When my 2014 retina dies, I will buy another 2014 retina, or have it fixed. I don't see myself owning any newer models for the foreseeable future.

For anyone who made it this far, thanks for taking the time to read my rant. You all have a great day!

Well, Mac Pro user here, and I feel your pain. Next upgrade will probably be an iMac or MBP....

I truly hope they make it more repairable this time, too. Timely article on The Guardian on e-waste: https://www.theguardian.com/global-...ce-waste-old-technology-mountains-in-pictures

Don't be daft. Apple blatantly tell you how recyclable their machines are, and tout it, like they are so concerned about protecting the planet. What they actually want you to do, re-cycle your old machine by sending it back to them. They expect the machine that you paid for, to go back to them for free, so they can strip it down, salvage the materials and then resell it to you again, once they have reincarnated it. This has nothing to do with saving the planet - it's all about profit.

Yes, but the design of MacBook physically wouldn't support those ports. Now if that was the MacBook Pro.

Still, as far as dongles go, that one is pretty nice.
You're forgetting that Apple in all likelihood will be making the MBP even thinner so those other ports may not fit, or they may just decide to remove the ports anyways.

I would LOVE the bezel to disappear. that would make the 13 inch a 14 inch without being bigger and the 15 a 16 inch. I'd also love to see my hypothetical 14 inch computer have the ability to be upgraded to the same power as the hypothetical 16 inch. I know that won't happen, but I can dream. I don't need a massive screen. I need power!

Other than that just give me the most power you can at similar prices to what is selling now. I could care less about anything else. I am sure we will also see their new wireless audio tech built in.

Oh PenInput / Handwriting works very well on my 14" Thinkpad X1 yoga OLED.
The OLED Screen is worth every penny for my eyes
Fingerprint - login is so comfortable, I love it.
Lte -- your are right it depends on the strength of the signal, but it is more comfortable then a phone hotspot.

If I wanted, I could work with my old Mac IIci and a Modem, but I want to pay for the Best possible and until 2014 Apple Laptops were the Best possible. They did not develop forward, that s not funny.

Like I say to each his own but I need processing power and RAM - if in a 13" package I could use it more on a plane (15" is simply too big for most plane seats). Thats more functional to me. (Edit: a bezel-less 15" might work)

But to you points - how would handwriting / pen input work on a laptop ? That sounds dysfunctional rather than functional to me. Similarly touch screen. Anyone I know with a touch screen laptop spends all their time avoding touchign the screen so as to not smudge it. OLED - that's aesthetics not functionality. Finger-print sensor I actively don't want I prefer a password. 4G/LTE might be useful though I have no problem with hotspotting from my phone in the past - except when cell signal sucks and that would be a problem with onboard 4G/LTE also.

There's no headless workstation tower in the wizard's bag for me, so I no longer care, but I'm happy for everyone jonesing for a new MBP if this is true.

That's true. I can't help but wonder if they'll try to make the entire chassis smaller or if they'll just taper it like the MBA design. If they just taper, they'll still have room for certain ports (though I think they'll do away from them). If they retain the box design and just make it flatter then they'll have no chide but to abandon the old Thunderbolt 2 and USB-A port as they are already at the limit of the MBP's height.

EDIT: I don't believe the leaked images revealed any wedge design.

Question: This would be my second Macbook Pro, previous was a mid-2012 15" MBP. I don't care about the latest/greatest, does Apple usually drop the prices on their PREVIOUS model (say the 2015 models) once the newest model comes out? That is a typical business practice, however, Apple is not your typical business, thus the question...I've never really followed the new hardware releases so closely as I have with the rumored updated Macbook Pro line.

This will be like the Rapture for macs. What doesn't get updated will be discontinued.

So far it looks like the Mac Mini and Mac Pro will not get an update. MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac at least have rumors of an update. Maybe someday, the only Mac Apple will sell will be the MacBook Pro.

As there are no Kaby Lake 28w/45w CPU's available which are used in the Pro's, does this mean the new MacBook Pro's will be Skylake based? I will be avoiding them until the Q2 2017 refresh if that is the case. I'm not buying computers with a previous generation's architecture.

Skylake is current at that wattage. You won't see Kaby until next year at this time.

USB C is the replacement to all types of USB. Just like USB 3, other PC manufacturers aren't treating it that way. Apple is because it's the logical replacement. Also, the visible thickness is too thin for a USB A port. The actual thickness isn't, but some of that is hidden.

F the 2mm saved. 2 Legacy USB2 sized ports are much better than walking around with a pocket full of adapters - I use 50k worth of equipment that uses USB2 and adapters suck. Full stop

As for the price of the adapters - I have enough money to buy them - but I detest that feeling of being gouged by Apple. And the past few years I get that feeling more and more often...

Yep... I shelled out the money for the "trash can" Mac Pro myself, even upgrading it to 64GB of RAM via an eBay vendor who had it far cheaper than Apple did. I use it daily as my primary machine, but it quickly went from a pretty good value for what was included in the configuration I bought to a ridiculously overpriced cylinder that lacks any upgrade path.

One bad thing about it is that to have any kind of decent amount of drive storage, you have to use an external enclosure. I shelled out the $800 or so for a 5 drive cabinet that has Thunderbolt and handles RAID 5 internally. Now, I'm finding the enclosure is starting to show its age and get "glitchy" on me. One of the blue status LEDs on it has burnt out so you can't tell if drive 2 is actually powered on or not, visually. And if you bump the enclosure, the whole thing intermittently powers down and back on again.

Apple really should have sold their own, high-quality storage array to pair up with the nMP, knowing people using one might actually want a lot of disk storage attached to it. (There was a lot of speculation they could even build a square or rectangular "base" with a circular indent on top where the Mac Pro itself would sit, almost like a dock.)

I already own a Macbook Pro portable, but would never want to use that as my main computer. It's a great laptop and I'll eventually upgrade it to the latest model from Apple, I'm sure. But unless they do something with the Mac Pro workstation line, I think this machine is the END of that line. I'll eventually transition away from a Mac for it.

I am so over the thinness obsession these days.

In all honesty, I think that might be too optimistic, just because how slow they've been in rolling out newer chipsets.

The dongle makers must be rubbing their hands with glee. Takes me back to the tiny Sony laptop I had in 1998, with a port emulator hanging off one side and USB multi port dongle off the other. Just when the whole world has gone HDMI, Apple thinks it is a good idea to delete it. Hello Apple: NO IT ISN'T. If you have to go slim, what is wrong with a Mini-C HDMI port like professional cameras use?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't mini-C HDMI also require a dongle?

USB-C supplies native HDMI, so it's essentially the same thing. Look for those professional cameras to move to USB-C as well -- along with TVs and monitors. Eventually, you'll only need a USB-C cable for video.

Apple has done exactly the right hing with HDMI, essentially eliminating one more single purpose legacy port connector and folding it into a smaller more versatile one.

Same here, because I believe we are at a point of diminishing returns. Not just in the laptop arena, but also the iMacs and phones.

Why in the world did apple thing it having a razor thing iMac was a good idea. I love my 5k iMac, but if they didn't make it razor thin and had the ports on the side, life would have been better for me
