Might be wrong here but do the latest gen SSD's still need TRIM? Meanwhile idle time garbadge colection is so well optimized that for example anything based on a Sandforce controller seems to work perfect with OSX.

Absolutely need TRIM ? No. However, it is a "nice to have" when processing tons of I/O and don't have much idle time and a limited over provisioning budget. So mainstream need? no. Very high performance and usage yes.

TRIM is no where near the panacea that folks were trying to make it out to be 1-2 years ago. It also doesn't work if drive is behind a controller on a non SATA bus. (e.g, on USB 3.0 , RAID controller , Light peak , etc. ). Any vendor who is leveraging TRIM as their primary 'free list' expansion mechanism is severely misguided. Don't buy from them.

Need TRIM so that support wider variety of SSD drives? Apple doesn't really support them now. Not sure why they would be eager to even remotely encourage folks to stuff a wider variety of them into their boxes.

If Apple isn't going to roll out a significantly better file system then TRIM is something useful to incrementally add to the old one to make it have marginally more utility/value.

It's all good saying new notebook hardware, but what can they do apart from minor speed bumps?

Sandy Bridge isn't out yet, 13" still has C2D but if it had i3 then it wouldn't have integrated graphics and the 15" and 17" go up to i7 processors with SSDs. And a redesign is off the cards in my opinion, the design is perfect right now and if you've ever taken apart and MBP then you'll see that it is jam packed with stuff.

The only possible ability to slim down the MBP would be by removing the disc drive. But then much functionality will be lost.

A new MBA is very likely though, needs a multitouch trackpad!

Here's a funny.

Damn, I just brought a new macbook pro this week on the online apple store, said it would be 3 days shipping. When I got the order details, it said that the estimated dispatch date is 20th October.

Do you think i'll get the new macbook refresh (if it gets released) or should I cancel my order?

if Apple automatically bumped your ship date back because of an upgrade then they have already incorporated the bump in. If you order within week of an upgrade they will bump you up to the new model with restocking fee if you call in and make it an issue. If they have not given it to you yet, they avoid the restocking fee by just shipping it "late".

If this is a parts supply hiccup and no product update ... again no difference or reasoning to push yourself farther back into the queue.

I agree with most of this post, except two things:

1) 13'' would have integrated graphics, but they'd be from Intel. Which, well, suck. SBridge's IGP shows some promise, but it's not even out yet.

2) Maybe a logic board redesign could provide space for iX + Intel's Waste-of-Space-pseudo-GPU + dedicated GPU without removing the ODD?

Im just praying its not an iOS for Mac rendition. OSX is the only reason I own a Mac. Its brilliant.

Right on...OSX is the crown jewel in every Mac; I am sure SJ would not disregard that, even if the iOS compatibility layer is forthcoming. Main reason? To multiply access to good software, expand user base even more and cement Apple's dominance in the personal device market.

I know lol, its because they have long gaps between spec bumps and refreshes. For example Sony refresh the vaio lines every 3 months, so whenever you buy a vaio, you know it's gonna be replaced (by the tiniest spec change) within 12 weeks.

Yup, i have a 2.66 i7 mbp. if there is any type of mbp refresh im going to feel like mine is inadequate lol

This could be the last version of Mac OS 10. We're out of "big" cats. This quote sums it up pretty well:
If Apple sticks with the "big cats" theme, then 10.7 will the last of the dot releases of OS X. There are only 7 big cats, unless you count the various leopards separately (but somehow the distinction between the Neofelis nebulosa and the Neofelis diardi may be too fine).
The big cats are:
Tiger, Panthera tigris (Asia)
Lion, Panthera leo (Africa, Gir Forest in India; extinct in former range of southeast Europe, Middle East, much of Asia, and North America)
Jaguar, Panthera onca (the Americas; from the Southern United States and Mexico to northern Argentina)
Cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus (Africa and Iran; extinct in former range of India)
Cougar, Puma concolor (North and South America)
Leopards
Snow Leopard, Uncia uncia (mountains of central and south Asia)
Leopard, Panthera pardus (Asia and Africa)
Bornean Clouded Leopard, Neofelis diardi (Borneo and Sumatra)
Clouded Leopard, Neofelis nebulosa (southeast and south Asia)
Thanks to klubar via /. for the quote.

I think I finally I had enough of this forum...

I think I finally I had enough of this forum...
Apple finally appear to be do something interesting with the Mac rather than the iPhone or iPad and half the comments on here are inane people posting cat names.

OMFG: Tabby cat!!!!!!, what? LOL! LIGER!
Geez, what a waste of time

Then don't read it?

2) Maybe a logic board redesign could provide space for iX + Intel's Waste-of-Space-pseudo-GPU + dedicated GPU without removing the ODD?

Unless they shipped that redisgn to the Gallifrey TARDIS design bureau , there is no room for that in that in a 13". it is not as much the previous design wasted gobs of space ( it doesn't at all ), but that you also need an additional fan. If drop the ODD to add discrete GPU in it is as much to add the extra fan as it is space for the discrete GPU and the additional VRAM.
If keep the ODD no way getting another significant fan in there.

I wouldn't be surprised if the laptops didn't to more of a 12 month product cycle. That there will be no updates until 2012.
Much of the "less than 12 month" churn you see on the WinPC side of the house these days is driven far more because the sysetm vendors have "two dozen" system models that are not well differentiated than Intel/AMD shipping new parts. Intel/AMD are moving to 12 month too.

For the MBA .... perhaps they have radically changed the size and/or the CPU (AMD Zacate) .. hence the Fall update.
However, that doesn't mean the updates for the rest are coming also.

My guess?

Probably the same as everyone else. (I'm not reading through all these pages :p)

-Introduction of 10.7 with "Lion" moniker is likely -- actual release at least 6mo-1yr from now
-Release of 10.6.5 (its been in dev seeds for weeks now)
-New notebooks, specifically the Air

Can't wait. Enough of the iPad, iPhone talk. The Mac is the reason why I got into Apple.

But I just want a new iLife and OS. I love when Jobs shows OS previews.

AGREED! Love the iDevices, and wanted to hear about nothing else for a while. But I'm now growing tired of it and it has begun to tarnish Apple's image a bit in my eyes - like they are more of a novelty toy rather than computer company. The 'Wow that's amazing' factor of the beautiful glass touchscreens and app possibilities have become the status quo. Especially after the iPad keynote which was had an uncanny resemblence to the original iPhone keynote. We need something more substantial now.

Plus, I'm in the market for a MacBook Pro. After I get it, this year I will have bought at least one item from every product line Apple offers.

Scary.

Please…for the love of Finder, could Finder get a little love! Really nothing major…just a few tweaks here and there.

More GUI consistency between application functionality and look…OS enforced?...with at least 2 options…the current brushed metal/aqua and whatever some apps are evolving into…marble?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

I'm feeling 10.7 velociraptor

Maybe they will begin to merge the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines. Aiming for power in a slimmer, lighter form factor.

Leopard was Apple's Vista? Wow. Little bit of an overstatement there, right? Leopard was rock-solid for me, and Snow Leopard has even improved somewhat on that. Tiger was the best release at it's time (though it took until about 10.4.6 to get things really nailed down), but compared to Panther and Jaguar, that wasn't saying much. I guess people tend to forget history…

jW

Rock solid for me as well, as is SL. If they wanna talk about "rushed" they should mention 10.0, which was really something to start the transition from OS 9...everything else was steadily better, especially from 10.2 upwards.

Could the turning :apple: logo stand for a MacBook Air with a swivel screen (that turns into something like the iPad)?

Maybe the possibility to incorporate the new GTX 400m series graphics card for the MBP? Other than that there really is no room for an upgrade except speed bump. (But 400m are released only a month ago, doubt Apple will have time to mass produce notebooks with the new chips.)
