i can't see this happening with iOS 4.3 being so hyped up from apple, they are definitely going to let 4.3 soak in for more than 3-4 weeks.

Having a press event for it doenst mean it will be released that time. It will probably be released when the next iphone is out in june or july.

Really hope this unlocks the FM functionality on the Broadcom chip. I still listen to FM (in the UK) and this would save my data usage when using radio apps over 3G.

Ofcourse this may not be possible due to antennas not being linked however I believe the Nike+ app uses FM? Also there were rumours that Apple were looking at an FM radio app back in Oct 2009 that would allow current song purchasing so hopefully the hardware is already there for 3G Ipods.

Can only dream!

Radio!

Make a radio app!!!

Apparently all iPhones have AM/FM tuners in their hardware, there's just no software.

Make it work like on the old iPod nanos, it'd be great!

Useful in emergency situations, and why stream local stations over 3G at all?

Free Mobile Me would be fantastic as well. :)

Cheers,

DCBass

Imagine this for your new notification system. The task bar becomes like HP webOS or droid; that's not the shocker. The real deal is that the app with a notification will display a count of new notifications. Hold down on the app, and a drawer opens up with icons displaying a preview of the message. Press specific preview, app opens to that message. Drag icon to "trash" area, messahe erases. No need to enter area. Thoughts?

For those that can't wait til iOS5 is announced, I've got some insider info. iOS5 will be essentially the same as iOS4 to match the new iPhone that is essentially the same as the iPhone 4.

Agreed!

Hmmmmm.........now do I
1) Buy a iPad2 this Friday and hope for the best with iOS5
2) Wait for the Xoom to drop at Sams Club for $539 (Wi-Fi) Version.
3) Wait for iOS5 to be announced so I can compare that with Android3.0!

Buy an iPad 2 as soon as you want it, enjoy it for 3 months with iOS 4.3, update it to iOS 5 in June!

IMO the Xoom is overrated if you've seen it in person. It's NOWHERE near the polish of an iPad. It's heavier, thicker, less responsive, the UI feels like a beta test. I was impressed by the Honeycomb video demos, but was underwhelmed with my hands-on. I'd rather use an iPad 2 with the "old" OS than Xoom with its "next gen" OS.

The biggest reason:
iPad: 60,00 apps
Honeycomb: 100 apps

I have no idea what improvements can be made from iOS 4 (besides notifications).. so I'm excited! =D

MobileMe.. Well I hope some great things are in store! =)

I never heard of that before... if they have the FM on the chip.. I would love to see that. WOAH!

Looking forward to "The Lion's Den" regarding iOS 5 and MobileMe revamp. Why does mobileme seem like a glamorized email provider and that's it. Sure they have Find My iPhone/iPad, but for the money they aren't providing everything I need...:(

I disagree. MobileMe does more than wireless syncing of personal data over AT&T's network.

1. iDisk
- Automatic iDisk syncing of documents (10 GB's, additional available)
- Available online from any system, PC/Mac - cloud storage
- iDisk also accessible through free iPhone/iPad iDisk app
2. iWeb - WYSIWYG
- iWeb - allows average consumers to create websites hosted by Apple
- Hosting/masking - move or create a domain name through domain
providers such as Network Solutions to your MobileMe account.
Ex. I have had small business clients cut costs by FTP'ing their site
through their MobileMe account by masking/forwarding their domain
- Upload Flash swf files via iWeb FTP or HTML clipping, google maps integration, drag and drop
iPhoto photographs into iWeb, music, movies, etc.
3. iPhoto - Publish photographs online
- Instead of sending large photographs via email or shrinking photo's thus
impairing print quality, publish an album (and include a password for security if needed).
Your friends can visit the emailed link, download full sized photo's from the album to print or
keep
Allow your friends to upload photographs to your published album/event
- Create inexpensive greeting cards, hard covered books and calendars with your own photographs
in custom templates (a photographer friend did a photo-shoot of a friends newborn twins and
created a customized baby book)
- Organize your pictures: unlike other programs, your photographs are organized by events/albums
and tagged with friends and places if the camera has GPS tracking. Allows publishing/sharing
photographs on Facebook, MobileMe, Flicker, etc. Keeps pics with names such as image_xxx.jpg
from cluttering up your folders and allows for easy drag and drop creations of greeting cards, etc.
4. iCal
- Sharing of calendars between friends, groups and event invitations
- Syncing through Macs/Windows systems, iDevices and full access via MobileMe.com
- Notifications of appointments/events to yourself and invited/shared friends/guests
5. Mail
- Create as many aliases via MobileMe. Allows for multiple email names/aliases to be sent to your
MobileMe account. Create a work alias address then use "Smart Folders" or create rules to
send/organize aliases into proper folders
- HTML or TEXT mail interface
- Drag and drop attachments and photographs (can choose size of photograph attachments)
- Create folders on MobileMe servers - this allows for accessing email documents on all registered
iDevices or online at MobileMe.com. I have all my email stored on MobileMe.com, not on my
Mac Pro, thus I automatically have access to my mail from any where.
- Note syncing to your iDevices and other computers
6. Back to my Mac:
- Login to your MobileMe account to Screen share or access other registered and configured Mac's from
other systems
- Screen Share with friends or clients to work on projects or fix/diagnose system issues
- Access stored files on your system not uploaded to your iDisk
7. Time Capsule
- Access files on your Time Capsule HDD through your MobileMe account

I could go on and on, but the notion that MobileMe is just an overpriced syncing service is erroneous. For $99/year (and $69 in some cases) you get quite a lot of features. Sure, some users have experienced syncing issues but most don't realize that option clicking on the MobileMe menubar icon allows for MobileMe diagnostics and resetting services which fixes most issues. It's often to read complaints than positive reviews, and I have had little if any negative experiences with many regarding .Mac and MobileMe (aside from Windows Office integration, which is a Windows OS issue that Apple needs to work to remedy).

I have no idea what improvements can be made from iOS 4

Whilst I kind of agree (I'm not in the mobile phone business so can't hope to do the job better than those who are), there is SO MUCH they could do to improve iOS other than notifications.

For a start, the incredibly annoying and messy tiled interface.

This is what I keep pointing out to those who are underwhelmed by the iPad 2--we've only seen half of it so far. The other half is the new version of iOS. Seems sort of obvious to me, but it's amazing to me how many tech writers out there are looking at the iPad 2 and saying, "That's it?"

I would settle for just wireless syncing over WiFi. I can't think of much else I really really need iOS to do that seems logical right now. I'd love for Apple to build an app for my Samsung TV, but I figure Apple wants that darn AppleTV box to sell.

I just got an email from a close friend of mine and she said: "I hear from a reliable source that Apple's vision for the future of iOS is to be more and more like Android. Dashboard from OS X will be the basis for the homescreens, much like widgets on Android, and notifications will mimic Android also."

So, could this be coming in iOS 5? Sounds interesting.

i never thought the notifications were bad until i seen everyone here bitching about them. So i decided to look at the jailbreak options/android. Hell they're alot better!

iOS5 needs
- better notifications.
- personalised message sounds
- live apps/widgets
- a "home screen" not just a page full of apps/folders

I know! I was surprised how many people actually thought they would be previewing iOS 5 with the iPad 2 . People get so wrapped up in crazy rumors it amazing.
whenever iOS hits after the iPhone 5 release (hopefully around that time), we will see the full vision of what iPad 2 is about. I'm excited as the hardware seems molre than capable of delivering alot

Well, I don't have much hope in apple's online service.. If it is free, it will be even worse :)

Reading the reviews of the WebOS and Android Notification systems for all their goodness it seems there is still one area that Apple or someone else could still leap frog them in terms of a functional system. I hope Apple do it would be good if they do not just play catch up but convince us they've used the time to come up with something cool.

It seems none of the systems really thing about how important a notification is?

They all get the same rank and are ordered based just on time. So Notes that just aren't important to me now get in the way of stuff that is. Yes I know apples current system does really badly in this regard.
I also don't like the idea that I'd have to delete a note. It would be good if we can but generally should take care of itself.

So say All notification are in Listview that dropped out of the status bar. Then the first one to appear and end up closest to the bottom and most accessible part of the screen should be the most important. Yes I should be able to reorder what's more important to me in setting but that should be to fine tune the system which should get reasonably close by itself. It should be something we can do also note by note, so set a time to deal with it or just push stuff to say the train ride home from work.

Notes should have more time info in them. So a note isn't just about when it was added but have say a TimeToLive value so a bit of info that is only informative for a time period would keep itself visible for that period then start to drift up the list as more valuable info comes in. So a FaceBook Note might come in low on the list but within 10mins it's drifting up the list.

Similarly Notes should be able to set a CriticalTime, So they might get push off by more critical things but would re-assert themselves as they get closer to the time they are important. So a calendar item for a meeting in the afternoon could be added to the list at the start of the day and would float around the list based on the priority of other items coming in but say 30mins out from travel time set it would comeback and be item number one.

Those would be my thoughts.
