I have a 5 and I just became fully upgrade eligible. I like the 5s but there is no way I am going to buy one now and be locked in when the 6(?) is released sometime later this year.
Same here, why waste the upgrade for a better 5 when 6 is just around the corner!

Sell more? Get rid of stock for the 6?

That what I was thinking was part of it too. So they either made too may iPhones and have inventory to sell through. Or sales are down and they are afraid consumers are just waiting for the larger screen on the IP6.

Then why the fire sale? They are feeling pressure from their competitors.....

Fire sale? Where in the article does it say that?

But they reported record sales of 44M last quarter (up 17% YOY). What if this turns out to be no big deal and 9to5Mac got played (or are hyping this up for page views).

I wager they want to avoid drop off in this quarter.

Hold outs will start accumulating in summer, so Apple is smart to combat fence sitting or defection during the Apple new release lull.

The S5 pulled me over and I doubt I am alone.

What's next? They call you up at 6pm when you're eating diner with your family and hassle you to upgrade your phone?
Sounds like they're trying to offload 'soon to be outdated' hardware..... telemarketer style.

So they can't shift stock of the iphone 5 and we also read read the iphone 6 will be $100 more?

I've got a 4S, waiting for the 6.
Unless they wanna throw me a retina mini with the 5.. :)

Sales are extraordinarily strong for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c across all channels and markets. This is not an act of desperation. This is a sign of confidence and strength from Apple that they believe more consumers can benefit from the advanced technology in these incredible devices, and that they would like to offer them an assisted upgrade.

The result of upgrade events like this will only ensure Apple increases its already huge lead in the smartphone market.

.......<>.. CEO Tim Cook also noted in the conference call that Apple has started selling iPhone 4's in the "very, very low single digit percentage" and last year said...

Where are they selling the iPhone 4 models? I don't see them on the US site. Is this something specific to China/ India etc?

They want to soak the crap out of folks with the 6 release just around the corner. I didn't expect this from apple

:rolleyes:how dare Apple try to sell phones.

Some of the responses in this thread is beyond ridiculous.

This is a good strategy for Apple in clearing out inventory. It costs next to nothing for them to create this hype. You wouldn't believe how many people doesn't know about Apple's upgrade cycle... I know someone that just got an iPhone 4S two weeks ago just because it was free.

My crystal ball says apple will allow iPhone 5 owners to get a 5s for a $50 fee, the phone has to be in perfect working condition though.

Still loving my 4S. Got it when they released. Fits in my pocket, does email and SMS all day and evening, does maps, easy to read attached documents. Browses the web. Stores information. Powerful calculator. Syncs with my other devices seamlessly. And is a phone. Just ordered a wallet case for it.

I guess I should throw my 2013 macbook air in the garbage in a few months because I certainly won't be able to use it when a new version comes out. And when the successor to Mavericks comes out? Forget it, there's no WAY a two year old computer could possibly run that.

I was speaking specifically about the mobile devices where based on my continuous experience,it a one OS upgrade and done because the 2nd OS upgrade cripples the device.
I'm using a 5 year old MBP to respond here. Apple does not play the "roll out a crippling new OS and force you to upgrade" game with their laptops....yet.

very smart marketing

really smart marketing:

1. get as many people on iOS 7 as possible
2. get them into or keep them in the apple closed loop at a reasonable price
3. soak up as much channel inventory as possible prior to launch of iPhone 6
4. boost sales in a slow quarter (just before massive launches in sept/oct (since so so many people are waiting for the next version of iPhone)
5. appeal to budget priced consumers who won't be able to afford a new phone that is more expensive when the
iPhone 6 comes out (no need to offer a budget priced model (not apple to do this))
6. possibly foreshadows issues with iPhone 4s running iOS 8

iPhone 5 upgrade due to the sleep/wake button problem offering a highly incentivising price discount is a part of this same strategy

lastly, apple needs to find ways to pay for angela arendt's stock option package somehow
