New notebook hardware is implied by the aluminum.

What current mac is NOT aluminum?

The only thing that left that is not aluminum is the Macbook ( a laptop). Aluminum is more uniform across the non laptop product lines than the laptop lines at this point.

Aluminum means "Mac" at this point; all of them. (the Macbook will likely go metal also in next update... which will probably be next Spring. It could happen now to make it deliberate 'all metal' statement, but that is kind of silly. However, perhaps Apple wants to make a very big deal over their commitment to 'metal' and forging/process that will be aimed at all macs eventually. )

10.7 Lion has to have multi touch features

I think that invite picture says it all...I see a collusion between OS X and IOS.

My guess:updated 13 inch mbp chip. Maybe up the cpu speeds in the rest. OSX update. Hopefully. I doubt touch will be initiated in the line.
Thankfully I just bought my 15" mbp at bestbuy two days ago so I will fall within the 14 day return policy if it deems I wait for the new line up.

Ta da... some very ropey photoshop by me....

Apple better give me Mac OS X Lion as not even 2 weeks ago I bought SL! They better upgrade me

Why? Even if announced next week it will not ship until 12+ months from then. It will be an announcement of what they are going to do and what have given developers early access to .... not what they are about to ship.

In the 12+ months before you can get this you will have gotten your moneys worth out of SL.

Mac Pro laptops are made of aluminium, and what is behind the aluminium? The guts of the computer, hardware and software, hence the Lion referencing the SO.

the rounded corners suggest a magic trackpad. touch based osx?

And everyone was saying for the past 7-9 months that Apple was going to abandon the Mac platform in favor of ioS, which i thought was just wrong and people over reacting. The reason the iPad was touted so much is because it was in the moment, same with the iPhone 4. Now that those are out of the way, they can get back to focusing on Macs, and 10.7

I think I finally I had enough of this forum...
Apple finally appear to be do something interesting with the Mac rather than the iPhone or iPad and half the comments on here are inane people posting cat names.

OMFG: Tabby cat!!!!!!, what? LOL! LIGER!
Geez, what a waste of time

Ironic, considering your username.... :p

Im just praying its not an iOS for Mac rendition. OSX is the only reason I own a Mac. Its brilliant.

I don't understand your comment. iOS is built off the Mac OS and I'm not just referring to "OS X". The UI of the iOS is built straight from the OS X desktop down to the Dock. If anything it would be a nice compliment if Apple infused the UI look and feel of OS X and iOS together for the next version of Mac OS.

MacBooks are not going to go metal, unless you want to carry around a much heavier MacBook that dissipates heat poorly. Liquid Metal is being developed for portable products because it retains its finish far better than traditional material and liquid metal is very difficult to damage.

Aluminum dissipates heat well and is relatively light, making it far more suited to machine that generate heat and/or need to be carried around.

Didn't MacBook pro get a refresh in summer or just before. I hope it's not bring updated as I just bought last month a 13 inch one.

I could see the Air being changed. And new os or software.

Spoiler alert:

New desktops will run iOS, not support Flash, and require all apps to be purchased from iTunes store. ;)

I'm not sure how much sense (hardware-wise) a MacBook Pro update would be during this event, since it's too early for Sandy Bridge, which is a quarter away. The only way I see it making sense is if they're releasing a minor update next week and then a major update with Llano in the middle of next year. Or if Apple doesn't want to use Sandy Bridge for whatever reason.

MacBook Air update makes more sense although LV Arrandales were released a while ago. Next week might be too early even for Zacate, but it could be just an MBA announcement.

I would think there would be a preview of some sort of 10.7, and that plus any new, redesigned, or significantly bumped notebook would be the focus of the event.

And iLife/iWork '11, if they are announced (likely).

What If...

...this next release was based heavily on buying the "Best of" replacement utilities & applications to become the new versions of core apps in OS X? For example, buy out the best replacement option for iCal (back to one click to do something please!), best replacement for font book (a great font management application), and so on.

10.7 could be a "best of" developer-driven upgrade making even modest features & benefits maxed out by atypical, innovative replacements. If the Apple insiders have been overly focused on iOS, this would be a way to bring "wow" in tons of features without having to lean too heavily on the internal teams. Then, instead of replacing this Apple feature or that, we just get the Apple endorsed replacements across the board. Apple could even select the winners, then charge the developers to work in tandem with Apple to fully grand central, etc them.

There's so much great stuff out there created by Apple developers that out Apples, Apple. They might get the idea from Apple, but then they see a way(s) to implement it a lot better. Some of us discover these alternatives and install them for ourselves, but the majority never get to see how much better they can be.

Apple has seen tremendous success with the apps model on the iDevice side. They could borrow from that by encouraging developers to submit their potential replacements for DVD player, Preview, Time Machine, Spotlight, font book, and so on... then buy out those they like, unify their UI's to be max compatible with any new UI elements of 10.7, and roll out "loaded" wow features driven by the developer community.

If nothing else, that could get us to 10.7 sooner than later, depending on how much has been focused on it inside Apple.
