Apple is must really desperate to sell its phone...

----------

6 months later and less than 10% of Android devices are running KitKat. If anyone needs to worry about getting people on the latest OS it's Google.

Yeah... By all the small trick Apple doing...no wonder iOS upgrade rate is such artificially high... Let people downgrade and stop forcing download updates files...oh fix the FaceTime

Not surprised here. Typical Apple. Getting customers to burn their upgrades on the 5s now, only to be forced into paying the much higher non-upgrade price for the 6 when it releases in October... I'll be sticking with my 5 and save my upgrade for the 5.5" iPhone 6.

haha why would anyone buy one now? Walmart offers it for free and you don't even have to trade in an iPhone and get the 5c for free. Target sometimes has it for free. I have seen the 5s for $80-120 bucks

Point is with all the cell phone companies getting rid of the subsidies why would anyone get a 8 month old phone when they can get the newest one or a Galaxy 5 if they really need to upgrade.

I have a 5 and I just became fully upgrade eligible. I like the 5s but there is no way I am going to buy one now and be locked in when the 6(?) is released sometime later this year.

I don't think anybody is forcing anybody. The 5s is already king of the hill in terms of premium smartphones. Is the 6 really going to be that much of an upgrade aside from a larger screen?

Paving the way

My hunch is that this is a way to clear stock out before the iPhone 6 that *may* be launched at WWDC. I think Apple is going to be getting closer to a 6-month release cycle and push it's "C" class product to October/November and it's "S" class to WWDC. Again, Apple wants to to differentiate the two lines and timing is essential for that differentiation.

I believe we will be seeing a 5.5" iPod touch media/gaming device this fall and a 4.7" 'S' class iPhone in about a month. That's my feeling...

So yes, clear out those iPhones Apple :)

Because sales of the 5s haven't been good enough already?

Everyone knows the 6 is coming out in a few months, and history shows that the old models see sales drops in the months before the launch. This is probably an attempt to drum up sales of those who have older models who are less likely to care that something better is coming soon.

What level of foolish do you have to be to buy into a soon to be obsolete device that will further be crippled by a forced iOS8 upgrade and virtually bricked in 2015 when iOS9 is forced upon it?

I guess I should throw my 2013 macbook air in the garbage in a few months because I certainly won't be able to use it when a new version comes out. And when the successor to Mavericks comes out? Forget it, there's no WAY a two year old computer could possibly run that.

I got a phone call from my local apple store where I sent my iPhone 5 for repairing the faulty power button for free . A guy from the store told me that they did fix the power button issue, but the sleep/wake feature on that button is still no working( I really don't understand what they fixed ). This guy suggested that I get a replacement iPhone 5 at $269. I wonder if this is part of that event.

They want to soak the crap out of folks with the 6 release just around the corner. I didn't expect this from apple

So KitKat is at less than 10% because Google allows downgrades? And when iOS 6 was at 93% at WWDC last year is that because Apple doesn't allow downgrades?

It seems to be all about the numbers now. The passion for great products is gone IMO.

Been desperate. Any time you walk into the store they bug you about iPhone. It's annoying. If I wanted one I would have purchased one by now. Common sense.

Not sure what store you go to but the stores here in the Minneapolis area don't.

$269 is the standard out-of-warranty-replacement cost for the iPhone 5. Anybody can walk in to an Apple Store with an iPhone 5 and buy a replacement for that amount. Unfortunately he is not cutting you any kind of deal.

My daughter has an off-contract iPhone 5 that is beginning to have problems (poor battery life, mute switch inoperative). I was going to wait until the 6 comes out and get her the 5S (or its equivalent) at a discounted price, but if there is a $100+ incentive on an iPhone 5S and I can buy it outright (no more contracts) I might jump.

Nice......push the upgrade now....then announce a new iPhone 6! iPhone sales must be a little slow.....

Awesome, I'm glad she's bringing some of the practices of higher end retail stores to Apple. Events are a great way to make numbers happen. It can be the difference between beating LY, or plan, or whatever numbers you are going against, or not.

They need to make stores bigger if they're going to add events. It's ridiculous how crowded Apple stores are. Adding a bunch of events will drive more traffic there, which will make crowding worse.

This makes zero sense. Who would upgrade their phone now and then again in
October? Apple isn't going after early adopters here. Not everyone has to have the latest and greatest phone the minute it comes out. And based on how many phones Apple sold last quarter not everybody needs/wants a bigger display.

But Apple announced record sales last quarter.

Oh, the 6 is out? Because unless I read wrong, and the 6 isn't out... Ima not upgrading anything.
