Yep. She's a great choice. She worked hard to turn Burberry back into begin a fashion icon and out of the reach of chav culture. And, visits to Burberry stores have always been a positive experience for me which contrasts greatly with visits to Dixons stores (Bartlett's previous masterwork).
Agreed - Interestingly, she just spoke at the Salesforce Dreamforce conference in 2012. Not that it really means anything, because Silicon Valley is a very small town, but it was a good presentation, and I have to wonder if being at such a huge tech conference sparked her interest in Apple and/or Apple's interest in her.

That she likely had a hand in the Burberry fashion show that was shot on a 5S is an indictment she shouldn't be the one trying to sell this type of technology. I own a 5S and, in hindsight, that was one of the most uninspiring videos I've seen in a long time. The people in charge of the shot obviously didn't have a grasp of the capabilities of the 5S. If this was a preview of her ability to sell Apple products, Apple is not in good hands.

This is a statement. Ahrendts is an internationally respected merchant at one of the world's prestige brands. During her seven years in the top job, Burberry's revenues have nearly tripled and shares rose more than 300%.
Well that sounds like a nice hire. If she triples Apple's revenues... ummmm...well...nm. :p

someday Apple will no longer make computers. It will just be another consumer electronics company.
Hiring fashion execs for a computer company is the start.

I agree.

In 10 years Apple will only make designer clothing that plugs into your nervous system.

Microsoft will follow suit but its clothes will only come in black, Zune brown, and Gates purple.

Google's offering will be free but it will try to control your body in a clumsy attempt to predict what you want to do.

So never mind that Burberry's revenues tripled and the stock was up 300% under her tenure as CEO. What is it with people here always being negative and assuming every decision is bad for Apple.

Yes, she's good at selling clothes. Her first attempt to sell the new iPhone was a fail.

Lmfao. What a joke.

She's in charge of marketing. Not product design. Absolutely asinine comment.

Burberry-tartan iWatch anyone?

'good'? You probably don't know that fashion has been struggling as an industry over the past few years-- so for her to do all that at Burberry while other labels barely break even speaks volumes.

Give her a chance, gheez!

Leave it to the sexist techies to berate this woman who is more than qualified to handle high-end retail and online stores at Apple. There already isn't enough women involved in tech at any capacity and here you guys go already prepping for this woman's failure. Way to go guys! What was Ron Johnson's background when he came to Apple? Ohh yeah that's right discount retailing at Target.

----------

I don't know where you get that from (as you provided no explanation). She seems a much better fit for the job than Browett, who was never aligned with Apple's values.

Or Ron Johnson when he started.

This.Just.Isn't.Going.To.Work.Out.

Why not? What was it about Ron Johnson in 2000 that made you know he was going to work out for Apple?

As I seem to recall (I think from the Steve Jobs biography), Ron Johnson's work in creating the Apple Store was a co-effort alongside Jobs. They had an intense working relationship.

The way I see it, this SVP position will sink or swim dependent on the resulting working relationship between said SVP and the dynamic Ive-Federighi duo.

So this was purely a financial decision? Ok, I get it now.

But, did Ron Johnson actually work out? He has since been a flop. And you could have put any idiot in charge of selling the iPod/iPhone/iPad and they would have "worked out" for Apple. However, that was a different Apple than now. As far as indications go, Apple may never have another iPod/iPhone/iPad. I guess Apple May have to veer towards the fashion biz.

have you ever bought a car?

the car companies are trying to make you think you can drive like a race car driver when all you're going to do is crawl in traffic

burberry make some decent quality stuff

most of these "luxury" labels sell cheapo quality clothes with a lot of hype and advertising behind it. but the clothes fall apart in a few months

Didn't know Apple was having trouble selling the 5S...please enlighten us about all the people who were put off buying the new phone because of the way Burberry marketed it at their fashion show.

It's not even that, it's simply that fashion and other 'luxury' items were the first to go when things go tough in 2008 and beyond. Clothes are not the biggest money makers, it's actually accessories, watches, bags, and sunglasses, again,,, most likely to cut off and/or replace with cheaper alternatives.

Burberry bags are priced around $1,000 -- definitely a pricepoint beyond many women's reach especially since you can get a decent Coach / Kate Spade / any other mid-tier brand for $200 or so. Heck you can get a Kenneth Cole Reaction for less than $100.

I hear what you are saying that Burberry quality is part of the reason of the strong sales, but I think it takes a very good CEO to keep the label afloat and profitable.
