Like most on here I'm probably going for a 6, assuming its not massive for my poor small hands. however my sister in law went to an iphone4s only a month ago as she wanted an iphone but couldn't justify the 5s cost. There's a few people I know who have done this; they use their phone predominantly as a phone and some web browsing. Whilst you could argue any smartphone would cope with their needs, they've gone with the brand, but the cheaper option. Not everyone hammers their phone like most on macrumours! Given iphone5s's are now getting a lot cheaper on contracts here in the UK, I'd wonder what they could offer here...

This makes sense. Get people in to Apple stores and they'll see all the other Apple products and hopefully/maybe pick up some. :) :apple:

My my, how clueless! There are NEVER "enough" products sold. There always needs to be more. There's nothing wrong with promotions--ever!

I wonder, if Samsung did this and someone responded that it was a sign of desperation, would you have been so vocal and stood up for Samsung?

Missing the point. It is to increase sales of iPhone IN THEIR STORES. You buy one at Verizon, you don't get to see the glory that is the rest of their ecosystem.

It isn't a concern of sluggish sales, or clearing inventory. It is getting people into the stores. Something Tim Cook mentioned nearly a year ago.

What level of foolish do you have to be to buy into a soon to be obsolete device that will further be crippled by a forced iOS8 upgrade and virtually bricked in 2015 when iOS9 is forced upon it?

In what world are you forced to upgrade your phone? I know plenty of people that are still running iOS 6 on iPhones and iPads.

----------

Not surprised here. Typical Apple. Getting customers to burn their upgrades on the 5s now, only to be forced into paying the much higher non-upgrade price for the 6 when it releases in October... I'll be sticking with my 5 and save my upgrade for the 5.5" iPhone 6.

Again there seems to be a lot of use of the word "force(d)". The consumer is in control. You don't have to buy a 5s just because Apple is having a promotion.

The people who are currently still using an iPhone 4s or earlier model, and who might find it advantageous to get, at a discount, a device that works and will work just fine, even though it's not released 5 minutes ago. That level of "foolish."

Right on!

@"Neepman"

My Mum loves her 3G S I got for £35 from eBay, and says she doesn't even want a 4/4S. If you call her foolish, then I wonder who the *real* fool is; someone who "upgrades" without need, or someone who generalises and calls the rest of the world "foolish" by default, for not aligning to their irrational sense of reasoning.

It's perfectly okay to buy the latest/greatest kit - noone can deny another of that pleasure, but to simultaneously couple that with a derisory sneer at the other folk who haven't, makes you the worst kind of snob.

Dude you're comparing a 5 > 5S upgrade to an outdated 3GS > 4S upgrade... Completely irrelevant and you might as well compare apples and oranges. Having a phone that's 5 generations old is a little foolish.

Calling a complete stranger's decision to own whatsoever they want "foolish", is actually far more foolish. Does it matter to you or affect you? My Dad owns a Nokia 3510i, and loves it because, like my Mum, it works FOR HIM. I'd have whatever was newest, because I demand more of my hardware than my parents who call/text/WhatsApp/check Gmail... and that IS ALL they do or care for.

Any more advice or meaningless judgements? :)

Nope - it's just rather obnoxious when people like yourself basically ask for attention by saying them or a family member uses an outdated phone. Did you really expect someone not to comment on it? To each his own, but don't say it's foolish to use an upgrade when you can basically get a newer phone for free. That's just begging for an argument and that's exactly what you did by replying to the guy's comment.

I invite you to stop observing and feeling a need to comment on what I say, thanks :)

Yeah right, June 2 and WWDC is how far away. Have iPhone 5 x2. Don't like the plastic crap that is most Android phones . Sticking with what I have won't buy another iPhone until it has a bigger screen size. That said I did look at Kit Kat based phone at it really popped vs an iPhone 5 OS7.1.

Lol, that's not an "option", that's carriers abandoning handsets once they're out of the door; at least the iPhone has the *choice* to upgrade to the next 2-3 OS versions.

Lol, what choice do the iphone users have ? Keep the slightly older OS and the phone starts to fall apart, facetime stops working, probably tomorrow the gps module and phone will stop next. Some choice !

It's at least 4 months away. And it doesn't look like there will be a lot of iPhone 6 devices ready due to the sapphire plants coming up to speed. When things are rushed, then you have to wait or worse return your phone for mistakes. So you could be waiting until December for inventory to catch up on iPhone 6.

Versus an iPhone 5s in your hand now that has most of the bugs shaken out because Apple has made tons of them.

Still got the 5 in my hand, the 5S wasn't enough of an upgrade to warrant an upgrade for me, i have no interest in the finger print scanner.

Now the larger screen 6 , if its true, is a worthy upgrade, but as my contract runs through too march next year, ill get to watch the early adopters run into the issues and hopefully see them fixed before i upgrade.

have to say im really looking forward to the larger screen.

So what was this all about? There were no leaks about the results of their meetings with retail staff. The most interesting thing was that apple was gearing up for new product launches.... that made it seem semi immediate which doesn't seem like the case.

Probably attempting to clear excess stock

Apple doesn't maintain excess stock to clear out, especially not after a record quarter. They have excellent supply chain management extending from Tim Cook's time as COO.

A more likely reason is that they got a new head of retail and this is part of her strategy to maximize sales.

I don't think you know what fire sale means.
So they are instructing all employees in over 300 stores to push the iphone and get product moving? Sounds like a fire sale to me......Carriers reducing the price.......Apple pushing employees to sell sell sell......But your right its not a true fire sale......

Thank you for confirming you have no clue what you're talking about.

From wikipedia:

A fire sale is the sale of goods at extremely discounted prices, typically when the seller faces bankruptcy or other impending distress. The term originated in reference to the sale of goods at a heavy discount due to fire damage.

From the source (9to5Mac):

Beginning May 8th, the source said, Apple will be contacting upgrade-eligible iPhone users with older iPhone models via email to come into their local Apple Store to update to a new iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c…

It's only similar to a fire sale if you think emailing someone is the same as deeply discounting a product.

A rational person can see that they are making an effort maximize in-store sales. Why would Apple possibly need a fire sale on iPhones when they just sold a (non-holiday quarter) record number of them in the most recent quarter?

While you're not familiar with the definition of a fire sale, you seem to embody this quite well. Another name for the ignore list.
