Why did Tim Cook just sell a bunch of his shares couple last weeks ago if he knew this was coming?

He received restricted stock worth $583 million last year, and that is now worth almost $900 million. $11 million is a drop in the bucket.

I would like the dividend but we know how Jobs felt about giving away money.

oh the possibilities ... take up some more of the pc market.

I'm for discounts and new products!

Buy a country?

They should buy mines in multiple countries to secure access to rare earth materials. That is one finite resource that they need to lock up for the long-term.

Use the money to introduce a couple of more products: a 4.5 inch iPhone and a 7 inch iPad, so people have more choices

Ok, wishful thinking here. But I would dump my terribly buggy Android for smooth and reliable iPhone if it had a big screen

New dividend

The stock will need some repair after the new iPad. Cook would be nuts to start buying back the stock at $575.

Apple will probably give e a dividend to shareholders of record 3/16/2012.

We could but dream.

17 years is long overdue, it's time to start paying those who hold stock a dividend once again. Even a small token gesture would be an improvement than what happened under Jobs. At the time he had a point, but once the iPod took off he should have returned the company to paying a dividend. It shouldn't have needed a change in CEO for this to even be considered.

They are buying T-Mobile.

They should build a space elevator or something that furthers the advancement of the human race.

I can’t be the only member who wondered why Apple doesn’t own the whole experience (including the carrier/cell sites).

Biggest problem? They can’t own a carrier in every country, let alone a couple without upsetting the other carrier partners.

Being a cellular carrier is capital-intensive. First of all, you need to spend billions of dollars just to get licensing rights to use the spectrum. Then you have to build towers and base stations, upgrade them every decade or so when a new generation of wireless technology takes hold, and spend billions in between just keeping them up to date.

Apple is NOT a capital-intensive business. They need to spend a lot on product design and marketing, but they outsource manufacturing. That is a big reason why they have amassed a huge cash stockpile. They make a lot of profits, but don't need to reinvest a lot to keep the lights on.

Maybe they'll make a large donation to charity.
Doubt it. SJ was never into charity - he could have helped a lot with some large donations for pancreatic cancer research.
I have to give a friend and former co-worker the credit for this because he had the idea years ago, but now it makes sense. Considering they are in bankruptcy, Apple should buy Kodak.
Kodak can likely be bought for 2-3 Billion easy. Then what? FWIW, Apple would need to address this even if Steve was still alive and CEO. Problem is, most of that cash is offshore, there will be hell to pay (taxes) when brought back in, if that is part of the plan.

Like who? What large company could they possibly acquire without it being blocked by the DOJ? And they're philosophically opposed to adding non-Apple culture into the company. By which I mean non-Apple employees.

They could buy Yahoo... And make it the default iOS and OSX search engine and web ad network.

I hope they do not start paying a dividend. I have apple stock and I would rather they put the money into R&D, Server Farms, School Discount Programs, and new tech acquisitions. Apple Investors do not need anymore money. The stock has been so butter golden.

Ugh I hope it's not dividends. They're such a bore and show a subservience to large investors. Dividends rarely result in an equitable rise in stock prices.

I feel like there would be a rumor or two if it was a large company. Maybe some smaller companies or startups related to where they think they're going.

Also a large purchase of Kodak would be pricey relative to value. Repatriation taxes would kind of burn any potential profit from a purchase (unless they see some serious growth from the company).

It'll most likely be a dividend, but I'll hold out some hope for a super fun purchase.

If it's a big enough purchase you keep it quiet until you're ready to announce it. Look at Motorola-Google. That was kept quiet until the end.
