it used too. But there is a market,

I think if anything, the iPod line will get a big refresh.

I don't see why you'd want to shut down a product that's still making you profits. Maybe to streamline it I guess...
Unless, the iPod classic and Shuffle aren't making any money to Apple... in which case they should axe away.

Three quick questions:

1. what does discontinuing a ten year old product line have to do with respect?

2. when did Apple discontinue the iPod product line?

3. why would your through your "Apple stuff" in the trash? That makes no sense, especially if your talking about iPods?

One second you're whining about Apple's dropping a product line and in protest you would through out products that you own? Are you okay? Is there someone you can call for help?

Could make sense to kill it from a manufacturing standpoint. The nano, while a different form factor uses the same touch tech as the Touch now. Between the Classic and the Shuffle, they could shut down two production lines that have for the most part been replaced by more modern versions.

I'll still be sad to see the Classic go, as it was my first player, but I can see why it could make sense.

Meh, just kill it. You have the cloud so you have unlimited storage.

Agreed- the Nano doesn't work quite as well because of the button-less interface. Even with headphone controls it wouldn't work for me because I can't wear the Apple headphones while exercising- they just won't stay put. The Shuffle was also a way to get people hooked into the iTunes community at a low price point- I'd be surprised to see it go without a big price drop in the Nano.

I'd imagine the iPod Classic makes up very little profit margins. Probably hardly even noticeable in the past dozen or so quarters unless you zoom in on the graph a bit.

Keep the Touch and Nano line, discard the rest.

I'm surprised they hung on to the Classic this long. I'm not sure about the Shuffle, but I won't really shed a tear to see it go.
