Looking forward to "The Lion's Den" regarding iOS 5 and MobileMe revamp. Why does mobileme seem like a glamorized email provider and that's it. Sure they have Find My iPhone/iPad, but for the money they aren't providing everything I need...
I disagree. MobileMe does more than wireless syncing of personal data over AT&T's network.
1. iDisk
- Automatic iDisk syncing of documents (10 GB's, additional available)
- Available online from any system, PC/Mac - cloud storage
- iDisk also accessible through free iPhone/iPad iDisk app
2. iWeb - WYSIWYG
- iWeb - allows average consumers to create websites hosted by Apple
- Hosting/masking - move or create a domain name through domain
providers such as Network Solutions to your MobileMe account.
Ex. I have had small business clients cut costs by FTP'ing their site
through their MobileMe account by masking/forwarding their domain
- Upload Flash swf files via iWeb FTP or HTML clipping, google maps integration, drag and drop
iPhoto photographs into iWeb, music, movies, etc.
3. iPhoto - Publish photographs online
- Instead of sending large photographs via email or shrinking photo's thus
impairing print quality, publish an album (and include a password for security if needed).
Your friends can visit the emailed link, download full sized photo's from the album to print or
keep
Allow your friends to upload photographs to your published album/event
- Create inexpensive greeting cards, hard covered books and calendars with your own photographs
in custom templates (a photographer friend did a photo-shoot of a friends newborn twins and
created a customized baby book)
- Organize your pictures: unlike other programs, your photographs are organized by events/albums
and tagged with friends and places if the camera has GPS tracking. Allows publishing/sharing
photographs on Facebook, MobileMe, Flicker, etc. Keeps pics with names such as image_xxx.jpg
from cluttering up your folders and allows for easy drag and drop creations of greeting cards, etc.
4. iCal
- Sharing of calendars between friends, groups and event invitations
- Syncing through Macs/Windows systems, iDevices and full access via MobileMe.com
- Notifications of appointments/events to yourself and invited/shared friends/guests
5. Mail
- Create as many aliases via MobileMe. Allows for multiple email names/aliases to be sent to your
MobileMe account. Create a work alias address then use "Smart Folders" or create rules to
send/organize aliases into proper folders
- HTML or TEXT mail interface
- Drag and drop attachments and photographs (can choose size of photograph attachments)
- Create folders on MobileMe servers - this allows for accessing email documents on all registered
iDevices or online at MobileMe.com. I have all my email stored on MobileMe.com, not on my
Mac Pro, thus I automatically have access to my mail from any where.
- Note syncing to your iDevices and other computers
6. Back to my Mac:
- Login to your MobileMe account to Screen share or access other registered and configured Mac's from
other systems
- Screen Share with friends or clients to work on projects or fix/diagnose system issues
- Access stored files on your system not uploaded to your iDisk
7. Time Capsule
- Access files on your Time Capsule HDD through your MobileMe account
I could go on and on, but the notion that MobileMe is just an overpriced syncing service is erroneous. For $99/year (and $69 in some cases) you get quite a lot of features. Sure, some users have experienced syncing issues but most don't realize that option clicking on the MobileMe menubar icon allows for MobileMe diagnostics and resetting services which fixes most issues. It's often to read complaints than positive reviews, and I have had little if any negative experiences with many regarding .Mac and MobileMe (aside from Windows Office integration, which is a Windows OS issue that Apple needs to work to remedy).
