Looking forward to the new FCP :D

If you are trying to learn FCP, check out Larry Jordan tutorials. I learned a lot.

Not before Lion

I doubt Apple will ship a new version of FCP before they ship lion, there are simply no real video editor APIs in Snow Leopard that are capable of 64 bit, QT Kit is a joke.

HOWEVER, according to the developer page for Lion there will be a brand new A/V API in Lion that will be 64 bit and FCP will most likely be written in that.

I guess they could back port the entire API to Snow Leopard, but I wouldn't count on it.

Everything else you said is all well and good, but why on earth would anyone need to download a 4K movie?

4K is coming sooner than later. Youtube has 4K media, of course it looks bad because of the YT compression penalty.

4K displays are coming too, both computer monitors and home theater.

are there any 4K tv's out ?

Red Scarlet + 4K tv (how sweet it would be. oh well, I can dream on i guess)

I don't see it becoming commonplace anytime soon. 4K acquisition is still reserved for big budget Hollywood productions. Of course Red can do it but that still isn't exactly cheap and most either don't shoot it, or don't finish in 4K.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but it's going to be a while, especially on the consumer front. Unless they decide to force it down our throats like the 3D crap.

Blu-ray needed....

Compressor and DVDSP need help. I use both of them daily and my customer love that I shoot HD, now they want it delivered that way.

Tell a bride that just dropped $5k on her wedding video that she'll be getting it via digital download.

There is little to no technical reason the new framework couldn't run on Snow Leopard as a private API embedded with the final cut release. If the framework you mean is AV Foundation then they don't need to backport it all. It's Not a "New" API it's been running on the iOS branch of OSX for a few years now. So Snow Leopard shouldn't be much of an issue, it's just a matter of tying it in to GCD and the other low level fun stuff SL brought online. It doesn't sound like there is anything in Lion that will mean it will work different at those low levels to stop it working.

Remember Apple owns both the OS and FCP. The low level video boffins at Apple seem to have been working all along to get the framework read for this release. The suggestion that in a company as small as Apple that a team developed the AV foundation without the FCP people knowing about it till the last minute is kind of ridiculous.

I think it won't be released yet, but they've got it to a strong showable point. Underlying architecture probably relies on a few features tied to Lion (QT stuff and more?). Maybe we'd need to upgrade to Lion for it. Ready to go in June or whenever Lion actually hits.

Heh. looks like foidulus had a similar idea. I missed that post. And MattInOz comes in with a reasonable rebuttal and more technical knowledge than I have.

I don't think either foidulus or I were saying they were completely siloed--I'm sure they had some level of access to the A/V code. The question is is it in SL. Possibly.

sorry but that's not the case. While some contend it's jaw-dropping, that's only because they're stacking it up against what FCS is currently. Compared to what Avid and Adobe are doing, Apple now has a mountain to climb. Apple has been too interested in their entertainment business to worry about their "pro" line (hardware/software). I know quite a few studios who have already shifted BACK to Avid and some are taking on the Adobe Suite completely as their software of choice. While some may find the new FCS exciting, and it does have some bells and whistles, it's typical Apple doing an incremental bump to keep up with what others are doing. Sad really.

So if you were one of the 100 people up to now who's seen it and can accurately make this evaluation, let's see your invite....

Rumor is that new FCP will be based on A/V Foundation, leaving the legacy QT Kit limitations behind, and negating the need to wait for Lion for 64bit.

About time. FCP is aging poorly. The engine is still Carbon and based around the old QT, which means that a lot of functions only use two cores at the most. I think we'll finally see Apple seriously leveraging GCD, OpenCL, etc here, although don't expect video compression to use OpenCL if the lousy quality of CUDA encodes is any indicator. Maybe Apple will add support for QuickSync on Sandy Bridge.

Also, Compressor is a damned joke. When your "Pro" software encoder gives you less options and lower quality with longer render times than free alternatives, you really need to go back to the drawing board. Yes, a lot of folks use hardware encoders, but really, if you're going to include a software encoder, at least make it as good as free software...

Is for example Handbrake better than compressor? i.e. higher quality h.264 files and/or smaller file sizes and/or faster encodes?

Problem is, its still Final Cut and will still suck at managing media.

Guess you want us to believe you are one of the folks blessed with an advance look

I'm not trolling, this is an honest question. But isn't a Final Cut pretty much worthless for commercial use without a way to put the results on Blu-Ray?

It's called 3rd party software and an external burner. Us big boys do it that way all the time.

Nobody's using Blu-Ray, in my experience. It's just another way of sucking money out of home consumers. Everything's done online in terms of delivery...
'

Wake up and smell the coffee... BR is the main distribution method for paid HD content in the world. Also the quality is far better then with any download service.

Please explain

A) Whats wrong with 3rd party blu-ray burning?

B) How in the hell are you getting paid 5k if you need Final Cut or anything associated to burn blu-ray

Which 'new FCS' are you speaking about? Are you referring to the version that will allegedly be released at NAB? If so, how did you see it? You must be important!

Nobody's using Blu-Ray...

Seriously?!?! Have you been Zombitizied by Steve?

I have been highly critical of Apple of late - their "Pro?" stuff - harware and software - gets further and further behind the competition all the time.

And I always wait for them, because of these stupid rumors. Will this one finally be accurate?
