What If...
...this next release was based heavily on buying the "Best of" replacement utilities & applications to become the new versions of core apps in OS X? For example, buy out the best replacement option for iCal (back to one click to do something please!), best replacement for font book (a great font management application), and so on.
10.7 could be a "best of" developer-driven upgrade making even modest features & benefits maxed out by atypical, innovative replacements. If the Apple insiders have been overly focused on iOS, this would be a way to bring "wow" in tons of features without having to lean too heavily on the internal teams. Then, instead of replacing this Apple feature or that, we just get the Apple endorsed replacements across the board. Apple could even select the winners, then charge the developers to work in tandem with Apple to fully grand central, etc them.
There's so much great stuff out there created by Apple developers that out Apples, Apple. They might get the idea from Apple, but then they see a way(s) to implement it a lot better. Some of us discover these alternatives and install them for ourselves, but the majority never get to see how much better they can be.
Apple has seen tremendous success with the apps model on the iDevice side. They could borrow from that by encouraging developers to submit their potential replacements for DVD player, Preview, Time Machine, Spotlight, font book, and so on... then buy out those they like, unify their UI's to be max compatible with any new UI elements of 10.7, and roll out "loaded" wow features driven by the developer community.
If nothing else, that could get us to 10.7 sooner than later, depending on how much has been focused on it inside Apple.
