Sort of off-topic, but I thought Verizon was requiring all new smartphones to be LTE capable. That would leave out the iPhone 4/4S completely. I could swear I read about this earlier this year.

I'm not thrilled given the cost of Flash. Why on earth can't they do a 8GB iPhone 4, 16GB iPhone 4S, and then put out a 128GB iPhone 5 at the top slot, or at least, lower the price of the 64gig? I mean, at $829, it wouldn't affect their profit margins given the massive declines in price since the release of the iPhone 4S...

Apple: We might sell our devices competitively, but we get you if you dare want to store anything on the device.

Given the cost of flash? I wasn't aware it had plummeted. It constitutes a LARGE portion of the costs for the iPhone.

And it's $849.

On the one hand, they probably want to avoid higher storage capacity so that they can reap the benefits of those who want extra storage and are forced to buy into the iTunes Match and upgraded iCloud storage offerings.

On the other hand, with the size of apps lately due to retina graphics and such, more storage might be a necessary thing.

I haz a confused

Even though I am excited about future designs for the iPhone (although, I'm not uber elated about the upcoming iPhone), I have to say that the 3GS is still one good looking device. More so than a lot of the competitors' current offerings. If Apple brought back a revamped version of the 3G/3GS, I would be very happy with that.

Apple's paying I believe under a buck a gig now. The difference between the "free" model and the top model is negligible in cost-$50ish a unit v. $400 at retail. Huge ripoff.

Article? I'd love to read that myself because I thought I have seen that report before.

I'm hopin the 4S stays at 16GB (plan on buying unlocked after the price drop) but if it drops to 8, I'll be bummed but I'll still buy it.

Pedantry, maybe, but the 4 and 4S aren't "new" smartphones, they're existing smartphones that are still being sold.

If Verizon are requiring LTE on all new smartphones, I would take that to mean brand-new releases.

that's it, all the leaks were for an upgraded 8gb iPhone 4S :D:D:D:D:D

Wouldn't that be crazy? The leaks have been for a iPhone 4S LTE with 8 GB for $99 or $149 and Apple introduces the all new iPhone 5 for $229 with entirely new design that will be released in a couple of months :)

Good news for anyone that wants a new free iPhone since the iPhone 4 works well with IOS 6.

It might work well, but considering how many iOS 6 features are not going to be supported by the iPhone 4, I would think it's a much better value to just pay the $99 and get the 4S. Besides, this might be the last iOS version for the 4, so for future proofing's sake, the 4S is the best option for a "not so tech savy" person getting an iPhone for the first time.

Flash prices have fallen. I posted a few graphs from DRAMexchange in a thread recently.

But as I said in the post, I have no idea if that's a large enough decrease for Apple to decide to increase capacity. My guess is no.

I have a vague recollection that the iPhone used to be behind the iPod Touch on memory because the Touch had two memory slots to the one in the equivalent iPhone, due to not having the same internal components. Is that still the case?

maybe these wont be considered "new" phones.

Considering the similarities between the 4 and the 4S it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple simply offer a single model (4S) with only memory as the differentiating factor (8GB free, 16GB $99)

Siri, FaceTime over 3G, Flyover in maps, turn-by-turn directions all require the 4S.

// edit and beyond the similarities, the difference are just as important, having to source one camera instead of two for example will cut costs. Utilizing the 32nm A5 instead of an A5 and an A4. Yeah it just makes a lot of sense.

This makes some sense, but 8gb is too small, need more!

On a side note, take a look at that picture. I still think it looks better than the 4/5 iPhone.

I'm totally with you on this. The 3Gs was a marvelous device, and iOS 3 still has all what I needed in general (except maybe the missing folders). Plus, the really ergonomic hand-friendly form and good looks, especially the white one. Also a great overall battery performance and one hell of a battery wonder on iOS 3 while using EDGE - and having location and push services on. ;)

I will surely miss it, but of course, it's time to move on.

They've done this for the past years.

$0 4 8Gb
$99 4S 8Gb
$199 5 16Gb/32Gb
$299 5 32Gb/64Gb
$399 5 64Gb/128Gb

Doubt the storage options the right of the "/" but Apple may surprise us.

The iPhone 4 will be $0.99, just like the 3GS is now. No freebies. ;)

I really want them to drop the 8GB iOS device all together.
Bring back the 16GB iPhone 4 for free/$1, Price the 16GB 4S at $99, then tempt people with just a 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB 5. I don't see 128 happening quite yet, unless they managed to free up more space for an extra NAND chip, or they released 128GB chips Apple has deemed 'usable'. In either case I'm betting MacRumors would have pointed that out to us (Which they may have, since I don't live my entire life on here.)

But as for the iPod touch... I see absolutely no reason why we've had the 8GB/32GB/64GB models... seems more sensible to just have 16GB instead of 8 since flash memory is supposed to be so cheap nowadays.

I personally find the phone on the photo much more attractive than the part-assembled iPhone 5 photos. The design of the original hasn't aged a bit after all these years.

It took a couple years to get 32GB with the 3GS and then a couple more to get 64GB with the 4S. It will be at least one more year before we see 128GB iPhone.
