I'm just going to put it out there.... The F-35 Lightning II program is in the order of $200bil... Maybe they're going to design a lighter weight fighter to take on Samsung's Battleship subsidiary?

Would anyone care to explain to me why Apple should give shareholders a dividend? I don't understand how it would benefit Apple.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

They should lower the prices of their products :)

They should call the iStopSellingMyProductsAt599or799ForTheMoreExpensiveKind 2

What makes you say that?

The DOJ let Google buy DoubleClick and AdMob.

Not the same thing, there is still competition in advertising. If Apple bought Microsoft they could go to all major OEMs and say we're charging $500 for all windows licenses so they would have to a) use linux or b) raise their prices significantly to make even the cheapest laptops be more expensive then their Mac counterparts. Either way the market share of all non Mac computers would drop almost instantly.

To encourage more people to buy apple stock, thereby giving them more financing. Also you want to please the shareholders as they have a say in who's on the board of directors, etc.

Somebody pointed this out already I think, but the announcement is timed for 30 minutes before the opening of the markets in New York. This timing alone tells us that a dividend is almost certainly a part of the package and the rate will be based on Friday's closing price.

I'd shy away from dividends and these are my picks;

1/ Buy Greece, set up a new Apple campus there. Imagine an Apple store or campus adjacent to a Greek ruin. They could use the employment.

2/ Diversify into everything else. Step into the motor business, the bike business and just fund and replicate the Apple way. I can't begin to imagine a car designed from the ground up by Apple but I know it'd look good, handle well and I'd love it.

3/ Set up an Apple Charity. Not one where funds are sent out but where Apple programmes are created and supplied, where Apple staff can go on paid sabbaticals to provide water, education, housing to the less fortunate.

Maybe none of these will happen but what would it be like if they did.

Practically Apple is now in a position where their interest earn on this cash pile is getting to the point where they almost can't spend it. You have to admit they've played the game well. Just thought of 4/

4/ Apple Finance, financing companies and ideas as venture capitalists or for takeovers with a slice of the action.

Can you imagine the accelerated growth of this cash horde and where it will go if left as is. OMG 200, 300... 500, 1,000?

I am in awe.

Split the shares

my view is that they should do a 20 to 1 stock split to get the price far enough below $100 that it won't cross that barrier for a while and then also issue dividends. i know, i know, theoretically stock splits don't do anything, but average investors are not satisfied buying part of a share - it just isn't very satisfying. this would, practically, increase the population of potential stock buyers. the dividend would allow funds to buy apple that can't right now because it doesn't have a dividend. this would also increase the population of potential buyers. together this has two effects: reduce the effects of speculators and get the stock up towards where it really ought to be.

I'd love it if they would split stocks again and get the per unit price down to a more manageable level. Kicked my self in late 80's for not gambling when they were something like US$30 each (how stupid am I!!). Then a month ago I thought hmm $500 each - should grab some - again how stupid am I :eek:- who'd have thought $100 in a month.

Now split them even 6 to 1 and then revalue at $100 a piece I am in in a heart beat. I don't know 6 share @ $100 sounds better than 1 share @ $600. ;)

Then when I become a shareholder I'll be wanting dividends too but until then the current situation only favours the very luck and now well invested group who hold shares :)

Why does a company with $100b in the bank need to worry about financing? And shouldn't the stock holders be happy that the stock is soaring?

100b

If I were Apple I'd invest it in owning/developing manufacturing. Obviously it would probably be overseas, but That's what I'd do with it. Apple's big on top to bottom integration, and they'd be able to keep tighter tabs on leaks. Not only that, it would cut out the contracting costs in the far term. If you don't own your technology, someone else does.

BUT THAT'S JUST ME

But still, good idea.

About the first point they do not get financing from stocks traded nor will they unless they issue more stock. AFAIK the only dilution happening to shares are through option awarded to executives not through something such as a secondary offering.

The second part is more like it they want to avoid a proxy fight. Lastly most board members are also major shareholders so they too will get a great amount of money from the dividends.

I would love if they started their own network, Verizon and AT&T are such crooks.

I don't think they would do it until they were ready with everything. I'm no expert on the agreements between Apple and carriers but could you imagine the reaction from the carriers? They would lose a lot of business so they definitely wouldn't be happy.

I'm so rich, I don't care

Tim Cook just sold 20,178 shares of stock. If there's going to be a dividend, he'll be missing out on some extra green.
