On VZW's network? I don't think so...
Heh... i've done it several times. Heck, my phone asks "do you really want to go back to the menu screen?" when you want to do other stuff on your phone while on a call! Verizon just doesn't tell ya that this is a feature....

I believe EDGE isn't broadband, meaning, voice OR data.

3G you can get voice and/or data.

However, with WiFi you should be able to do both as well, correct?

EDGE is data. Slower than 3G and not capable of simultaneous voice and data.

3G, you get simultaneous voice and data on AT&T. Not on Verizon, it's either or.

Uh, there's a difference between being able to do things that are already on your phone during a call and use data while on a call. Go try to surf the internet while on a call on your Verizon phone. It won't work. It's not a feature they don't tell you about. EvDO is simply not capable of simultaneous voice and data. Period.

Feel the burn!

Now awaiting kdarling's response about how many wonderful phones Verizon has/will have that no one cares about and Rodimus Prime's whining that simultaneous voice/data isn't really a feature, but a lack of civility.

Disclaimer: I don't like AT&T, but I've not had a problem with their coverage. I don't like Verizon either.

You don't have to be on 3G, but if you aren't, you waste your minutes pretty fast while to use EDGE to look something up ;)

Huh? You absolutely need to be on 3G to use data while on a call. I FINALLY was able to do this
when I upgraded from my iPhone 2G a few months ago. I think these commercials are great!

I'd be very surprised if the Droid or any other Android-based phone can't do this. Edit: just read yg17's post above ;)

This is something that I use quite a bit. Whenever I call a company I am inevitably put in the queue / on hold and I often play games / browse Twitter/Facebook/MacRumors while I wait.

I'd be very surprised if the Droid or any other Android-based phone can't do this.

It has nothing to do with the phone. It's the network. CDMA/EvDO is not capable of simultaneous voice and data. UMTS is. The Droid can't do it, and the Droid will never be able to do it in its current form.

Well, good for Apple for standing up for AT&T even though AT&T has been a big drag for Apple.

That's called class. Apple sure didn't have to do this. They could have just kept promoting the app store in all their ads and let AT&T deal with all this. But they decided to step in and help.

I like that.

I'm pretty sure that "Island of misfit toys" ad from VZW in particular would have really pissed off Apple. I'm sure these ads are only the tip of the iceberg if we continue to see VZW portraying the iPhone in that way. It has been a while since an Apple product has been publicly attacked in such a way. Apple's ad agency is at their most dangerous when somebody is knocking them down. I can't wait to see what they come up with!

yeah, i don't think you get it. browsing menus on the device is not the same as accessing data over the wireless network.

how many ways does it have to be worded before you accept the fact that verizon devices WILL NOT be able to do a phone call at the same time the device is ACCESSING DATA over the verizon network?!

Good luck with that DROID (and the 256MB App limit!) :)

Speaking of DROID, I finally got my hands on one Saturday while I was at a Verizon store exchanging a Jawbone headset. I really don't get all the fawning. The hardware keyboard sucks - not at all better than the virtual keyboard on the iPhone (or the DROID itself for that matter). The flat keys seemed to offer no benefit over a virtual keyboard whatsoever. The obsession of some with hardware keyboards is baffling.

The industrial design of the phone was a yawner - again, not up to the raving the device has received on all the prominent tech blogs. And the software...well, it's Android. Promising, but still half-baked. I saw some things I liked, but overall it felt convoluted and unintuitive.

iPhone killer? I don't think so.

So no iPhone on Verizon?

There goes my hope of switching carriers..

Yea I think these ads kinda kill that...

Good ads tho, shows off a nice HSPA only feature, also something that I have used personally a ton of times.

Regardless of Apple's feelings towards AT&T, for the time being, they are their partner, and they came through for their partner as they should..

This is not about Apple "getting the back" of their partner. This is solely about Apple trying to counter the potential damage to iPhone sales going into the Christmas season. Supporting At&t is the ancillary benefit of Apple supporting their own product.

You don't have to be on 3G, but if you aren't, you waste your minutes pretty fast while to use EDGE to look something up ;)

The EDGE technology does not support simultaneous voice and data communication. If you're on EDGE, you will need to be on Wifi in order to get online while talking.
And no, it doesn't waste any more minutes doing so.

Weak commercial. I can do that on my Pre already....what wow factor? Its coverage not features war.

no one has said this is unique to the iPhone. pay attention. this is a NETWORK capability. verizons network can not support simultaneous voice/data access. atts can. period. end of story.

pre is exclusive to sprint still is it not? not familiar with sprint network abilities, but regardless, it has nothing to do with this post.

Well, if Apple can show that AT&T's 3G network works as fast as their ads indicate it would be one thing. Unfortunately, the script should, in reality, go like "Hi, Tom... let me get you directions... hang on a second... still waiting... just got connected..." and so on. NOBODY's 3G network works as quickly as Apple shows when they switch from app to app. So while, yes, the iPhone can do voice and data simultaneously, it just doesn't happen that fast, so it's a bit misleading.

I always use this feature and I LOVE it!!! It was one of the things I was looking forward to when I switched from Sprint to AT&T. I will never go back to a CDMA network until they get the ability to do voice and data at the same time.

That's interesting, since I use voice + data on EDGE all the time. (T-Mobile Germany)
