Somehow, using 'Lion' after using the names if much cooler cats (Leopard, Snow Leopard) seems almost anit-climactic. :D

My guesses :

- toss scrollbars
- for those that want it have a single focus App fills-screen-mode.
- way more cloud
- more cinematic in the GUI. Pump up the graphic flourishes a bit.
- apps that borrow from iOS. So notepad, calendar, etc are themed. They have a metephored identity.
- get rid of menu bar. In the age of the trackpad fitts law is dead, drag it out back and shoot it. Instead with a gesture or hot spot menu options should fill the screen :

This would also allow excellent access from an iOS device Back to the Mac. You could actually control it with your fingers.

What all big cats are left besides Cougar?
None, and technically the cougar isn't even one of them.

Wikipedia said:
Despite [the cougars] size, it is not typically classified among the "big cats", as it cannot roar, lacking the specialized larynx and hyoid apparatus of Panthera.[25] Like domestic cats, cougars vocalize low-pitched hisses, growls, and purrs, as well as chirps and whistles.

cat motif seriously played out; os revisions also a bit played out.
i like osX, but i use windows xp on my 17" mbp. there is really nothing
interesting in windows 7 or snow leapard

Panther would be my guess for next after Lion.
that made me laugh so much, all those posts on the new "Panter", "Cheeta", etc name... guys, you better do your homework next time :D

"it's only, like, my favorite animal ever."

good ol' Napoleon Dynamite :D

:D

Beat me to the punch with Liger but don't forget its equally impressive counterpart, the Tigon.

Finally, some good news! Is that an Apple-made invitation graphic I see? If it is, then it HAS to be lion no doubt. Sneak peak at this event, then release for next year? Mmm dunno.

that would be my guess.
checking the prev. releases of OSX, (except for 10.1 and 10.6) they all were release at about a 1.2 to 1.5Y pace.

Snow Leopard being released on August 28, 2009; I would say the next release will be March 2011, however since the SL was only an "under-the-hood" upgrade, a sooner release could be expected.

I'm so looking forward to this, however besides an overhaul GUI redesign, i have no idea what to expect of it. I would like to see a fully Black/White Dock-option styled GUI...

Apple event on the 20th.. When will the updates be in store?

Hi all,

Just a quick question. So the up coming media event publicised today is set for the 20th of October.

From past events can we judge when we will actually be able to buy these potential updated macbooks?

Is it normally the day after?

Cheers

most likely you can order immediately after the event in the online store and get it from a retail store within a few days. But sometimes it does take longer so we wont know for sure until they say at the event.

Whatever it is they're doing, I hope they give us an easy day to change default system font sizes, like the Windows ''large fonts'' setting.

That would be a huge help to us old people on these great high res screens.

Unless it's something major, they should ship in 24 hours or within couple of days. Stores should have them in couple of days, depends on your location. There is no guarantee of updated MacBook (Pros) though.

I have a very strong feeling the MacBookAir will be the first laptop to introduce
multitouch keyboard therefore reducing the size dramatically by eliminating physical keys and paving way to multi-touch mac. The whole decade will be dedicated to multi-touch and mobility.

No wonder big name software developers like Autodesk already announced their version of multitouch autocad.

I'm hoping for a visually tweaked UI. Wonder if that "marble" interface will make an appearance, lol. :D I'm just hoping for some really neat features, some innovative programs and new MacBooks would be nice too. As for MacBooks (if they even talk about them), I wouldn't be surprised if they no longer have DVD Drives, and instead have a slimmer profile with a larger battery instead. Apple could do some SERIOUS damage to the competition if they came out with 12-hour+ battery life MacBooks. That would be the kind of "wow" factor that I would be looking for.

We'll just have to wait and see. This kind of popped out of nowhere, which is good. I like it when Apple does something that isn't rumored for months beforehand.

I'm REALLY hoping for a "...one more thing."

There has been so much iOS related talk and events lately, that Apple wants to draw our attention to the Mac again. And don't expect Scott Forstall to show up (he's there alright, but he won't enter the stage) so that is why they called it: "Back to the Mac". And it's about freaking time too isn't it.

New versions of iLife, iWorks in the stores and OS X 10.6.5 is available for download, today. We'll also get a date for 10.7 in (late) November.

Steve Jobs talks about the success of the iPad, iPhone and makes a Facetime call to Jonathan Ive (from England) from the Mac. Woohoo. Oh and there will be a new update to iTunes also; adding more bloat err features ;)

Philip W. Schiller (demo's iWorks /iLife) and Bertrand Serlet talks about OS X.

Back to Steve with the usual oh and one more thing. Pulls out the new Air. Stunning. Video with Bob Mansfield who talks about the new MacBook Air with... wait. What is that? A touch pad keyboard?!? SOLD

Nah. It has to run iOS for that. Or maybe not :D

No. Just No.

Keep the iOS on iToys. Seriously, why should I waste half the pixels of my screen to the menu bar when sitting on top takes less than 5% real estate ?

That idea is terrible. When working on a multi-windowed system, screen real estate should be reserved to content, not to controls.

Great ideas if you want to kill the Mac as a product and reduce Apple's revenue by about 30%. Ugh.

Could you elaborate on what exactly you mean here ? What is missing from HFS+ that requires a whole new filesystem ?

Cut - Paste. Although, that doesn't require a whole new filesystem as much as a whole new CEO.

Yeah, put iOS on the Dashboard or something like that.

Why isn't anyone talking about the rumoured 12" form factor? That would be a welcome return, I'd dump my 13" MBP in a second for one of those if they spec it the same, without the optical drive. I can see it replacing the MBA, which sucks as a design and probably didn't sell that well comparatively.
